The Marty Squad - Are RTE Serious?

I listened to this today. Firstly I like Marty, he's a good presenter and has the knowledge, experience and the ability to present such a show very well. But he really must wonder what he has done to be lumbered with the absolute dregs of RTE's "talent".

What in God's name does Brenda Donoghue know about GAA? Without doubt, she's only on this show Because D'Arcy brought his own crowd with him (for the afternoon show) and RTE had nothing else to do with her. Paddy McKenna was more interested in double clicking his mouse, seemingly in a rush to shut down any open programs so that he could get out the door as quick as possible. He certainly wasnt listening to what the guests were saying. Then to add insult to injury they bring in that painful Avril Mulcahy for the last five minutes, a "dating expert", to tell us why GAA players are attractive to women.

Sport is something that RTE usually do very well, and I was happy to hear about the new show when it was first advertised. But I thought it would be a proper show, and not just a token show to provide continued employment for people who in any other station would have been let go.

Next week, Jason Byrne and Amanda Brunker give us their best double entendres with the word "balls"

The Second Captains presented a show in that slot last year, but they couldn't commit to it this year so they gave it to Marty instead.

When Marty is talking to the pundits about what happened over the weekend it's good, but I don't see the point of the other segments and switch it off when they are happening.

Discussed this on one of the GAA threads a few weeks back.

It's pure muck, and to be honest Second Captains was not a whole lot better.

Oddly enough people may just be interested in a proper analysis show in this slot, commenting on what has happened over the weekend.
The original show Take You Point fitted that description.

But no, RTE seems to think light entertainment is the way to go.

There was an interview with Brenda Donohue in TV Now a few weeks back and apparently her GAA expertise is that she supports Kildare! She also has ideas for radio and tv shows so beware! She is freelance and not an RTE employee so I don't see why RTE keep using her.

Take your point was perfect for this slot. Lunatics ringing in fuming over some incident. That was entertainment

Programme was awful this evening (Marty talking to a hen party a particularly low point). I like Marty, but in my opinion, this is not a good programme format.

    Yep it was cat.

And I was on my way back from Mayo v Sligo, getting further and further away form Mid West Radio range, and I had a hen party for post game "analysis"

It was my first time hearing the show & I was disappointed. Marty's panic at what stunt the hens might pull off next was audible.

This is back again for the championship season. I enjoy Marty and he's a great presenter who knows his stuff, but they need to just once and for all get rid of Brenda Donoghue. The is only an hour long, and the time assigned to her is just a waste of time...

Last week she was interviewing Aaron Kernan's mother (who was at the game), while Aaron himself was back in studio contributing to the panel there. Brenda referred to her as Aaron KIernan's mother, before going on to mention his brother... also named Kiernan apparently.. who was playing the game. I laughed at the time, but it's was just embarrassing for everyone.

But dont worry, she redeemed the whole segment by getting all the kids to shout "Woo hoo" as they went back to studio.

I would agree, Donohue has to go.

Marty Morrissey is anything but a good presenter. He is a total opportunist chancer who knows sweet f**k all about the sports of which he has been given a profile from.

    Totally disagree with that opinion.

    Totally.

Marty is a good commentator, plus he's positive / upbeat and has a good attitude. And you can feel the genuine passion he has for GAA sports.

But it seems the sports department has become the garbage bin for broadcasters who RTE no longer need but dont want to fire. John Murray being another example. The absolute disinterest he has for sport comes through in everything he introduces and everything he reads out.

He was doing VO for a show tonight on RTÉ1 called "Farmer In Charge", not really sure what the point of Marty doing it was as there was no element whatsoever of sport?

The Marty Squad is simply the worst program that RTE Radio puts out; not the worst sports program, the worst program.

Poor old Damien Lawlor; God love him being associated with that muck.

Can't understand why they don;t drop this rubbish and extend Sunday Sports til 7.

Whilst The Marty Party (that's what I've heard it referred to as) is atrocious, re. The above, you've obviously never heard Funny Friday on Liveline then....

