I am thinking of pursuing a webmaster course and I have narrowed the search down to two institutes, namely Web intellect and IACT. Each webmaster course has two levels and the courses seem very comprehensive. Has anyone completed any of these courses and if so, how did they find them? Or maybe somebody could tell me their preference of institute and why?

    Thanks

You can view the IACT WebMaster course contents online at:

    http://www.iactonline.com/iact/courses/course_outlinedb.asp?idcourse=4

    and

    http://www.iactonline.com/iact/courses/course_outlineDB.asp?IDCourse=5

and you can view the Web Intellect courses by following the Level I and Level II links at http://www.webintellect.ie.

Both institutes seem to run very good courses and both are expensive. It's a tough choice although I seem to be gravitating towards the Web Intellect one. I'm coming from a programming background as I've obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Internet Systems Development and a BSc. in Information Systems Development from DIT. I've also designed one or two websites (e.g. www.softonomy.com) but I want to pursue a career in Web Development so I feel I would benefit from such a course. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

To be honest neither of those courses seem worth the money.

It looks like they teach people how to build websites and that's about it. There's not much call for people who build websites in companies. You have designers, and you have developers, and somtimes the intern to do the grunt HTML work.

Those course don't focus enough on design if you want to be a designer, and they don't focus enough on dev work to be a developer.

If you want to get into development, do a course in ASP, or Java servlets or PHP or something like that, and read up on HTML specifications and know that well too.

The Web Intellect Webmaster programs are delivered with a maximum of six people per class and modules are often flexible due to demands of a particular class.

I have looked at your website www.softonomy.com, and it would appear that you already have the skills(or the majority of skills), taught in Webmaster Level 1.

The Webmaster Level 2 course focuses on the Development aspects such as PHP, ASP, CGI, database linking including SQL, and on server technologies required by web developers such as IIS, Apache and SSI.

There is a discount available this week on the Web Intellect course, so it would be worth talking to them directly to check that the course content matches your requirements.

    Hope this helps.

Have to say I did a similar webmaster course, and while I don't reckon they are worth the money, its the only way to come up to speed relatively quickly. I found that I was too busy working to learn any new stuff or to keep up to date with all the different technologies. Doing a course forces you to get down and actually learn the stuff. I was thinking of doing the Level 2 course just because as I know I'll not get a chance timewise in work to pick up this stuff any other way, because ironcially I'm too busy doing websites!

Still its too expensive. I did the level 1 course only because I got a voucher that paid for half of it and my company paid for the rest of it.

    hey..

have done courses in IACT in the apst. They have very good instructors. I would, however, agree with the previous comments..it is very broad, and does not give you enough of a grounding i specific areas. You would be better off choosing the design side - or development side, and becoming good at one of these areas. If I was spending my own money( as opposed to the boss's), I would do a good Adobe Photoshop course, and a course in Dreamweaver MX. The other general information, you can get to grips with from a book.

    Good luck.

Start at http://www.w3schools.com - it's this forum's generally recommended starting point. Then search this forum for 'w3schools' to find more threads with further recommendations.

Kind of sad how this thread illustrates that no suitable course has been created in the past 8 years.

As I've always said... nobody's going to teach you to be a good designer or developer. You have to learn yourself.
