Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    hi, i am after getting a new job, its a bit of a distance from home, i was thinking of buying a campervan, maybe just like a transit or something but dont have a clue where to start, my budget would be around 5k, any advice would be greatly appreciated, fuel consumption, best for price what to look out for when viewing etc. sorry if this has been posted before or in the wrong section, i am relatively new to all this

    doesnt look in good condition at all, dont want to be spending money on repairing/upgrading anything if i could avoid it, thanks very much for the reply tho.

    Hi Youneverknow,
    To be honest , you'd be lucky to get anything for €5000 that doesnt need some repair or is going to need some repair in the near future and has everything clean and tidy. Its likely that either the mechanical or habitational side or both are going to need some attention sooner or later.
    Fuel consumption isnt a major issue on most campers because the differance between your regular car and a camper over a 100 km is very little.

    If it's just something to live in for the week I'd say you should get something for 5k no problem. Even an insulated van with a bed in the back would have you on your way. You'd draw less attention to yourself compared to a full blown camper also.

    start looking at the practical side, where will you park it, will you need a shower toilet... it will be a long coldwinter so will you have heating..
    have a lokk on the motor home facts forum http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ they have a section for full timers

    keep a eye on gumtree done deal and maybe wilson and merlin auctions.I've seen one decato panel van factory conversiom that friend got with a fixed bed table toilet shower... every thing a full timer would want. it's an 02 and cost 14k but at an aquction you never know

    Fuel economy and comfort are basically mutually exclusive.

    For fuel economy you could go with something like a poptop t4 with 1.9tdi engine (never going to find one for 5k though and you'd have no shower) you might get high 30s in mpg but it would be super cramped for everyday living and poptop is a balls in winter.

    Long wheel base panel van would have more room you might get a shower and might get low 30's mpg in a modern one or a very slow non turbo older one. Larger and older diesel campers would be in the 20-27mpg range and huge ones even sub 20mpg.

    Another thing to consider is: if you live in Dublin and the job is in Cork and you drive up and down once a week in a 27mpg camper (not exceeding 60-65 on the motorway) it would be about €40 more expensive than driving up and down in a 55mpg diesel car at current prices.

    You can rent a room in Cork for €50 a week so is it worth it.

    I seen this http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/campers/3233795 it looks good a bit of haggling and its in your budget of 5k, I own a 2.0 petrol Talbot Express like this one and I can say they have lots of room and the engines are pretty much bullet proof.
    Also if he's insisting on close to the price insist that he gets a D.O.E done to it first.

    That seams dear for an '88 van. Also the "sold as seen" line at the top would have me a bit weary.

    Its a bit dear but its not a home conversion and it has all mod cons, "sold as seen" is why I added get the owner to D.O.E it first if he's looking for close to the asking

    2.0 petrol would rob me to run it, my job is in clare i live in north cork, simona you have the right idea with that transit, trying to way up the pro's and cons of it all really
