World flu alert goes higher; Mexico plans shutdown

By MARK STEVENSON and ANDREW O. SELSKY – 38 minutes ago

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico readied a "temporarily closed" sign — taking the drastic step of ordering a suspension of nonessential federal government and private business activity as it tried to squelch a swine flu epidemic. The World Health Organization ratcheted up an alert and warned that "all of humanity" is threatened.

Anyone else feel this is totally over hyped?

Yes. Read somewhere that more than treble the amount of people have died of normal flu than swine flu in Mexico City in the last few weeks. Say's it all really.

I think it is obvious it has been over-hyped.

Do you think this may ahve anything to do with it?

Novavax
?symbol=NVAX.O&display=mountain&width=172&height=124&frequency=1day&duration=1year
Day's High $3.10

Day's Low $2.62

52-wk High $3.88

52-wk Low $0.52

Beta 2.71

Biocryst
?symbol=BCRX.O&display=mountain&width=172&height=124&frequency=1day&duration=1year

Day's High $4.05

Day's Low $3.26

52-wk High $4.89

52-wk Low $0.85

Beta 2.31

Avg. Vol 1,732,776

LOS ANGELES, April 24 (Reuters) - The swine flu outbreak is likely to benefit one of the most prolific and successful venture capital firms in the United States: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Thomson Reuters Private Equity Week reported on Friday.

Shares of the two public companies in the firm's portfolio of eight Pandemic and Bio Defense companies -- BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX.O) and Novavax (NVAX.O) -- jumped Friday on news that the swine flu killed a reported 60 people in Mexico and has infected people in the United States.
The World Health Organization said the virus appears to be susceptible to Roche's (ROG.VX) flu drug Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, but not to older flu drugs such as amantadine.

Shares of Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG closed up 3.48 percent after falling sharply earlier in the week on a cancer drug disappointment, while shares of U.S. biotechnology company Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD.O), which gets royalties from Roche on Tamiflu sales, slipped 10 cents to $45.80 on Friday.

But BioCryst, a maker of drugs that block key enzymes in viral diseases, jumped more than 26 percent on Friday to $2.21 per share. Viral vaccine maker Novavax rose more than 75 percent to $1.42 per share. - http://uk.reuters.com/article/governmentFilingsNews/idUKN2445216420090424?sp=true

So Rumsfeld is profiting from the outbreak but who are the partners for Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers?

Only Al Gore and Colin Powell!
Gore - http://www.kpcb.com/team/index.php?Al%20Gore
Powell - http://www.kpcb.com/team/index.php?Colin%20Powell

and strangely Bill Joy of Sun Microsystems http://www.kpcb.com/team/index.php?Bill%20Joy

Who once had this to say
"Our most powerful 21st-century technologies - robotics, genetic engineering, and nanotech - are threatening to make humans an endangered species."

I'd say it's more to do with the contagious nature of the virus and the fact the government want to be seen as pro-active in the eyes of the world.

I think it is obvious it has been over-hyped.

So in one post you are saying its overhyped, and in another

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055552217

you are claiming it may be a new type of biochemical weapon that could be used in population control and even hint that it could be used to wipe out arabs in the Middle East?

I'm going to make a wild and unfounded guess that people here would shout conspiracy if it was been reported less too...

I gave my thoughts on this in the other thread. Mods, okay for me to put a link to that post?

Try to be more critical. Are they reporting on a biochemical weapon? There you will find the difference.

So do you doubt it is over hyped?

And to say if it was reported less after 5 or so weeks and 8 deaths people would be cring conspiracy is a nonsense.

So do you doubt it is over hyped?

Well with regard to the quote from the World Health Organization the "All of humanity" bit is taken out of context to suggest they mean that humanity could be wiped out when it is really clear they mean that it could now strike any country, anywhere in the world now so we are all at risk of contracting it, as we have seen today this is indeed true. A breakdown of the Phases are seen here and as of now it is still at level five and reading the meaning of it it can hardly be claimed to be fear mongering.

http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/phase/en/index.html

Personally I think its been over hyped by the press but its understandable considering the nature of the story. If the unlikely happens and it does turn into a global pandemic I think there would be questions asked as to why more wasn't asked sooner.

Lets imagine a slightly different scenario: if we found out a rather big Asteroid was going to come awfully close to Earth and there was say a 0.5% chance of it hitting us somewhere it would be a huge story yes? Would you then hint and nudge (because thats what you seem to be doing) that the heavy reporting of it was a plan to draw attention from some other news? Or undoubtedly you could find a few people who were in line to make an awful amount of money from the whole thing from defence and survival systems so would you be able to claim that the whole thing was a bit suspicious?

Presuming you feel that it is still possible in this age of health for a virus to threaten the populace what set of circumstances would be required for you not to be suspicious?
And to say if it was reported less after 5 or so weeks and 8 deaths people would be cring conspiracy is a nonsense.

I strongly disagree with this, you only have to look at the other posts on this forum on the matter to see peoples imaginations running away it, like how it could all be part of the NWO's plan and so on. So imagine these peoples response if the media swept the whole thing under the carpet as well?
Are they reporting on a biochemical weapon?

Suprisingly not...

Seriously? I mean even if its not going to bring the world to its knees its still pretty serious. All your above comment shows is that either you are trying to play it down or you genuinely dont understand.

If I said this I would have bonkey and 6th, jumping all over me with their blackest black markers.

This place has the most slanted moderation I have ever come across is a forum. On the on hand, you are dishing out infractions to people for poking fun here and there and having a laugh. On the other, you have someone trying to discredit the severity of something which could become a global pandemic, where people could actually die, and what do the mods do?

You'd want to have a good think about it, lads.

Cheers for the ban.

Hang on a tick.

Is claiming that vaccines are part of a government plot to control/kill us without a scrap of solid evidence not scaremongering?
