Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Playing the Village on June 4th. I presume they're playing a set together instead of a set each. Too bad, I'd like to hear Fennesz do his usual thing (although a live collaboration with Patton is far from a problem for me :)). Tickets are on sale now.

I think Fennesz is great, mixture of laptop and guitar, sounds kind of like My Bloody Valentine but more chilled out. Do a google for his myspace page. I must add that I didn't know these guys were doing anything together, I'm interested to see how it sounds.

And Rivers, shame on you for linking to a porn site!

It might have boobs if ya go looking but it's also a semi-decent news site!

I listened to a bit of the Fennesz stuff yesterday and it didn't sound good to me, but I may head along anyway to see if a live show can change my mind.

What album did you try? Venice is fantastic, so's Endless Summer. The other albums I have are a little more difficult if glitch isn't your thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I didn't try any albums. I checked out a couple of choons on the myspace. It was really atmospheric stuff and I got bored. I'll consider checking one or other of them out, cheers :)

Ah right, I like the ones there so maybe my opinion of what's good is different to yours :)

Is this sold out? I've seen the topic on loads of boards and I just assumed it was a new collaboration in the pipeline and I figured it could wait... damn.

Wouldn't mind going to this, it seems like it'll at least be interesting if not great

Don't say that. Ive had to hold off till pay day to get the tickets......eek!:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I know its Patton but I doubt it's sold out (sorry, but I can't imagine Fennesz having a cult following in Ireland big enough to sell out the Village). It doesn't appear to be on Ticket bastard, but then again MCD aren't promoting it. What company is doing the tickets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

not sure yevveh, just the phone number on the village website, no link for online tickets as yet, so i reckon were ok.

On a side note, just listened to endless summer...pretty enjoyable, but also fairly frustrating as i kept expecting it to go somewhere...and it didnt.
I do however reckon fennesz's music could be a fantastic foil for pattons more mellow and playfull side...so i reckon it will be interesting.

I dunno, it's just I've seen this topic on loads of boards and every Patton fan I know is obsessed, so I thought it might be one of those sneaky sell outs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

    Cheers Mr Rivers...bookets Promptly Ticked!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I like how they put it "Mike Patton and Fennesz" on that site, not Fennesz and Patton ;)

I'll probably run into town after my exams and pick up a ticket. Even if it is a sneaky sell-out (I hate when that happens!) they often reserve a few tickets for sale at the door.

Bleh, too many supports! What time are Patton and Fennesz due on stage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭Zapp Brannigan

Mike Patton!! I agree with John's statement.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 gigpromotions

I disagree (sorry lads/girls), isn't that how you find great bands/dj's etc? When you hear their stuff? There has to be a first time. And who cares if they're crap, cuz you know Mike Patton will be on next! WoodenChin, you cheeky grasstards, wish I'd got my hands on Patton first! But thank you thank you thank you :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Of course that's how you find other good bands but four acts before the headliner is a bit much, especially if doors don't open until 8. People are paying to see Patton and Fennesz and if they have to leave to get buses or whatever then it's a bit of a rip off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭welcomeinjam

I cant wait for this. When will the show end?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Toast

    March.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

ZoiD are meant to be excellent, tis one of Daniel Jacobson's projects. Chequerboard, if its the same guy I'm thinking of, supported God is an Astronaut in Tripod in April and was pretty cool. One guy, acoustic guitar, lots of loops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

Thats a lot of support, anyone know what time Patton and fennesz are on at?
Its been my experience of gigs in dublin that they seem to finish fairly early....so does this mean were gonna get half an hour of the headliners?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

The Village usually has a curfew of 11pm so it looks like we're getting supports at the expense of Patton and Fennesz.

Hmm doors open at 8...first band on stage half past?

30 minute support slots..... 1 hour of the people we actually payed to see?
Thats a bit crap. Still might be interesting to see some new bands, but Patton and Fennesz will be a new experience for most of us, so im not overly impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

Headliners should do more than that, I'd expect slightly shorter slots (say 20mins for some groups) so the headliners can do 75-90mins. Hopefully.

Looking forward to seeing Patton, one week to go :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

That's presuming of course that Patton and Fennesz normally play over an hour. From the sounds of things I think their sets are all improvised so they might only play for an hour anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭welcomeinjam

I read on a poster for the show in town that doors open at 7:30 and the first group will be playing at 7:45.

    4 support acts.
Goddamn ****ing joke, I'm paying to see Fennesz and Patton not your mates.

