Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Guys,
So ive decided to go and install a clack water softener for the whole house,it will be installed in my garage and due to the way the pipes run etc this will soften all the water to the house,id prefer this to an undersink softener from what ive researched the larger capacity softeners cost alot less to run less salt usage and less regen.only issue with this system is i dont have a filtered tap in the kitchen pre-softener so all the minerals have been mostly removed .im not worried about the salt residue like some people allude to as a properly working system has only trace elements and all the research etc from verified organisations (WHO) etc confirm this..less than what bottled water has even.its from a child point of view and lack of minerals is why im concerned so is there any system that i can put in under the sink to basically remineralise the water ?if so will this water then be hard again or just have the essential minerals.any advice or suggestions would be great.im living in the Dunshaughlin area, meath and the water is particularly hard over 450 ppm.its funny as the county council website shows Dunshaughlin as around 315 ppm but ive had it tested several times and all aver 450-500 by a calibrated verified test.thanks

When I fitted a water softener to my mother's house the instructions recommended that you plumb it in with a bypass, and a needle valve on the bypass. Then by varying the amount the bypass valve is open, you can vary the amount of un-softened water that is let through the system (where it combines with the softened water downstream to give a 'mixture' of softened and un-softened water.

Only way to re-harden water is to run it through a bed of Calcium Carbonate (which we do with our RO unit on our offshore installation where we generate potable water from sea water).

Carron Phoenix do a drinking water filter & tap kit called the Dante Filter Tap which will remove limescale from the water so if you run un-softened water to your kitchen sink this could be a solution. The only drawback is with limescale filter candles, they need cleaning and/or replacing frequently.

Excellent choice on the Clack water softener, have a think about the Aquaphor Morion with mineral enhancement option to keep pipework simple when plumbing from the garage. www.aquaphor.ie/product/morion-ireland-100/

Like Clack, Aquaphor is a world leading brand with 2,100 employees compared to Brita who claim to be the world's largest filter company with just 930 staff, but only selling filter jugs, and high cost to run (low filtering ability) fridge filters. Aquaphor provide the most advanced range of plumbed filter systems and sell to 43 countries with over 70 patents and to over 15 million families.

The daddy of all filter systems is the Aquaphor Morion Irish 100, which retails at €599 and the world's only "water on water" modified RO system with mineral option, low pressure operation from 30 psi without the need for RO systems with electric pumps which use €30 or so electric per year and twice the water consumption and twice the filters.

The Aquaphor Morion Irish 100 (Version 8) is built for the Irish market as the name suggests with all Irish fittings, and beefed up to include a 100 gpd membrane than the usual 50 gpd in cheaper brands, also with twin high grade silver carbon (bacteriostatic) K3 and K2 pre-filters 5 micron and 3 micron for chlorinated mains waters or some well waters with patented Aqualen ion exchange fibre for heavy metal removal and a wide range of undesirables that standard carbon filters cannot deal with.

The Aquaphor Morion Irish 100 model also has twin high grade membranes which no other domestic RO system in the world has. The main membrane has 100 gpd capacity twice that of standard RO systems, and the last filter is the K7B Mitsubishi UF (ultra-filtration) hollow fibre membrane and 0.8 micron silver carbon (bacteriostatic) composite filter. This filter allows 2 stage final filtration from 0.8 micron down to 0.02 micron UF nominal in the Mitsubishi element or (0.1 micron absolute). Most bacteria are 1 to 3 micron in size.

As the Aquaphor Morion Irish 100 model is made for the Irish market, it comes in a simple DIY kit form for half the price at just €299 in the box. However when it is installed at €599 (or €399 if you are having it installed with a Clack water softener), you get an extra filter kit bonus of 5 years worth of filter cover, meaning no running costs for 5 years, saving another €400 to €500 over basic conventional RO servicing requirements in the first 5 years, and under half the cost to run every 5 years after. Also when installed you get the additional 5 year onsite back up cover, no callout charges, free parts and labour.

Either way apart from Clack RO Microline systems, Aquaphor are the only 5 year manufacturer warranty RO on the market. Also in 5 years time as an Aquaphor owner you can upgrade to a new system with the latest Version of upgrades for close to the cost of a main filter change (all filters), if you need a full service, but if you have softened water pre-treatment it probably won't be necessary till 7 to 10 years and maybe beyond.
