Thanks for the info, it's great to see such events happening. Just wondering if it's an information event only or would there be screening etc taking place? Thanks again.

    Hi SteoL,

    Thanks for the support.

This is an information and support event. We expect the majority of people attending will be people who have had a bowel cancer diagnosis. The Irish Cancer Society doesn't carry out screening, we provide support, information and nursing and other services. See www.cancer.ie/news/upcomingDetails.php?ID=575?bie for full details of the talks and workshops at this event

We have been pressuring the Government for some time to introduce a national bowel cancer screening programme. This is now slated to begin in 2012.

It's important to remember that screening is about testing everyone in the country in a certain age-range even if they have no symptoms whereas if you have symptoms then you should see your GP right away who will arrange for further tests which may include a colonoscopy. See http://www.cancer.ie/bowelcancer for information about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.

If anyone has been waiting for a colonoscopy for more than 3 months as a public patient, they have the right to contact the National Treatment Purchase Fund who will pay for a private procedure. See www.ntpf.ie for more details or call 1890 720 820 or ask your GP or consultant.

Also, we hold similar events for other cancers during the year - please see www.cancer.ie/events for more

Thanks for that. I have ulcerative colitis myself so I have routine colonoscopy`s and blood tests every month. Its nice to see a screening programme.
