The Huawei Ascend Y201 is €60 on Tesco Mobile with €10 off coupon from Tesco in-store leaflet (page 10).
Link is for reference, coupon is only valid in-store: http://shop.tescomobile.ie/phones/displayPhone.aspx?p=150
Would this be better than the Alcatel OT-983 o2 uk are selling for £40 at the moment?
I'm looking for a super cheap, not-awful phone so I'm waiting to see if o2 will sell the Alcatel in Ireland. It's got a 1GHz processor, but only comes with Gingerbread. Decisions decisions...

Sorry I don't know a lot about smartphones, I'm sure someone will know though ....
Similar phone is €20 more on Three: http://www.three.ie/online/shop/productDetail.aspx?src=p&pid=1708&tariffType=prepay&p=voice

The Y200 is €79.00 on Three's website. That Tesco offer is a very good one. You won't get very many phones with 80mhz cpu at that price.

The big sister of this is the well-regarded Huawei Ascend G300, but its more the double this price at €150 (was €130): http://shop.vodafone.ie/shop/phones-and-plans/phones/pay-as-you-go/phone-details/huawei-ascend-g300

I think G300 can be flashed with new software and unlocked, not sure about the Y200 though. Anyone looking for cheap as chips smartphone for any network, should check out the Samsung Galaxy Mini on eMobile for €59. Can deffo be flashed and unlocked.

I was going to get the Galaxy mini but the reviews on the carphonewarehouse put me off about the battery, flashed? (how much would that might set you back?) as its €79.99 on tescomobile as i heard about the Sony Xperia might be better with better reviews? but i don't think its on the tesco network.

Tesco sells Sony Xperia tipo, so they have sony as well, and it has ICS. 99 euros

Avoid the galaxy mini the screen resolution is too small.
The keyboard takes up almost the entire screen and you can't see what you're typing.
If you don't have tiny fingers you'll have a hard time getting the keys at the side of the screen.

The resolution on the y200 and tipo are the same and just OK
The are very similar spec except the tipo has:
    • twice the ram
    • 5 times the internal storge 2.5gb vs 512mb
    • longer battery life
    • much newer version of android

Tipo linked to at €60 is a bargain if you're happy to use meteor - should also work on emobile I think as its the same network. But its expensive to unlock for other networks though - €30-€40 so you'd be stuck with meteor whereas the y200 is about €6

Internal storage doesn't matter much as you can add a memory card

The Y201 on the other hand is a very even match for the tipo and a baragin at the price Tesco are selling it for. Definitely the phone to go for if you want a decent cheap smart phone.
