what type of fish ?

well i was fishing off the wicklow coast (beach fishing) and i caught these fish but dont know what type of fish they where!

about 5-7 pound in weight silver in colour with a white belly but much darker on its back.

it had fairly big (spikes) on its top fin (dont know the name of the top fin) pectoral ? (spelling)

dont supose any of you know the names ?? or a picture i could see as i didnt take any myself

Sea bass for sure females have the darker back I think, open to correction on that one tho? What method did you use to catch these bass just interested what did you use ????????????

could be scad, quite like a mackerel but no relation, silver in colour also!!

Don't think they would quite reach 5-7 lb

what is the best set up to try catch bass out of interest ?? rig and bait etc and what weather is best suited for catching them passed a few spots today that were signed posted as a spot for bass

worms, and peelers are good for them, or spinning with the likes of an abu toby

How long is a piece of string?

Different Tactics suit Different Venues

Rigs i use Normally are a 1 hook running Leger rig with hook size varying between size 1 and 6/0

Some fish well at Low tide and some at high

Baits Differ as well But most of the Bass i landed Came to Peeler Crab

Weather Not too bright with a bit of warmth has given my best results But i have Caught Bass in the depths of winter

Best advice i Can give would be

Keep a diary
Make sure you have peeler crab
Try venues at both high and low water
Persevere and dont get disheartened if nothing seems to work
Bass Fishing is quite seceretive but still ask around (Take most with a pinch of salt)

sound out lads for the replies im pretty much a noob so i appreciate it

the spots i passed anyway the tide was just coming and there was fishermen at both so might try there. would any takle shop stock the crab ??

only got back on here today!

well it looks like this but as mentioned its much darker on the back!

also the top fin was much bigger than in this picture, had mostly a whiteish belly, silver, and dark on top!

i was fishing using, rag worm and feathers, caught one of them on the feathers and the other 2 on the rag worm

Some Tackle Shops will supply crab but it is bloody expensive

Best way is to grab a bucket and head down to pick them up yourself

Very easy to collect peelers at this time of the year

no deffo not, to round! its more like the other picture, maybe it is a bass! i dont know, ill go again and catch another and take some pictures

i'd be 99% sure it is seabass. any chance of a pm where you where fishing i'd love to try for them. did you keep them? be wary as there is a limit of 2 fish a day and you could be prosecuted.

Its close season now till June 15th

Best not to even fish for them until then

Sounds like a bass, there backs can be quite dark, darker than the picture

its no secret, i caught them in the ocean

wicklow, the road to brittis bay, i was on a private section of beach and just droped a line from the rocks, caught them on rag worm x 2 and 1 on a set of feathers! havent been back yet though as the weather isnt great!

I thought all beaches in Ireland were public i.e. they are all part of the public commons. Is the beach actually private or is that the access to it over private property and there is no other public way to get down to it?

well i used a pin number to gain access through gates, another pin number to gain access through the stop barrier

so id say it was private, the only people that where on the beach is the ones that live close and have access via the rear of their houses only which is about 3/5 houses

lovely and quiet though, very very clean imo

what type of fish ?
