Worried I might have an std

    I had a risky sexual encounter about 4 months ago and I got tested for stds a few weeks later, all came back clear.

    Two weeks ago I got some symptoms which I thought could be a kidney infection or an std; lower abdominal pain, frequent urination, nausea, loss of appetite, unusual discharge. Went to the doctor about it and he gave me 2 anitbiotics, one for kidney infection (although it had showed up clear on the dip test, but I had taken cystopurin which may have affected result) and one for bacterial vaginosis. He also advised me to go to an sti clinic as I told him my concerns.

    Was snowed in until xmas so couldn't do that, and still had the symptoms a week later after finishing the antibiotics. Went to another doctor about it (no sti clinics open near my home place during the hols) and she referred me to a&e for tests. Went there yesterday, got blood tests and swabs done. The results won't be back for at least a week and all they could tell me was that my white blood cell count was normal and there were no apparent signs of infection so it's just a case of waiting for the results. They don't know what's wrong with me.

    After much worrying and research on the net I'm concerned that I may have PID or chlamydia, which need to be treated right away with an antibiotic to prevent scarring and infertility. None of the doctors said i needed an antibiotic, so I'm really worried that if that's what it is, it'll be too late by the time i get the results.

    OP - you're probably causing yourself stress by researching on the internet. You have to let a doctor do the diagnosis - they're the people with the experience and training.

    You've done what you can do - now you've got to wait for the results. Hopefully, it will be something easily treatable.

    Try to relax for now - and leave the internet diagnoses alone for a while.

    OP, go back to the GP as soon as you can. If only to put your mind at rest. Explain your concerns. I wouldn't think scarring would build up in the space of a week but why not go along anyway. They probably wont charge you again seeing as it's so soon after the last appointment.

    Besides that, just wanted to say OP, I am a divil for Googling things and convincing myself I have every awful thing under the sun. Try to stay away from the Internet, you'll only scare yourself.

    Also afaik things like PID may take YEARS to develop so I think you might be over-anxious.

    I hope you get sorted and the test results will settle your mind. Please try not to panic and best of luck with your results.

    Op how long after your sexual encounter where you tested for STIs?

    HIV, hep B, syphilis needs to be 12 weeks for a conclusive teat result (syphilis is actually generally conclusive after 6 weeks).

    So you might need to test for these again if you tested before the end of the window period

    The other "less" dangerous STIs like chlamydia would test conclusive after 7 to 10 days.

    You wouldn't have PID from this encounter.

    STI testing is best done from an STI specialist rather than GP, so you might bare that in mind OP and go to a specialist for a check up and tests etc
