I think its the fact that WoW is being around so long that nearly everyone who would have an interest in it has already tried it at some point. A lot of people play on private servers too.

Yeah, not sure if we're allowed to mention those on here but those private servers are pretty cool and a real trip down memory lane!

I believe it's in the charter that we cannot, threads have been closed before because of it so I wouldn't to be safe.

Started in 2007 as my first ever MMO. I was absolutely useless at it (human warrior) and had a friend who was very enthusiastic for me to play pretty much work my character for me. After a few months of faffing about, I re-rolled a spellcaster (can't actually remember which one as I deleted the character) and thus the addiction sank in. I won't go into details, but when I say addiction, I actually mean addiction. I ended up having to take a year out of the game, and came back for WotLK. I made a nelf druid and had a much more enjoyable, reasonably-paced experience with no need to dehydrate myself to avoid the risk of bathroom breaks :p
I maxed level, specced dps and started raiding with my guild. I was one of the highest dps in the realm for my class at the time, and when I got bored of that, I dabbled in healing, which was my dream come true.
When Cata came out I picked it up at a midnight release with my then boyfriend, and I made my first mistake - I rolled a worgen instead of working to 85 on my main. I've never caught up since, was always two steps behind the guild, a smidgen too low in ilvl to raid with them and I slowly got lost and disinterested. Tried character after character after character and just couldn't fall in love with it again. I now have my level 90, and am holding out for the new expansion, where I might actually get to end-game content once again!

I've been playing since about 5/6 months pre-TBC. I leveled a Night Elf Hunter to 31 in that time. What a game it was back then. Stranglethorn Vale was the ****! I played on Bloodhoof EU back then. I had just started secondary school so I wasn't in to the whole raiding scene at that stage.

God I miss those days. No MMO to date has given me that same feeling when playing in a new world that Vanilla and TBC gave me.

Spot on. Played from launch until early WotLK, pretty hardcore - completed Ahn'Qiraj (weirdest place ever) and some of Naxx. TBC took things to a new level. I think the guild had had enough after TBC really. We all were a bit too old for it and it was pretty much just more of the same - new rep to grind, new items to farm etc.. We just moved on. Plenty of other games to play :)

Have not played in a while. Been around since the start but got board after Lich King. Thinking back the other day about playing WOW for the first time. No other game has ever created that experience and im not sure any will. There was just something about the game that sucked you in. Maybe it was the world creation but it just had something special.. Someone mentioned earlier about seeing the pirate ship in deadmines for the first time, that was epic... Every now and then Ill resub for a month to see if I can get back into it. But its just not the same..:(

yeah Deadmines was my first instance, I'll never forget it - didnt have a clue what i was doing so just mashed buttons and hoped for the best! Good times. Shame the game has become so diluted.

if you want a challenge, go try the Challenge Mode dungeons. Tried my first one the other night and we wiped about 7/8 times. It's great fun!

Challenge modes are insane but the gear looks great. There are so many short cuts to getting them done.

I recently purchased a boost as i wanted the gear before its removed in september, was run by an Irish guy and essentially showed that the runs can be done with a tank, 1dps and a healer.

If the tank is a monk, only need a healer. :D

I havent seen a monk do it but considering that if they are not played right and are a very active mitigating tank i would say they could struggle.

The DK i did it with was doing over 250K dps thanks to vengence.

monk can cap vengeance with ease, out-dpsing everything..

    Played for about 2-3 years.

While WoW is a great game, its indeed outdated now compared to what's out there.

but looking back, I really messed up some of my lift playing WoW.......

I played WoW solid for 4 years ( started a few weeks after release), but haven't even logged in once during the past in 6 years. I gave up a few weeks before Cata came out. I'd done as much as I wanted to do, including being a guild leader for 2 years. I still count it as one of the best games I've ever played. The sheer wonder of exploring the world during leveling for the very first time will probably never be beaten by any game. Some of the end game raid bosses experiences were incredible. Gaining access to Onxyia's lair for the first time and MC. Killing Vashj after weeks of wiping, the satisfaction of clearing Black Temple. It could also be savagely frustrating - people not knowing right from left when running around C'thun in AQ. Mu'ru was ****ing harsh too.

