Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

More from the Iveagh Gardens yesterday.
    20080612_taste_0022.jpg
    from Wikipedia
Depth of focus vs depth of field

While the phrase depth of focus was historically used, and is sometimes still used, to mean depth of field, in modern times it is more often reserved for the image-side depth. Depth of field is a measurement of depth of acceptable sharpness in the object space, or subject space.

Depth of focus, however, is a measurement of how much distance exists behind the lens wherein the film plane will remain sharply in focus. It can be viewed as the flip side of depth of field, occurring on the opposite side of the lens.

Where depth of field often can be measured in macroscopic units such as meters and feet, depth of focus is typically measured in microscopic units such as fractions of a millimeter or thousandths of an inch.

The same factors that determine depth of field also determine depth of focus, but these factors can have different effects than they have in depth of field. Both depth of field and depth of focus increase with smaller apertures. For distant subjects (beyond macro range), depth of focus is relatively insensitive to focal length and subject distance, for a fixed f-number. In the macro region, depth of focus increases with longer focal length or closer subject distance, while depth of field decreases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

    Thanks Burnt, it was 30sec F3.5 ISO200.

I was really surprised how they turned out because I just pointed the camera out the window on a wonky tripod. Ah, the joys of insomnia :D

kensutz: Panning with the camera - foreground freezed by the flash and background is just panning :-)
According to the shadows it was on-camera flash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 781 ✭✭✭Mr. Grieves

Yeah I panned with the on-camera flash. It's all there in the exif data!

Only post processing was some levels and crop in Lightroom

Hopefully the last portrait for a while. Not sure I'm really getting them anyway.
Hoping to hit the coast this weekend to try my hand at landscapes and the like. Any suggestions in the Dublin area? Im considering Bray, Greystones, Skerries, etc.

the cliffwalk from bray to greystones is nice. not sure if it's still open though with all the work going on, on the marina in gstones and erosion and the usual stuff. otherwise climbing to bray head has lovely views.

This random picture comes with a question!
I sold my 70-200L f/4 lens during the week and need a picture of my Dogs for a frame my GF brought in, the thing is I'm finding it much harder to get as many "keeps" from the 50mm 1.4 than I did with the f/4!
what's confusing me is the f1/4 let's in more light then the f/4 so how comes I got more "freeze" motion pics with the f/4?
Just being out now and I only got this one out of about a dozen shots.

    Very original Dragan!

What are the 2 spots to the left of the bubble? One almost immediate next to it and one further to the left.

Animalrights the only thing I can think of is that the 1.4 will have a much smaller DOF then the f4 assuming you are using both wide open. That will deffinitely reduce your keeper rate.

Ok... The pics I am losing are slightly blurred or not 100% sharp, hardly camera shake as the 1.4 was a far lighter lense then the 70-200 which was the non IS version.

Thank you, and a good spot as well! They were just tiny spots of water on the lens....there was more than just that bubble around and one popped right beside my just as i took the shot. I thought it had ruined the pic....then lens was covered in water, fortunately it seems i got the click in that split second before the wave hit!
