One for the cartographers. Leaving South Dublin and not going up and down the same climb (although out/back on deadend climbs is fine) what are some nice examples/routes of getting as much climb in as possible without long flat bits. ie. nice ways of tying in all the climbs we know and love.

I'm talking 100km, 3,500m of climb type things. I have done a bunch before and have climbed pretty much everything in Dublin/Wicklow on and off-road but I need to do a few hard rides before my final block of racing and am looking for inspiration. (Racing an MTB Marathon in Portugal in two weeks then the Croc Trophy).

This would be an example: https://www.strava.com/activities/394148884

It would be cool to have a "ring of fire" type challenge/loop of all the toughest Dublin/Wicklow climbs.

I had a slightly different route than this but I'd forgotten Seskin. There are a few "up and down" on it, Kilmashogue, Ticknock, and Kippure and a few km of overlap but mostly looping.

Ryan heres one I created from Firhouse, not even an up and back 100% different surface for the whole route.

Slight short of your climbing goal and a smidge longer but not out my much.

    3,400m in 118km

3500 ish in 115k, no up & backs but it takes in the Wall twice. Starts at the Old Mill in Firhouse

You could add in a Kippure up & down to make it 3800 in 122km and you could add in the looped road part of 3 rock as well.

I've noticed that recently Strava is miscalculating elevation when planning a route - usually as much as 20% extra.

Guys, can you please redraw these two above in ridewithgps (I have not access to it at work) and see what's the elevation? Frankly, 3500m in 112km does not seem possible to me in Wicklow, as single climbs have 200-400m of ascent here...

Barnslingan or Glencullen after Enniskerry would bump that flat stretch at 93km up a bit

Yeah - pops out at 2500 in ridewithgps.

It's hard to get over 3000 without the dead end routes to be honest. You have to do 3 rock, kilmashogue and Tibradden to have a hope. There's too much flat/rolling terrain between Dublin and the Sally Gap - even using Kippure adds a lot of distance to get out there and back. I can get it over 3000 alright but it takes about 130k.

Best way to get to 3,000 is to just ride the Mick Byrne route...I did it a few weeks back and had over 3,000 before I reached the Sally Gap (starting in Dalkey), so at around the 150km mark. Most routes I've tried to draw from the Dundrum area that are in or around 100km seem to get to 2-2500m of climbing max, unless you want to just do repeats of the same climb.

These 2 would be the most climbing I've done in under 100km. Love the climbs but its a pity so many are up and down climbs although I've starting using the off road part from kilmashouge to ticknock lately. Really makes a difference to me.

Whats the biggest climb that can be done in around Sallys Gap , Kippure Mast, Shay Elliot etc?

The biggest climb I have done according to Strava is 636m going from Bohernabreena to Kippure via Glenasmole.

Would this be measured as my biggest climb as it's a segment?

I recently did Schoarlstown Road to Kippure Mast which is over 600m in climbing in total according to Strava

Bray Seafront to Kippure is 736m climbing but I'm not sure if it's measured as one continuous climb - probably not