I'm time poor now, so could never devout the time required to play it again, certainly never raid. I imagine it's changed drastically since I gave up at the end of TBC. Getting to spend an hour now and again playing Battlefield 4 is about as much as i get these days on games.

6+ years (vanilla). Nothing infuriates me more than knowing it took me weeks/months of hardcore playing just to get one particular reward in those days - but now everything is as good as 2/3 quests and a casual grind away.

Yes, I'm an old 'anti-casual' fart :pac:

The industry has changed and most of us have grown and got responsibilities, I think they might have gone a bit far in wod though.

I've played since late 2006. Just before Burning Crusade.
Past few years I haven't been on it so much. Usually for the expansions and a few weeks after that. Then it fizzles out.
I still buy game time now and again for something to do. Mostly mount-farming these days.

I haven't raided in a long time. I miss the BC raids, they were great fun.

wow, just saw my post in this thread was two years ago
Currently playing a Boomkin which I raided with in WOTLK and Cata, but this expansion went mainly with my Warlock. Want to have a Priest again like the good old days, but might use it as my free 90 with the expansion

Boomkin has been totally left in the dust. Back on my Warlock at the moment and really won't switch again unless the class goes down the toilet. I swop mains way too much for my own good.

Since August 2009, I think it was right before or after patch 3.2.

I stopped playing in July this year and this is the longest I've gone without being subbed. I might get back into it again around Christmas.

Ive never raided or been in a top end guild, i dont want to either ;)

I love seeing paladins and warriors running around in mail because it has better stats.

They made me feel so much better about how I played my Rogue....

    Playing since vanilla.

Vanilla - First toon was a marksman hunter back when they had mana and could hold melee weapons and a ranged weapon at the same time.
Raided MC/BWL/ZG/AQ20/40 and never gave naxx a shot in vanilla at all. though i did solo Mister Bigglesworth!
Did the hunter bow&staff epic questline(ancient petrified leaf), which was truly epic. It's nice having that transmog too these days :)

TBC - switched main to Prot Warrior as Hunters BM was immensely buffed and marksman hunters just weren't in demand for raiding. Changed server from lightning's blade to bronzebeard and joined a semi-hardcore guild, manged to get a few server and faction firsts in SSC & TK, as well as one or two in BT. By the end of TBC with the changes and superbuffs to prot, managed to clear Sunwell.

Wrath - Stuck with prot, raided naxx finally.. no server firsts but thoroughly enjoyed that expansion. So much that i rolled a bunch of other classes and finally switched to resto druid for ICC25. That was a fantastic class to play in that expansion.

Cataclysm - Initially enjoyed playing cata as it was almost all back in the old world and ye could fly! The novelty soon wore off and i gave up, drifting back and forth whenever i was bored or broke enough to resub.

Pandaria Subbed for a month. Gave up. Subbed prior to WoD, gave up.

WoD Subbed for a month, really enjoyed it. Gave up. Subbed with tokens every so often to see what had been implemented, soon gave up as it was pretty much the same thing every time i logged in. And i've just recently upgraded to Legion out of boredom rather than fandom, and i fully expect Legion to be as dull as Pandaria and WoD after a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

That's so unusual, that someone with such a raid background, didn't raid/play in Panderia. Throne of Thunder and Siege of Orgrimmar were excellent raid encounters, and has it not been the end tier for as long as it was, I think SoO could've gone down as one of the best raids ever made.

I don't think Pandaria raids were the problem, the actual Pandaria expansion was the problem.

I played with breaks since late vanilla and Pandaria was my least played expansion. I did not even managed to level up to max level before I gave up. The theme of expansion was just horrible.

