Going to replace our front door and two side windows.
Im swaying towards a Palladio door. Ive contacted 3 distributors so far.

Anyone been down this road already and have advise on any other makes of composite door and recommend a distributor/installer?

Has anyone delt with a company called Weather Glaze (http://www.weather-glaze.com) Not the best of websites but have come back with a decent quote so far.

Hi we got a Palladio composite door approx 3 years ago, could not be happier with it . We got it from a chap in Wexford who did our windows years ago.He does a lot of work in the Dublin area and his prices are very competitive. Lovely man called Paddy .

My brother works for international glass If your in the dublin area and you want him to quote let me know. I would not suggest you contact him if i did not believe his work good. Having said that. I always go with the 3 quotes rule.

Just bear in mind the "cost" of an adverage composite door before fitting is about 2500-3000. You can easily add 1000 to that for fitting.

Profile Developments in Limerick made my Georgian 6 panel Composite door for me.
    0.23 U-Value.

I also had bespoke, hand laid stained glass installed in the porch aswell by a friend of mine who works with stained glass. The porch windows are tripple glazed.

Looks like a Palladio door is the best option then. Thanks for the info.

Been looking at the many distributors of palladio doors and came across these two sites.

    http://www.weatherglaze.ie

    http://www.weather-glaze.com

Nearly the same domain name but different contact numbers. Second site isnt that well put together. A search under there contact number returns lots of other domains aswell.

Im slightly wary of them. What do you think?

I had a composite door fitted by Fairco.ie only 2 months ago. I had checked with a number of companies. I eventually chose these guys and I have no complaints. It cost €3,200 in total. (Door included of course). It's early days yet but we have had no problems at all and it has vastly improved our "draft" situation. The workmen were efficient, professional and when they left they took the door and any rubbish with them. Apart from having a new door we wouldn't have known they had been there.

Ive been interested in improving the physical security of my home for a while and have recently invested in a high security front door.
Ive done a bit of research on this and can see that most composites are not made with a steel core but rather various forms of plastics, PVC, fibreglass etc which is then filled with foam insulation. Sometimes they have a police certification or a police approved safety standard, often they don't even have that. Maybe the physical security provided is enough on those doors but when I was sold my house I was told the doors were very secure and yet the guards tell me they know from the break ins in our area that our doors can easily be kicked in. I was looking for an independently assessed review of the security provided for my next door and I wanted it to fit into the look of the other doors in my estate.

I found out that a new safety standard has been accepted by Ireland and is known as the European Security Standard EN 1627 which was introduced in Ireland on May 23, 2011 and is known as Irish "Burglar Resistance" Security Standard IS EN 1627:2011.
Apparently in Eastern Europe most people live in apartment type dwellings and they take it for granted that their doors will be security doors. They dont wait for someone to actually get into their apartment and hope that the alarms and police will prevent any attack or theft. They plan on keeping intruders out in the first place.
The company I got to do my door http://www.securitycertifieddoors.ie/ gets their doors from Eastern Europe where they have been making and testing security doors for years. I was a bit nervous at first thinking the door was going to look like a bit of overkill but it actually looks like a normal front door.

The internal part of the door is made of steel sections filled with insulation material and it is encased in timber giving it the impression of being a wooden door.
The front of the door is brown to fit in with the look of the other doors in the estate but I wanted the inside to be white to fit in with my internal doors and the manufacturers were able to do that .
The door fits into a steel frame locking with bolts going into it top bottom and at the side. The glass is high security glass as well.
As a safety feature you can get out using thumbturns and you don't need a key to get out from the inside so it is not a firehazard.
From the sounds of other quotes here it seems a security door isnt much more than other security doors it cost me 3700 fitted but that was because I ordered the side panels with security glass, it would have been a lot cheaper if I had ordered a door on its own. If I was living in an apartment I would have a security door no question.
I think it crazy all doors and windows are not made to a specified security standard. At least now we have a European security standard maybe more manufacturers will start to make products to fit that standard. They will if we start insisting they do.

    Have a look for yourself.

Yea nice door. What is your back door like, and your windows?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Ambersky

fred funk the Alarm company are going to change the cable. Just got the door in two weeks ago havent had time to arrange time to change the cable but will do

martin123 I know a thing is only as strong as its weakest link and I also know burglars are usually opportunists and will move on to something easier if its around. In an effort to make it difficult for intruders I have of course extra locks on all windows, on the back door itself and a really neat lock on the patio door to prevent it being lifted out of its rails. patio-doors-6.jpg
http://burglarybusters.ie/ I got all my extra security features from this company. At first I just got an internal door done, anti bump and anti snap locks on all doors and security film on the side window and was so pleased with how much more secure I felt in my home that when it came time to renew my front door I decided to continue with the security theme.
I do have a good alarm system which could do with an update but figured if I had the choice of keeping intruders out in the first place or getting a phone call that someone had broken into my house I would choose to spend the money on keeping them out in the first place. So I spent a little extra on a really good security door. It is a composite door just a very strong one in a very strong metal frame.
On the side window I have an extra lock plus security film. Its expensive stuff so I only have it on that small window. If the cost of it comes down I would apply it to more windows.

Just found this An Garda Síochána Crime Prevention Information Sheet its got all the info you need right there.

The palladio is the best door available on the market in Ireland, without going in to the mega expensive security type doors, check this video out to see the quality if you haven't seen it yet.

Went with a palladio door in the end. Installation was finished in a half day and im very happy with the quality of work complete. We came from a warped wooden door so theres no compare.

Good for you they are a really nice door but wow the price of 2500 to 3000 for the door amazes me, the door from a supplier costs me 1600 to 1800 euro and that includes two side panels.
Now depending on what cut glass you go for it could cost a little more, then as you say they fitted it in a half a day, I would allow a half a day for two men to remove the old door and fit the new one including materials more like 500 so it should still cost more like 2500 installed tops

Security video is hilarious, if you actually used the rammer properly you would get through either door in a few goes. The weakest point will be the locks, you hit it there and you will smash the whole lock out of it.

Also I would be spending more money on the back door, you wouldn't be the sharpest robber to be kicking in a front door.

Think il stick with wood, might not be as secure but they look horrendous imo.

    Hey logistic

Do you mind me asking who you went for for your door in the end? I am based in Dublin too and got a quote from one of the companies that you also got a quote from. Trying to work out who is most reliable as prices seem to be reasonably standard-ish for composite doors. All info greatly appreciated as we're where you were a few months back trying to figure our way through all this stuff.

    Cheers

We went with weatherglaze in the end. I was a bit wary of there site so I went to visit two previous customers. Selected the closest customers to us from there website http://www.composite-doors-specialists.com/Gallery.html Our door is now also on the site. Based on there recommendations we went ahead. Everything went very smoothly and would definitely deal with them and would have no problems recommending them to others. Tony is the name of the man we delt with. Any other questions just shout!

Just finished the installation of our new door and so far so good. Job took slightly longer than we'd expected but there was a bit of additional work to be done. Very happy....and just in time for the serious drop in temperatures which has been forecasted #toastywarm

Sometimes when you want and opinion and the person you ask makes no comment then it might be worthwhile thinking that an open and honest answer might cause offense to the company! Make sure that you are provided with documentation to verify that you are being supplied with the advertised product. It would be wise to familiarise yourself with your legal entitlements if you are unfortunately supplied with a faulty product or service.

Just to add we had a small problem with the top of the door not sealing properly. We've had it 14 months now and I only noticed it with the high winds we've been having recently. I rang your man and true to form he was out to adjust the door. Took him 5 minutes to sort and we're all snug.