To be fair to Marty, he fills in for Damian on Countrywide (Saturday mornings) and does a good job on this farming programme. I like his positivity but can't listen to him commentating on a full GAA match - I prefer Paraic Lodge.

Wouldn't agree there, Lodge is adequate commentator, in fact more than adequate, but needs to control his breathing better and in my opinion tends to be cliche ridden.

Wouldn't hold a candle to Marty, in my opinion.

Good God Man... There's no end of terrible sports commentary within 'RTE Sport'. Ger Canning and Marty Morrissey! The very epitome and definition of dysfunctional and truly diabolical.

It's only biannual sporting events such as the Euros that we see and unfortunately have to endure the aformentioned Stephen Alkin as well as more Canning and worse still, John Kenny!

They make Guy Mowbray at al at the Beeb very tolerable. It's harrowing to think this situation endlessly ceaselessly and mindlessly continues.

I was in Limerick listening to the match on RTE Radio and the commentator Pauric Lodge said that Marty would be getting a Garda escort out of Pearse Stadium in Galway and another Garda escort into Limerick so he could present The Marty Squad.

Now I have given up listening to the bloody Marty Squad as it is ****e but, I gotta ask

Is this an appropriate use of limited Garda resources?

Maybe the Garda powers that be are hoping the show will be renamed The Marty Squad Car.

    Think before you post James.

    1. Name of show-Marty Squad.

    2. Means of getting between Galway and Limerick-a car

    3. Again name of Show -The Marty Squad.

    4. Therefore car used to to transport said person- The Squad Car.

    Go back under your slate.:D

Coming out of estadio Frank Murphy after another Clare defeat today, my heart and spirits were raised as a diminutive faux tanned, sweaty, heaving marty came dashing down temple hill towards the park in a bid to ensure the nation of his enduring marty squad.

Upon return to the car and there it was. Radio dial hit and the bould Marty, his would be muse Anna Geary, Tomas Mulcahy and Tony Considine with added Cork through Seanie and Tomas O'Leary for his 'squad'.

Gerry Ryan's one time lick spittle Brenda Donohue proceeded to interview the great cork unwashed with a host of nothings adding precisely nothing to the production.

Tony Considine left little to the imagination with his attempt at ripping Clare apart which left marty squirming and left both the Mul and the noisy Anna incredulous. Tomas O'Leary then echoed the criticism of Clare and suggested Clare should be worried. Mul went quite. Anna made more noise. Marty added little.

Then Damien Lawlor brought some reasoned journalistic gravitas alongside the dependable Tom Dempsey in their analysis but this show like Rte's Gaa coverage in general could probably benefit from a little less marty. So yeah it's a chronic and abject abdication of responsibility from authorities to escort that charlatan for his 'squad' from Limerick to Cork where his penchant for smarm and complete lack of gaa knowledge are all too exposed.

I listened to The Marty Squad for the first time on Sunday and it would be so much better without Brenda O Donoghue. There she was talking to yer man from Crystal Swing who clearly hadn't a clue about hurling. It was awful stuff.

I cannot stand Anna Geary's self serving interruptions designed to show off how much research she has done. She isn't the presenter (yet) so she should only contribute not interrupt. She comes across as having a chip on her shoulder. I have heard Cora Staunton do analysis on football, including Mayo's defeat to Galway , and she was excellent. She was considered and spoke with authority. Two qualities Geary lacks. Get rid of her and Brenda please.

She's an overextended flavour of the month. Has an agent no less and a equal dollop of delusion about her so called knowledge and/or ability. Just like marty she's an incorrigible kiss arse. Her whining nasally knackery north cork accent is abhorrent. She's utterly bereft of even a pinch of humility or self-awareness. An absolute narcissist.

At 6:57 Marty cuts to a break with “there’s a lot more to hear from the Marty squad”. Break returns at 7:00 for a minute of a programme!

That’s par for the course on a lot of RTE radio show. Joe Duffy will frequently take 2 breaks in the last 5 minutes of the show, then come back for the last one to say “Aonghus McInally produced, Ray D’Arcy is next”, and go.
