Our laptop has just died and its ancient so I need to get a new one, as I just bought a new laptop for my sister (not thinking this would happen!:() so my budget is limited to about 400 euro. Our main uses for the laptop is internet usage and streaming programmes! any advise much appreciated.

The other has more hard drive space and there's a lot to be said when it comes to replacements at Argos (very good).

The Fujitsu would win in a performance test though.

Also, my current laptop (HP G6 1240sa) would blow both of them out of the water if you could find one, mine was €499 last Christmas so if you could find one, it should be around €400.

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking, but I'm looking for something in or around the €500 mark and have come up with these two... I think I’m going to settle for an i3 processor (rather than i5, which I'd been hoping for) and spend the difference on a 3-year warranty.

1) Lenovo B570 15.6" HD LED - i3 2330M 2.2GHz - 4GB RAM - 500GB HDD
£330 + £100 for the 3-year Squaretrade warranty = £430 = €530 approx + €3.50 to get it to a Parcel Motel in Dublin, where my sister will collect and hold onto it for me.

Same machine can be had here for £383.92 = €473 delivered straight to me in Limerick.

Dunno how ebuyer/Amazon can charge so much more (£100/£110 respectively) for pretty much exactly the same warranty (which covers Ireland, too, I checked). I could use the saving to add an extra 4GB of RAM for £40/€50…

Alternatively, this Toshiba with the (only slightly) faster 2nd generation processor…

I personally wouldn't spent a quarter of my budget on an extended warranty. Spend the £100 on a better laptop and see if there is one with a longer warranty included in it's price.

Not the same, comes with a Pentium B940 processor.

Here is the same laptop (with the Core i3 2330M) at LD Ireland for €443, 44 yoyos for the extended warranty.

It's through work, so they insist on it.

I gather Sony are the only manufacturer that offers their own 2-year option (other than Dell, but I ain't going there...!)

@Torquay: whoops, thanks for the spot. But for an extra €6 I'm thinking the Toshiba now, from LD Ireland, as per my edit above. Slightly better spec, much better battery. And a non-reflective screen.

Pity they don't do that Toshiba cashback thing they have on the UK site...

I'd rather spend 18 yoyos more and and grab a Core i5 instead. Never mind less memory or smaller hard drive, they're easily upgraded if need be, but with the processor you're stuck forever.

Point taken, but again it's for work, so I won't be putting my own money into upgrades and I'm unlikely to get it from the company — "Whaddya mean you need a bigger hard drive? We just bought you a new laptop in 2012...", etc.

Anyway, for the kind of use I envisage (photo editing is about the most performance-hungry thing I'd be doing regularly) I can't imagine that there'll be a huge difference between
Core i5 - 2.5 GHz - 4GB - 320GB
and
Core i3 - 2.3 GHz - 6GB - 750GB
And I would be inclined to rate Toshiba over Fujitsu in terms of build quality and reliability.

Anyway, I just ordered it (the Toshiba), so it must be the best deal on the market...!