I'd go in late but it's the Village so I'll just have show up early and to listen to all this wanky overcooked worthless garbage If I want a chance to actually see and hear the headliners I'll have to.
Already I'm pissed off. Actually considered selling my ticket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I think it's 3 support acts, from what I gather Chequerboard and Jimmy Behan are playing together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭Alucard II

i managed to miss most of the support. Mike and Christian took their time coming on, but it was worth the wait in the end. not too dissimilar from what i expected, which was the Fennesz white noise compositions, with Mikes vocal insanity mixed in.

there were occassions where i didnt think they clicked, but by the end of the night they were in full flow. highlights were the first piece they did, and the final two parts, ie. encore & last before the encore.
not one of the most amazing gigs ive been to, but worth the money

It was a good gig. Odd, but decent. However, not worth €25.
Lots of longhairs started leaving once they realised Mike wouldn't be rocking out :D

i'm not going to lie, it was quite odd. one of my friends said after that we heard some pitches we may never hear again, all in all it was a great gig, it would have been better if we hadnt been thrown out from the balcony for not having passes :D
i noticed piles of people leaving too when i went out for a fag, and in the toilet there was the hilarious "seriously, what the **** is going on out there???"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭welcomeinjam

I really enjoyed the show it was nothing incredible but it was entertaining. I could tell a couple of people around me clearly didn't like it though. The thing that really pissed me off about this gig was the people, the majority of them were complete idiots. There was a woman beside me wearing a firemans helmet and shouting stuff like "Mike I want your abortion"(haha aren't you so clever I havent heard that about a million times) and "Who the **** is that guy"(referring to Fennesz) which I thought was such a stupid thing to say. Then there was some guy up on the balcony shouting faith no more lyrics at one stage too in between one of the songs. There was also a guy wearing a t-shirt which he wrote Mike Patton is god. (I hate when people say that)

So overall the music was pretty good, some of the audience just pissed me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

It was funny watching the disgruntled girlfriends standing about scowling at the music.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 gigpromotions

..and I liked it! Odd? Yes! The audience were mostly dumb F*ckwits? Yes! Disgruntled? Nooooo....slight indigestion..so could have been my facial expressions..but it was an interesting gig, like it or not, it won't be forgotten.
My boyfriend is also a dumb F*ckwit, he just said women don't like Patton as much as men..I'll say no more, I might be accused of being on the rag. (love u honey)

My wife came along with me last night and absolutely loved it, a newfound respect for patton for her, and definetly a couple of fennesz fans here after it all.

The only gripe i have with the gig last night was the arsehole crowd, cant believe people actually booed at the end of it, i was raging.
The last part and the encore, as someone said earlier were outstanding, really blew me away.

Too many people were there to see Patton do his "faith no more" ****, (seriously listen to his music guys, its all a bit "odd") and that really pissed me off, a little bit of research would have let people know that it wasnt gonna be that kind of gig.

All in all, very enjoyalbe, and interesting gig, well worth 25 quid, just a shame the place was filled with so many twats.

On a side note, really enjoyed support slots one and two, the third one was a little feeble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I thought Patton and Fennesz were good but not great. I knew it would be mostly ambient/atmospheric and a lot of white noise, and although it might have been a little more enjoyable on first listen than Merzbow it still wasn't the most enjoyable. A guy I was talking to said it was like Sunn 0))) with Patton and electronics, which is pretty appropriate as I didn't like Sunn much on first listen either (never went back to them though).

As for the supports, I missed all of Chequerboard and Jimmy Behan, but I saw Chequerboard before and he's pretty decent. The 2nd guys (Lakker?) I didn't much like, and Zoid was rather good (though some of his stuff just didn't really work).

As a gig, wasn't a patch on Battles the other week :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Wow I didn't hear anyone booing? Although we made a quick exit.

Can't believe how many idiots would pay 25 euro to see a gig without even doing a Youtube search to see what sort of music it was! Gobsh*tes!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

i wouldnt say that it was full of idiots, just too many people with closed minds. now i enjoy pattons music as it's diferent (peeping tom Vs. Mr bungle). I went there with an open mind knowing that it was going to be extremely odd as mike patton is capable of odd stuff , but the people who didint look into it were left disapointed. though in fairness to everyone there, i was sitting on the kerb with the lads having a fag when i noticed fennesz and mike walking up the alley, i didnt see anyone hassle them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭welcomeinjam

There wasn't only booing someone also shouted "play something" how ****ing funny you absolute wanker. I was probably one of the youngest there, 16 to be precise but I think I can honestly say I had more brains than the majority of those pricks and don't even get me started on the people I saw with Mike Patton is God written on their t-shirts. Yeah I was outside aswell when he walked by too I wouldn't to ask for a photo soooo bad but I left it as I would've made an eejit out of myself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

i found it funny when somebody rather toungue in cheek shouted
    play "Easy"!
