Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Good to know I'm not the only one who refuses to buy Diageo's stuff.

I've never been too fond of them ever since my old college bar got in Erdinger, which kicked the arse of everything else they had on tap, but it was their pathetic BrewDog fiasco a few months back that turned it into a full boycott.

Well, I still have a bottle of Johhny Walker Red somewhere that someone bought me as a gift, because refusing that would have been downright rude, but none of my money has gone to Diageo for a long time indeed.

I'm a huge fan of Brewdog, especially the 5am saint amber ale. But yes that fiasco was just the kind of marketing Brewdog thrive on (i.e. controversy a la Mick O'Leary...), I'd say they were secretly delighted!

There's not too many publicans are fans of Diageo to be honest, at least outside of the chosen ones. I remember a few pubs in Cork tried to boycott them in 2008, it was a pity the beer revolution hadn't really taken off yet, they might have had some hope.

Absolutely amazed to see over 25,000 videos of Hitchens on YouTube.

He never visited the site himself, but was delighted of the collection on there. He was amazed by people coming up to him commenting on debates he had been in ten years previously.

    Here's a great video. Enjoy.

Brutal standup, but he takes questions/answers later which is great. Skip to 35 minutes.

There once was a plumber from Lee
Who was plumbing his girl by the sea
    She said Stop your plumbing,
    There's somebody coming!
Said the plumber still plumbing... It's me!

    An attempt of my own:

there was a young woman from Cork,
who hopped on the back of a stork,
she rode it around, all over the town,
And was found mighty pregnant in York

    From The Hitch:

there was a young man from nantucket,
who's thing was so long he could suck it,
who remarked with a grin as he wiped off his chin,
if my ear was a pussy i'd **** it.

There were some mods named Jernal and Rob,
Who helped play whack a mole with trolls like bob,
There was an awesome dedicated admin called Dades,
Who slayed all trolls with his blade,
And thus you had the trio of A & A mods.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,247 ✭✭✭pauldla

One by Tom Waits (quoted from memory, sue me if I'm wrong).

There was an old man called McEwan
Who couldn't be bothered with screwin'
He said, It's quicker and cleaner
    To finger your weiner
Besides, you can see what you're doin'.

There is this wee forum called Boards,
With mods who sometimes would get hordes,
    Of trolls and pretenders,
    With names like Cross_Gender*,
Who not long after bans get restored.

But some trolls will think they are smarter,
And not yield to the rules of the charter,
So with the wit of a Hitch,
And the power of a switch,
Dades kicks their ass out ever after.

So what is this limerick's morale?,
To round up all trolls in coral,
    And teach them a lesson,
    Double guessin is messin,
So when next they come back it will lessen.

    Boom boom.. :D

    * 'Cross_Gender' not a real troll name.

There once was a fellow named Keith,
Who unfortunately had two left feet,
He went into town, his trousers fell down,
And now he's not allowed on the street.

I'm here all week, but that shall be my last. :D

All of his articles written for The Guardian. http://www.theguardian.com/profile/christopherhitchens?page=4

I linked to page 4, which starts with his first one at the bottom of the page. Work backwards and enjoy.

    Never liked his anti-abortion stance

Or his ex-atheist journalist brother, Peter Hitchens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Qs

What he says about abortion there makes a lot of sense. I think most people believe in an "unborn child" in one way or another. The question is surely when we decide that level of development has taken place.

I'll add the caveat I don't know any more about Hitchens position on abortion.

I have been reading his work and watching his videos a lot lately.

It's sad that he is gone, but its great that we had him. A mind like Hitchens was and is crucial to free thinking.

Id imagine that most A+A regulars' would side with Hitchen's view that neoconservatism is a joke that went too far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,558 ✭✭✭Ardillaun

Hitch wrote extensively in support of the Iraq invasion which turned out to be a disaster. He never fully acknowledged his error there.

Not at all. He has been very vocal about his support for the Iraq war for example and his views on the Middle East would certainly make him a hawk. Take away his atheism, he is a classic conservative in many ways.

It's a pity that Hitchens isn't around to comment on the news that, next September, the Vatican will make Mother Teresa a saint:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/religion-and-beliefs/mother-teresa-of-calcutta-to-be-made-catholic-saint-1.2471023
The late Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Nobel laureate who dedicated her life to helping the poor, will be made a saint of the Catholic Church in September 2016, the Vatican said on Friday. It said Pope Francis had cleared the way for her sainthood by approving a decree recognising a miracle attributed to her intercession with God. It was believed to be the inexplicable healing of a man suffering from multiple brain tumours. Mother Teresa, who died in 1997 at the age of 87 and was known as the “saint of the gutters”, is expected to be canonised in early September. It was not clear if the ceremony would take place in Rome or India.

At times like these I truly miss this man.

His documentary on her was fantastic. And its great seeing his article on her being referenced again.

    Long live the Hitch.

That's the tough thing about Hitchens - most of his later stuff that posters here are likely to be familiar with certainly does read like opinion pieces, but at the same time, it's hard to pick holes in any of it.

He seems to have been that most rare of public personae, a demagogue with a fundamental respect for fact and logic.

The Guardian article wasn't afraid to elaborate on MT's less appealing attributes.

"But it is also controversial. Mother Teresa’s work has been questioned for decades by notable critics, who have alleged first that the Catholic missionary, who died in 1997, misused funds that were meant for charity, and second that she was a Catholic fundamentalist more concerned with evangelism than with serving the poor with adequate medical treatment. "
    ....
“Surely any respectable Catholic cringes with shame at the obviousness of the fakery,” Hitchens wrote in Slate that year. “A Bengali woman named Monica Besra claims that a beam of light emerged from a picture of Mother Teresa, which she happened to have in her home, and relieved her of a cancerous tumour. Her physician, Dr Ranjan Mustafi, says that she didn’t have a cancerous tumour in the first place and that the tubercular cyst she did have was cured by a course of prescription medicine.”

As much as I disagree with his apparently neo-con views I would love to know what he would've thought of the last 5 years and more so the last 5 months.
