Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

Noticed I had a slow puncture this evening and on closer inspection I noticed a nail head buried in the tyre. Brought it to a garage and asked them to repair it. What they did was, they removed the nail and stuffed the hole with some rubber strip (plug?).

My question is, first of all is this safe and second of all is it reliable as I thought they would remove the tyre and place a patch inside it. Asked the mechanic and he said it is perfectly safe, just looking for another opinion please.

    It is far from safe.

wihout removing the tyre from the rim it is impossible to ascertain whether the tyre was damaged while being driven on under inflated.

In order to insert the plug a bradal is used to widen the hole thus snapping a lot more of the reinforcing bands in the tyre than the nail or screw would have

say you have 7mm of tread remaing on the tyre, the plug is filling the hole right up to the tread. As the tyre wears the plugs become loose and can loss air or pop out in some cases.

always insist on a patch, always

now along come all the cowboys to tell me im wrong......

Ok thanks, however the plug is now in place. Is it possible to still get a patch to rectify it and ensure there will be no future problems.

You would be better off going somewhere else and get the plug removed and get the tyre checked over for damage and then patched. http://www.fixtires.com/proddetail.php?prod=WW6 these plug/patch combination are what's recommended to repair a tyre properly as the plug in these seals up the hole in the tyre to stop moisture and dirt getting in where the tyre was punctured but the string plug that was put in to your is only a temporary fix and you should get it looked at.
