    Hi,

I am currently in the market for a new car with a budget of 8-9k.
Would a Volkswagen Passat PASSAT 1.6 Petrol be a good choice?
My current mileage is about 10,000 km a year.
Would there be any benefit in purchasing a diesel with that kind of mileage?

    Thanks!

Stay away from the newer model 05 up to 08. They have a lot of problems.

Also the 1.6 is not the most economical or smooth engine. Do not bother buying a diesel at the mileage you are doing...

They are also boring to drive. Big, strong, safe, but hateful to drive. and it's a lot of metal to lug, so MPG will be grim.

If you can only do 1.6 in terms of insurance, get a focus. if you are a bit of a snob, get a golf.

no big car wil drive well with that motor.

    Ok thanks guys..

With regards the Focus,I have heard 1.4 can be a bit dead. Would 1.6 be economical to drive? I guess it would compared to the Passet 1.6 anyway?

i have a 06 1.6 petrol passat. it is a great car. never had any bother at all with it. only draw back is it can be thirsty on juice especially now petrol is gone so expensive. . i would rec it. if you could stretch to it i would go diesel.

It's lighter and smaller so it will be better on petrol. It's als ofun to drive and easier to park. I had a 06 passat diesel for 3 years. lots of room and comfort. but dull to drive. If that matters, then buy the ford.

The 1.4 TSi Passat is much better than the 1.6 FSi. 1.4 is turbo charged and has 122bhp compared to the 115bhp of the 1.6 litre. 1.4 TSi is also better on fuel.

    An example:

But if you are only doing 10k miles a year then fuel should not be a big concern. There is some great value out there on larger petrol engined cars as they are not in fashion at present while tax and insurance costs a little more.

Something like these can be bought within budget:

    OP, buy a diesel.

Petrol, in its current offering is a money hole.

Spending €2k or €3k extra for a similar diesel version while only doing 10k miles a year is also a money hole. And the last time I checked diesel costs more than petrol at the pump in some parts.

Couldn't agree more. Some terrible advise being given to the OP here.

Lets make a few assumptions about the OP and their driving style. Lets imagine here he/she is quite a frugal driver. Lets also assume the average unit cost of petrol is 1.48 and diesel is 1.45. From the above we can extrapolate the following:

    PETROL DIESEL
    MPG 35 MPG 55
MPG to KPL conversion * 0.354 MPG to KPL conversion * 0.354
    KPL 12.39 KPL 19.47
Mileage (KM) 10,000.00 Mileage (KM) 10,000.00
Litres Usage Per Annum 807.10 Litres Usage Per Annum 513.61
Average Unit Price € 1.48 Average Unit Price € 1.45
Fuel cost per annum €1,194.51 Fuel cost per annum €744.74

Fuel Cost difference Per Annum €449.78

Paying 3k extra for a diesel when the OP is doing only 10k per year makes no sense whatsoever not to mention the additional servicing costs associated with diesels.

I think its fair to say stick with petrol so.

    Few questions..

If you were to compare a Ford Focus 1.4/1.6 with a Golf 1.4/1.6 ?

What would you recommend? 1.6 seems to be harder to come by?Why is that?

    What about these?I guess I don't need a huge car really,something midrange..

Go for the Focus, only thing I don't like is the dash on the 2nd Focus...
My OH has a 09 Focus and its lovely, no big problems since we bought it this time last year...

    What about depreciation etc.

Is that an excel spreadsheet? Any chance of uploading it? Would be extremely helpful in threads where people ask about which car they should buy and people start spouting out "diesel!"
