Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A Meathman is among the 50 people shortlisted to work on a tropical island off the Queensland coast in what Australian tourism officials describe as 'the best job in the world'.

Thirty one year old George Karellas fought off almost 35,000 people from more than 200 countries to be shortlisted for the position, which involves being a “caretaker” of tropical Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

Mr Karellas has worked previously worked for RTE and Carr Communications.

No formal qualifications are needed for the job, but candidates must be willing to swim, snorkel, dive and sail, exploring some of the 900 islands and cays of the Great Barrier Reef, reporting back on the adventures to Tourism Queensland HQ in Brisbane (and the rest of the world) via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

Candidates had to submit a video application in English explaining why they should be chosen for the job.

The winner will receive return airfares, rent free accommodation in a luxury three-bedroom house and transport on Hamilton Island, as well as a salary of AUD $150,000 (€75,000) for the six months.

The winning applicant will be announced on May 6th, with the six-month contract commencing on July 1st.

How the hell can you live on an Island and not be able to swim?

And yeah, good on the man, hope he gets it.

Well just because there is a swimming pool down the road doesn't mean I can swim!

I'm pretty sure that there are other ways to get out of Ireland other than by swimming.

Try these websites for more info www.aerlingus.com or www.ryanair.com

Freezing cold Atlantic on one side and toxic waste riddled Irish Sea on the other.
Surprisingly a high amount of Irish people don't/can't swim well or at all.

The Irish guy seemed cool enough!!! I voted even though I know he won't win the Wild card, he might just get there in the Top 10.

Let's all vote for him. Then when he gets the job we'll begrudge the F*ck out of him in true Irish style.

Jesus that Russian one is annoying. He's going to have to get a lot of votes to supersede her.I am a bit Disappointed with his installment for Lady Elliot Island though.

The Julia one is very professional. Although she says some stupid things: 'I have huge experience in computing, I used to have a blog'. Eh, ok. Well done there

I started a thread yesterday pimping votes for this guy who I don't know but I thought it would nice to see an Irish guy win this job, the thread was deleted because "soliciting votes for competitions is not allowed"...

    *bump*

votes wise, this competition has really taken off for this now
    at time of posting
1: Clare (the dork) from Taiwan has 125185 votes
2: Julia (the bride) from Russia has 43943 votes
3: Mitchell (broadway fodder) from Canada has 34660 votes
4: George (the dude) our man from Meath has a respectable 23325

I've been voting daily with several email accounts, why?
because i've got the time to do it and as its been said, itd be one less man on the dole in ireland.

the chances of George overtaking that Clare dork (and im not being biased because shes beating George, its just that shes a dork) are pretty damn slim really but 3rd place isnt out of reach...

    George ftw!
