Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Removing paint from tiles

My brother just bought/moved into a house where the bathroom tiles (above the bath/shower) have been painted. Some of the paint is not flaking off. Tiles look fine.

We'd like to remove the paint. Options seem to be:
    • Scrape off - seems like the most work
    • Use domestic steamer - danger of damaging grout or else it won't be powerful enough
    • Use some kind of paint stripper - what kind and will it damage grout?

Just to say, removing tiles and replacing is not an option at this point.

I had to do it before. Crappy job.
Had to scrap every Tile. I'm sure someone in the know can advise something easier, but one day I just took into it and kept going.
Best of luck with it anyway.

Sounds like a crappy job alright.
Might even be easier to re-tile. Not sure whether youd get it perfect stripping the paint.

Assuming there's no budget to re-tile id say go ahead and use the steamer to loosen it - and not worry about the grout. I would imagine the grout will be harder to get the paint off of than the tiles. The grout might be in bad condition anyway with either method.

Regrouting isn't expensive and might give the job a bit of a lift.

Like I say, there's basically no budget, only time...

If the paint hadn't started flaking, we'd likely leave it as it is for now. But looks crap at the moment. Just removing the paint will make a big difference.

Another option would be to cut the paint along the line if a tile a the closest point of where it existing paint is loose/firm. Scrape the paint to the line you cut. Then reprint the tiles.
