    Hello,
    I am thinking the time has come to finally buy a new bike. For the past 4 years I've had a Lapiere Crusier (no bullnose handlebars, so torturous on the wrists when out for 5-6 hours!) I already cycle a good bit. I think I will go for a racer, and I have saved some money so I can afford to invest in a good one- would anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for, eg. brands, specs etc? Cheers

    The only problem with Canyon bikes is that the paintjobs are universally fugly.


    This Boardman Road Pro with full Ultegra groupset + Ultegra wheels is just a shade over your budget but it's very well specced for the money.

    The Planet X R57 with Ultegra is only 1500 from Planet-x Ireland, also fantastic spec, and with the money left over you could buy some proper blingy wheels.

    I was torn between a canyon and radon, the radon slightly pipped the canyon for spec http://www.radon-bikes.de/xist4c/web/home_id_9081_.htm

    Both brands seem good value.

    Don't rule out your LBS for a bike. It's a good budget. This time of year you might find some shops may still have some of last years models, and are very eager to shift them. I got my bike this week last year, got it for €1600, RRP the year prior was €2800. If didn't have extra funds at the time, but an extra few euro to funk up the wheels would have been nice.

    Go to a few local bike shops, tell them your budget and what type of cycling you do, leisure, racing, sportives etc See what one shop has to offer and then go to the next and see if they can better it.

    With €2k to spend in hard cash they'll be tripping themselves for your business so make sure you bargain hard for discounts and/or extras.

    With €2k in cash aim for a bike priced between €2300-2400 in your local shops.

    Appreciate the info guys, but spending about 2k on a bike what would be the 'musts' in terms of spec? Is carbon fiber all its cracked up to be?

    as per catfromhue, get a red one! theyre always the bestest.

    spec all depends on what you want to do with the bike, leisure or serious. with a 2k budget the advise of go to different LBS's is the way forward. Dont forget you dont have to buy the latest model, last years with all the bells & whistles will be just as good. Its also imprtant that you remember that the bike can be the madra's liathroidi but you have to have the engine!

    I love boards - OP suggests a budget of €2000 and everybody suggests more expensive bikes.

    OP there are several schools of thought about what to go for, but with that budget you'll be able to get decent everything. Some folks will advocate the best frame you can afford and upgrade components on it, however unless you race or intend to, it's probably unlikely that you'd spend another significant chunk of dosh in a year or two to upgrade. Basically your bike is 3 (or 4) components. Frame, groupset, wheels (and finishing kit, handlebars, saddle, seatpost etc..). Wheels are generally where bikes can fall down - my advice to you would be to price everything individually and then see which bike offers you the best savings versus a self build. My 2c would be that an 11sp groupset is a must at that level, and a decent set of wheels - but if you were to buy a bike with entry level wheels for €1500 you could spend the other €500 on a better set (or try to sell the entry wheels and spend €600).