My favourite one will still be wotlk. It was not technically best and had its share of issues, but theme killed it for me. I have completed original wc3 amd wc3 tft single player so many times. Those two games were the reason I even started wow! Lore was amazing!
ironically my interest in wow fiddled away half way to cataclysm. I still bought all expansions, but did not played them after first month. I guess original lore that was up to cataclysm made it more then a game and raid grinder. I loved to world it self.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

I liked the Pandaria zone theme, and the factions. I wasn't big into the push on Pandas and the whole Zen nature of ying and yang, but every expansion has it's downsides.

At least there were no garrisons... :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Funny all the hate for Pandaria because allot of folk couldnt look past the black and white bears. It actually was a really decent expansion and was better recieved than WOD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,403 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

I really liked Pandaria, i thought the setting was beautiful and encouraged me to stay out in the wild more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,339 ✭✭✭PropJoe10

I much preferred Pandaria to Draenor. Thought the zones were beautiful and the questlines were mostly interesting and cool. The dungeon content was absolutely terrible in that one, but overall I thought it was a good expansion

Playing on and off since day one, didn't enjoy the last two expansions and unsubbed after 6 weeks or so from both, I'm hoping it will be different this time round with legion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Played since the end of Vanilla.

Wasnt into the Pandas, left, came back halfway through that expansion, gave it 3 months and left until coming back halfway through WoD.

Hoping Legion will be good and plan to enjoy it

I've played since WoTLK and lost so much of my life to it :D I've gotten every x pack since then although I only play for varying amounts per x pack usually around the 6 month mark. Wasn't too much of a fan of Cata, I liked panda although maybe the outside world more than the dungs, WoD I felt was just okay, I really didn't like the garrison. Honestly loving Legion so far although I haven't dipped into it too much. I've picked Stormheim as my first area and obviously getting some uber Grizzly Hills/Howling Fjords vibes from it which is really floating my boat. Props you should come back, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Ah yeah I'll probably pick it up nearer Christmas I'd say, cant afford it at the moment and dont really have the time for it. Good to hear the decent reviews though, I missed most of WoD - just couldnt get into the garrisons and they totally ruined the professions. Getting my WoW fix elsewhere at the moment and it's not costing me a penny so I'll stick with that for now :D

Played for about 2 years when WoTLK came out. Thinking of getting back into WoW now with all the good things being said about Legion!

Anybody have any recommendations for a server with a good crowd of Irish on it? None of the people I used to play with are still around!

    I've unsubbed

got bored with it, feels very grindy - some of the questing areas are especially designed so that it takes ages to get to the next quest hub - and ye cant fly so ye have to run/ride til ye find a flightpoint

I think after over a decade of it, i'm just burnt out with wow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,167 ✭✭✭Notorious

I've been playing on and off since WoLK was released. Put a lot of time into WoLK, loved Cata, but spent much less time playing both Mists and WoD. Pandaria looked beautiful, but the grind bored me. Draenor had a good storyline, but I felt there wasn't much to do at max level.

Legion is great so far. My biggest gripe with the game is that my server (Wildhammer) has become a low population server. When I last played it was full! It hasn't bothered me so far, but levelling is starting to feel very lonely.

I really think Blizzard could offer a realm change to those who resubscribe; I can't justify spending another €50 on a realm change after buying the xpac and paying my sub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Started March 2005. Leveled with a few buddies and once I got 60 I got into a pvp guild fairly easily.
Did Molten Core with that guild and killed Rag (was 4/5th guild on server to do so).

Things started to get serious with BWL, then AQ (server first C'thun on Outland woo) and Naxx. Naxx broke me though and I just couldn't give up the hours to raiding/collecting mats so I stopped in September 2006.

Came back in June 2007 and played a bit with a few players I kept in touch with. Joined another raiding guild and got Bruttalus down in Sunwell but the game just didn't feel the same and quit shortly after.

Came back again in 2010 and played for a month before cancelling the sub, didn't enjoy that at all and didn't have spare time to play either.

I'm back now and taking it more casually and really enjoying it.
