Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

TT bike reccomendations

    Hi folks,

    I'm looking to get a TT bike, and would appreciate some feedback from some of ye good folk in the know. I've searched this forum, but all the threads are relatively old. I want the bike for Time Trials, 16km in the main to 40km.

    At most I want to spend around 2.5k - 3. I don't need the bike in the immediate term, I would be happy to build it over the next few months in preparation for next year should it not be possible to purchase the complete build.

    Obviously the Canyon Speedmax CF would be fantastic, its a cracking looking bike, but its just to expensive. The Speedmax Al seems to be no longer available.

    One option is the Scott Plasma 10, reduced at the minute from Westbrook cycles. Could hopefully build it with an Ultegra groupset.

    Another is the Cervelo P2. A couple of lads in the club have one and are quite happy with it, though it doesn't seem particularly aggressive. Possibly that is just their particular set up.

    If you haven't already had one you might want to consider a bike fit as there tends to be quite a difference in different frames, some are much more long and low whereas others are higher and shorter and may not allow you as aggressive a position if that is what you're looking for. Fit really is the key to be comfortable on a TT bike and therefore able to stay in and produce power in the TT positon.

    The Speedmax AL is still there on the Canyon site in the triathlon bike section (AFAIK it's TT legal but you might want to confirm)

    another option, cannondale slice, fits the budget, i picked one up this time last year and love it.raced on it all season. new model out for next year as well

    Thanks lads. I had a bike fit done earlier this year on my road bike with Aidan Hammond. Very useful, is that data any use though in selecting a TT bike or is it a case of buying one and then getting fitted?

    I'll certainly look into the cannondale.

    I see the new Slice isn't UCI legal, it's being targeted towards the tri crew.

    Did Aidan give you stack and reach figures? Typically you would use these to compare TT bikes rather than top tube length. I think most manufacturers publish these now (I know giant don't, prob some others too).

    Was it a TT fit you had or a road bike one?

    It was a road bike fit, and after he fitted me for Aero bars. I have the data for it but not sure if it is of use.

    Yeah that bike fit won't give you stack and reach from what I remember getting my one done there - albeit two years ago.

    As smcclaw said, stack and reach is the most accurate measurement for getting the right frame size and then the rest of the fit will focus on position for TT etc.

    As for buying a bike and getting fit for it, I've seen some people come away from a bike fit after buying the bike only to be told they have the wrong size and the limitations of the bike itself won't allow for the best TT position.

    Retul have that muve bike that is adjustable so you can get your stack and reach, as well as your exact positioning and then use that data to find the best size. It's crazy how much each bike frame size differs, when it's stack and reach that matters.
    A few people on here have gone to bike fit studio for a bike fit and they have the muve bike as well so that could help before you drop the larger amount of money on the bike. Here's their site: http://www.bikefitstudio.ie/

    Anyone any thoughts on the Dolan Scala? Seems like a good spec for the money.

    did you get sorted JJ? Having a look around at the moment for one. its either alu @ ~1500 or carbon @ 2500+

    would the 2015 Speedmax Alu suffice? full 11 speed ultegra and mavic Cosmic SLS wheels @ 2200 canyon.com/en/triathlonbikes/bike.html?b=3687

    the Felt B16 2015 11speed looks good as well @ 1600 euro and its carbon but id : eurocycles.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=56159

    a Cervelo P2 would be ~2400 or a Boardman TT starting around 2500.

    im leaning towards the Felt at the minute as it gets good reviews. the Speedmax Alu would probably be my next choice due to the spec and wheels.

    Id hope to use it for TT's in some stage races and maybe do some local Time trial evenings.

    any other possibilities out there? what would others go for? budget for bike with basic wheels is 1500-ish

    I'm in the same position at the minute and debating between building something on a 2nd hand frame or going with Felt B16 or Dolan Scala.

    Does anyone know what the situation is with UCI approval and if its absolutely necessary? Does the frame have to have an approved sticker or is it a case of do the saddle and bars position just have to fit within the designated limits.

    Had a Dolan Aria built up for a few years and loved it - now for sale minus wheels ............ I see no one has mentioned The Neil Pryde Bayamo ......... UCI legal and a cracking bike if you can get it discounted - Cycle Superstore or try ebay - there seems to be a few demo bikes there .................
