Kenmare Link Road Bypass

    The Kenmare Link Road Bypass will be a bypass from the N71 Bantry Road to the N70 Killarney road. Anyone with anymore info can post.

    Well seeing as Im living well away from the area taking photos with be quiet diffcult. So anyone who wants to add photos they can do. Plus anyone else with more info they can post it on this thread.

    Is Kenmare town being a little myopic - or are commercial interests the sole spokespersons for the town?


    The majority of the cars stopped in Kenmare Town; most would have spent money in
    the town. Building a bypass directly linking two of Ireland’s major tourist routes would
    be detrimental to Kenmare Town’s future.
    Key issues and recommendations:
    Messer’s Malachy Walsh & Partners stated “it is understood that indicative eastern
    relief road has been included in Kerry County Council’s (2004) Kenmare Local Area
    Plan which will join the N21 Killarney Road to the R569 Kilgarvan road. The
    implementation of the eastern relief road would provide Kerry County Council with the
    opportunity to revalue the introduction of long term traffic management measures in
    Kenmare town”.
    Unfortunately the eastern relief road has not been built. Kerry County Council have
    repeatedly told Kenmare Town that this relief road will have to be developer driven.
    With the current economic climate and the over development of Kenmare it is difficult
    to see any development in the foreseeable future. This would mean the badly needed
    eastern relief road for the town will not happen anytime soon. .
    If a western bypass were to be imposed on the town it would only encourage tourists to
    bypass the town.
    Tourism is Kenmare’s major business, in fact virtually its only business. Encouraging
    tourists to bypass the town would have serious effects on the ratepayers and the
    commercial life of the town. Currently Kenmare Town has more unoccupied business
    premises than ever before. A bypass would certainly add to this problem resulting in the
    closure of further commercial operations and resulting in serious job losses for Kenmare
    Town.
    Kenmare Town demands that all references to a western bypass is
    deleted from the new Kenmare Town plan.

    Traders in Arkla and Loughrea said the same for years, and after the bypasses were built, trade boomed in those towns, because people who wanted to be there could get there and spend money thee, and those stopped for five miles approaching them and hoping to never see them again weren't taking those town names in vain, like Kinnegad

    Both towns mentioned are commuter territory especially post motorway. Ring of Kerry towns youd imagine are in need of the passing trade more than places within half hour of major cities

    The ROK does not actually pass through Kenmare - it already bypasses :D

    Phase 2 is listed in this document from August 2017 as one of a list of projects to be developed under the Development Contributions Scheme. I assume it is just one of many awaiting funds.

    It will be interesting to see how they eventually link the two phases. The map shows them as entirely separate. I assume traffic from Railway Road will have to yield to the main flow of traffic through the two relief roads. It looks very awkward on the map.

    Nice to see a roundabout planned for the junction with the Sneem road. A mad health and safety risk currently.
