RTE addressed the issue of the Angelus last year in an interview with the Examiner.

"In a religious state, the state broadcasting system would be promoting religion. In an atheist state, the state broadcasting system would be promoting atheism. In a secular state, it would do neither, and that is what Atheist Ireland wants to see happen," he said.

However, a spokesman for RTÉ pointed out that despite a "low level" campaign to discontinue the Angelus, its Religious Programmes department has not received a single complaint in recent times about the broadcast from other faiths. "

The view has been taken that the broadcast of the Angelus provides an important space for reflection in our schedules for a significant proportion of our audience. It appears that its broadcast is an issue only for a quite small number of people. In these circumstances and in the context of an overall religious programming policy which is accommodating diversity our plans are to continue broadcasting the Angelus," he said.

So they haven't received a single complaint from religious people. This does not say anything about the non-religious out there who make up the second largest group according to the 2006 census.

I still don't see why a National Broadcaster feels the need to provide an important space for reflection? That is surely something any individual can do on a private basis if necessary.
No other country has it in their TV and I don't see the justification for it.

Interesting to read RTE's view on this anyway.

Hardly abusive, if you report that kind of thing regularly I'd say most mods ignore your reports at this stage.

As for the OP, like it or not, it is a big deal. They (the EU) even lifted the travel ban on Mugabee so that he could attend!

I was jesting, bad joke i guess...apologies OP.

You know, I was a bit confused by Richard Dower's brand of "humour" at first as well. But as I've read more and gotten used to his jibes, I find them kind of interesting and amusing. Good show Richard. :)

Oops I think I just broke the sarcasm-o-meter.

The images have changed to non-religious but the message is the same and is inappropriate in a modern society.

When I switch on TV I want to be entertained by some programmes and informed by others. I don't want to be called to prayer or reminded to reflect!

Not only is RTE forcing us to pause for a clanging bell at 12 and 6, but tonight the 9 o'clock news headline's is that people are gathering in Rome for beatification of a dead pope.

Surely this is not worthy of being the top story and there are more important things happening in the world such as conflicts in Libya and Middle East, tornadoes in Alabama, Economy etc.

I really wish RTE would stop promoting religion.

It must certainly confirm our 'Holy Catholic' stereotype for any foreign visitors or people looking on internet.

Ok get this, RTE broadcasts what everyone wants to watch, not just you, everyone.
These were the Headlines of the BBC News last night
Royal Wedding: Of course thats still their most important news. But it was second in RTE cos its not really important to us now
Libya: Well yeah...like theyre involved in it, we're not. It was therefore third in RTEs lineup
Pope John Paul IIs beatification: Now this has nothing to do with Britain, theyre mainly Anglican, but they dont complain. It the 90% Catholic Irish people that complain
And of course its the beatification of a dead Pope, you dont beatify alive people

A more appropriate analogy would be replacing the angelus with a Fianna Fail Party Political Broadcast, would you still agree that they're not showing any bias in that case?

Wow, a question that has been completely ignored. How very surprising.

I still don't believe that the majority of Irish people were watching the beatification this morning.
And thank you for proving my point, BBC had it as third.
I still don't see why the build-up to an event (not the event itself) should be top headline, whilst major events are happening in Middle East, if we are involved or not.

Theyre a National Broadcaster, Its not about the majority, its about something for everyone.
Major events were'nt happening in the Middle East that concerned us that the hadn't reported on earlier(I believe the airstrike on Gaddafi's son was not known at 9:00pm last night). BBC reported it second because theyre involved and they have people making decisions in Britain. How would you have liked it if the headlines was "British Foreign Seretary, William Hague talks about the cost of the air strikes to the British people"???

It's an unfair world when a tv station gives up 1 minute twice a day, to put out a braodcast that does not appeal to you.

How dare 2 minutes in a 1440 minute day not cater to what you want. How dare they provide a service that another sector in society wants. To think that you have to wait a full 60 seconds before the tv show you want comes on, in fact you may even take the remote and change the channel to something else. That will teach them,

Who do they think they are, don't they know who you are

    Some nerve by RTE ...............

"90 heads of state and dignitaries attended the ceremony, including the presidents of Mexico and Poland. Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain were both in attendance.

Before one million people, Pope Benedict XVI beatified his predecessor, taking the final step before Pope John Paul II is granted full sainthood within the Catholic Church."

Yes indeed the rest of the world is showing no interest in it, just laughing at the Irish people. Thats 1 million Irish and 90 Irish heads of states that attended right? Noone else is interested?

The national broadcaster should not be promoting one religion over another.

If we were to follow your logic, I'm sure there would be a considerable amount of men that would love porn to be shown at peak hours? Should RTE do that then?

One minute for a call to prayer of catholics every day at probably the most primetime slot of the day which could bring in upto 20,000 euro per day. Thats good value for the catholic church saving 20,000+ euro per day - I mean its not like they own palaces or a bank to pay for such things. It is sickening that license payer's (and other tax payer's) money goes into directly funding a call to pray for one specific religion.
