    Hello all,

After some consultation with the mods associated with the Programming, Web Design and Development and Tech Category, we decided to make a reshuffle in that area. There appeared to be a lot of cross-over and similar sorts of threads in each of these two forums, so we thought if we had one section for all development (software and web) and one for design (website layout and software GUI design) this might make things easier to follow and allow people to learn and share more with people involved in similar projects in slightly different ends of the industry.

On top of this, we have created a Mobile Applications development forum as it was felt that given the specialist nature and increasing popularity of this area, it could benefit with it's own forum and we can start to build a community of developers in this area.

So all this now falls under a new sub-category of the Tech Category called "Software and Web Development" and will start showing up in the drop-down menu later today or tomorrow.

So lets see how this pans out, we welcome your feedback on these changes.

    Dav

it's been a while since i've been involved in either forum so me opinion counts for naught. But seeing as application development is as different to web development as the two are to mobile development, why lump them in together? The overlap between web and app. dev. was one of the reasons I stopped reading both, so i'm not sure i'd agree with this.

Anyway, it's good to see an attempt being made, I might even try to get involved in them again on the back of this. Now, can we have the same for Comp & Tech please? :)

This seems like it's probably a good idea. The Programming forum was always the better place to post web development questions - php, asp, sql, etc. - and the overlap was a bit confusing at times.

Unfortunately there's still room for confusion -- some might consider HTML, JavaScript, etc. work to be suited to Development, personally I'd consider it design. It will also potentially orphan topics such as domain name questions, server questions, etc. There's a few of them at the moment in, what is now, the 'Design' forum. I guess more suited to Development, although not strictly speaking at home there either.

For a web developer POV - it's a change that was worth making. We'll just have to see does it work out as intended.

That's kinda our thinking on it too Goodshape.

In my past life I've been all of the above so to speak - software and web development and design at various stages of my career. Development skills I learned writting PHP and ASP always stood me when writting VB or C# - similarly for website design and GUI design, so rather than pigeon holing people into the "environments" they work in, we thought it might be best for people to hang out with thier own kind :)

We'll give it a go and see how it works out, if it doesn't work out, we can try again or go back to how things were.

There will still be cross over between the forums but we'll deal with it as it happens. Overall its part of a push to increase the value of the forums as an online resource for the Irish software and web development community.

I was told about this after the request went in and don't recall getting a response to my feedback I replied with. So, not everybody was consulted. :)

I keep clicking on development in my subbed list on m.boards thinking it is the old (site) development forum. :(

Just personal preference, but I really don't think the new subforum naming scheme is great.

    What I'm talking about is:
Software and Web Development -> Development
Software and Web Development -> Design

The first thing I find strange is that 'Design', as in systems architecture, class design, and so on, is part of software development. So where should a question on class design go? Is it not meant to be this type of design?

The next thing is that the description of 'Software and Web Development->Design' is:
"Discuss website and GUI development for software."

Shouldn't GUI development meant to go under the development subforum?

I find the new names confusing. I think the previous 'Programming' and 'Web-development and design' names were much clearer.

Is the 'Design' subforum intended to be about design of websites, GUIs etc? The things that a designer, with a background in graphic design, interaction design etc would generally do?

Where as the other forum is meant to capture both the technical sides of software development and web development?

Is it a good fit? I'd be a little concerned about the programming forum taking a hit here..?

Sully: I'm really sorry, I didn't see any feedback from you - but this wasn't related to one of your forums, so hadn't included you in the round of PMs I'd sent when I put this live. I was made aware of this here (mods only, sorry folks) and that's where the discussion took place (with me).

    fergalr:
Well we're give it a try like this, we can always change it back if everyone feels it's not working. A month, maybe two of a trial to see how it works out will probably be best and we can all review it then. At it's most basic though, I guess if you have a question, it's up to you to decide if it's design or development.

I was sent a PM after that thread was created, responded with some small comments, but never got a reply. I never pushed it was it never effected my forum much. I just wanted to point out that not all mods under Tech were contacted :)
