Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How much did it cost and what service did you have done? oil service, inspection 1/2 etc...

    Thanks a lot.

The majority of MINI owners (ie 95%) have a service package called TLC, it covers the servicing costs for the first 5 years for 250 Euro. If you don't have that, it will be an hourly basis, and each of the services varies from a standard oil service, to inspection 1's, etc.

Best bet is to contact a Dealer directly for prices, and if you're out of warranty, also check some independent Dealers.

I know about the TLC,i guess i should have said for people without TLC.I don't have a Mini, just trying to research some prices.

Maybe a little late for you... but I got a Inspection 2 and brake fluid change done last month in a BMW dealers in Galway (Tom Hogan) - €460 after a bit of haggling (ouch). The original bill was something like 370 for the inspection 2 + 100 for brake fluid chage + 40 to replace wiper blades (I could have done that myself!)

This morning my power steering suddenly went, so looks like I need a new pump too. That'll be another 4 or 5 hunderd no doubt. And to top it all off motor tax is due too - so Chrstmas is cancelled this year!

Anyone recommend a good independed garage in Galway that service BMW? Might try to save a bit on the pump replacement if I can. The dealers can really fleece you.

The PS Pump is a recognised weakness. Unfortunately, recently, the prices for the PS Pumps for MINIs went through the roof, but they can be found reconditioned - good as new - pretty easily through specialists. Try O'Learys MINI Specialists in Cork on 08686638828 to get a price on a pump, they'll fit it for you too if you need.

    Thanks Ned.
I've read a bit about this common problem with the PS pump on the Mini2 forum. Seems that Mini UK are footing a large portion of the bill in many cases because the issue is so common, even if the car is out of warrantly. (see post #475 here for example). Not sure if Mini Ireland will offer the same - but maybe it's worth trying my dealer. I've got about 65,000 miles on the clock though, so I won't get my hopes up. I'd suspect a reconditioned pump is the best way to go alright - don't think I'd manage getting it down to Cork though (steering is almost impossible). If I could find somewhere lcoally in Galway that would be the business.

OP, sorry for hijacking your post

Just an update on how I got on with my Mini Dealer (Tom Hogan Motors in Galway). The quote for the fix was 770 euro! But they submitted a techncial claim to Mini for me and it came back with a goodwill offer of 80% of the part costs. So I only had to pay 20% of the part costs + 100% labour costs. Which boils down to Mini covering 520 euro and me paying just 250 in total. So I'm pretty happy with that (even though if I pushed I could probably squeeze some more out of Mini!). They fixed it for me today, gave me a 08 Mini One as a courtesy car and I have my car back for the weekend. Great service overall!
Definitely worth contacting your dealer if this happens anyone else. It's a common problem that Mini recognise and offer goodwill contributions - even for older/higher miliage Minis.

Apologies all for resurrecting an old thread, but power-steering went in the 03 Mini One on Saturday, almost resulting in a crash

Anyway, spoke with Mini this morning, and as it doesn't have a BMW Service history (last 2 services) and we are not the original owners, the goodwill payment will more than likley not be available.

Anyway I am looking for a good independent specialist (or non-specialsit) who could source a re-conditioned pump and fit it for a reasonalbe price. Any suggestions welcome.

    Cheers,

    CP

    Drop paint doctor a PM.

You can get a re-conditioned pump for approx €300 or a new one for €500 or so. Fitting will take about an hour labour.

More than likely its carbon dust from the brushes covering the electronics (great design there lads), so if someone can strip down the motor clean it out, you should be good to go again for just the labour cost. But I don't know of anyone specifically stripping these down, have only done myself.

get onto miniclub.ie, there is a guy on there who will sort you out for a reasonable price. He's in Ballincollig in Cork tho, presume as you haven't mentioned anywhere else that you're in Dublin...

Did you get any warning signs from the steering? How long have you had the car?
Herself has a 02 but we reckon the pump was replaced by the previous owner..

The window motors seem to suffer the same fate, but window motors are hardly a life or death issue.

I've been in a car before when the power steering failed midway round a corner, (Toyota Carina) and it was fine - "normal" speed, dry road, driver strong enough and with quick enough reactions to realise what had happened etc...

You only need one of those things to be missing to get a real fright - don't fancy it giving up on Moll's Gap some night (great craic in a mini)

    Thanks - Will do.

Much as I like to try my hand at most things with the car, I'd say stripping down the pump is well beyond my skill level, and given the close call involved I won't be taking any chances (well maybe if it was my own car, but not with the missus)

Seems to be a really common problem with Minis of that era. I could be wrong, but I think I read that they eventually changed the Power Steering Pumps in the later minis.

I know of someone who's just bought a Mini very recently and there was a very high pitched whirring/whining from the power steering and the PS eventually died there last week.... about 3 weeks into owning the car.. :(

Luckily it didn't happen when it was being driven - not so lucky for some though! :(

It's a bit odd that this has been allowed go on for so long though with BMW. I would've expected a recall of some kind, considering this could lead to fatalities.

Seemingly the pump was very loud at traffic lights about 10 minutes before it happened. I then picked up the car later in the day and it was fine, but went half way around a 90 degree corner

At speed, it's fine and easy to manage, but nigh on impossible at low speeds

Were you in the habit of checking the powersteering fluid level? Bizarrely it isn't even mentioned in the manual - I wonder is low fluid level an issue in some cases? The graphite dust on the controller board does sound like it is an issue tho, especially in the spontaneous combustion cases...
