Streets of Wicklow 5k, Stephens day!!!!

    Hi, Entries are now available for the Streets of Wicklow 5k, to be held around Wicklow town on the 26th dec! This has been a very sucessful event for the past number of years, with very good cash prizes and T-shirts for the top 200 finishers.

    I enjoyed this last year. Went down theer expecting it to be flat for some reason. While it was hilly, it was the type of hilly course I like - flatat the start then a sharp rise up to halfway but then a massive descent before flattening out at the end again, before a small incline at the finish, in short uphill first half, very down hill second half.

    If you can pace yourself well on the first half and stay strong on the hill, you will fly home. I was about 2 secs off my PB last year, but probably because I went too hard on the uphill, struggled a bit on the way home.

    I see Burke oil are the sponsors. Question is are they covering any costs?

    It seems €15 entry will go quite a way in covering all cost incl. prizes T-shirts etc. 380 finished last year.

    That entry fee is a bit Irish now

    Never been at the roadrace but if its along the lines of the Greystones Track Meet then I think this is probably a great event and the organisers deserve great credit for putting together a race like this. Is it run by Wicklow County Board? If so, if there is a profit it will go to a worthy cause as in grassroots athletics. Well worth the money if that is the case I'd say and one why that recreational, master, and non-club runners can give something back to the sport at the younger age groups.

    The Race is being organised by Noreen O'Reilly, of Inbhear Dee AC (Wicklow Town). To be honest, I'm not sure what way the finances of this race work, But as anybody who is involided in organising races will tell you, Nobody will get rich from organising it!!!! Inbhear Dee AC has produced many talented athletes over the years, and if any profit is made from this race I'm sure it will be well spend at the grassroots level as Tingle suggested.

    Just looking briefly at the costs involided, €15 x 380 = €5700. Of this €2750 will be given back as prize money, and take in 200 tshirts at say €5 a pop, thats another €1000. This is just 2 items, You can see how costs stack up quickly!

    Thanks for that Timmay, my question would be so what if they do make a profit for themselves. If it's a good race and there willing to make the effort, then why not. Just a thought.

    Looking forward to it, it's a lovely route, especially that lung wrenching hill in the middle, and hopefully the weather will be as good as last year. As long as it's not lashing rain!

    IMO, €15 is a fair entry fee for a race if you compare it to the Bupa 10k (or whatever it's called now) in the Park.

    I'll happily pay €15 for a race if it goes into funding athletics locally.

    Talk is that Martin Fagan will be running!!!! Will be interesting to see if he can beat his 14.05 course record!!

    Timmay - you missed a great 8k run today in the Djouce handicap, a race that shows that running can be fun as much as anything else.

    Can't wait for this race my 5 year old can not wait for the fun run and her 3 year old sister wants a go aswell and my 8 year old brother ( who only said he would do it when the 3 year old confirmed her entry, as he now knows he won't finish last) the kids are really looking forward to the goody bag as they always raid mine after the adidas series but now they'll have the satisfaction of earning their own, is there medals aswell for them, I'll be doing the main event myself in my 3rd attempt this month to break 20 mins.

    Yeh weather is lookin good :)!!! I dont think it has rained any year of this race! My running has been going well, apart from runners knee which I have at the minute (wont slow me down over 5k) so I'm going for another PB this year!

    Anyone else run in Wicklow this morning? It was a fantastic morning for running.

    It's a nice course but I would have liked a clock at the end to see the proper times. I couldn't believe how fast Martin Fegan was, incredible.

    Hi, sorry one of them large timing clocks was one of the things we skimped on this year (€800 to hire it for the day!!!). Fagan ran a new course record, he shaved just a second off his record of 14.05!!! Deirdre Byrne smashed the old womens record of 16.21 by 20seconds I think.

    Weather was perfect, everything went smoothly enough I thought! As for myself, got a new PB of 17.19, but that involided an insane 1st km of 3.08. I dunno what I was thinking, but as a result I went backwards quickly on the hill!!

    Results will be up on www.athleticswicklow.com over the next few days.

    No apology needed I had a great morning. Thanks for the info all the same.

    It was run very well and the course is great. The second half is so fast after the climb and it sure was a fast start. Think I finished just ahead of you . Forgot to start my split timer , but from the regular time I think I was just over 17 minutes (1420).


    Looking forward to the times.

    Martin was incredible I tried to run with him until half way up the main hill but at that stage the two lead lads were gone. The group with Deirdre passed me at that stage as I had but too much effort into chasing Martin at the start.

    Really enjoyed it, knowing the course will make a difference next year., Would recommended it to anyone as a great 5K.

    always tempting to go off very fast in a 5k alright timmaay, especially when someone like martin fagan has gone off so incredibly fast (like a bullet to say the least!!). i must have passed u on the hill or somewhere cos i missed the first km mark but went through 2k in 6-50......good course and great day for running so was a great way to start st stephens day..........

    He picked up a nice 300quid (i think) for his 14mins effort on Friday, not bad at all. Must be the brillant course and atomsphere at the race :P:P:D.

    First time running this (have watched it a few times).
    The start is a little cramped, there was a bit of pulling and tugging but once underway all was fine.
    One suggestion I would make in reply to another poster - who missed the 1k mark, stick a few bodies around the course, either with a k marker or calling out the time.
    Overall very enjoyable - at least after the the 2k anyway :rolleyes:.
    Do they plan to keep the same course? Looks like there is an opportunity for an alternative when the town relief and port relief roads are complete.

    Yeh the webmaster is away at d min so the 5k results arn't up there yet. I don't know about the vets xc but will ask the people in the know and get back to ya!
