Until I hear of people being disqualified I've always assumed it meant that pull could work for those positions or why else would it be banned !
Like most things its a warning not to get caught. :D

Seriously it's been on all the state jobs since the year dot.

Richardo, you wouldn't work for an insurance company would you? :)

moving on the post consensus is that it means on't talk about even applying for the job, lets say in the guards, that you don't tell anyone in case their uncles friends sons brother happens to work in the HR dept and tries to get you in.

    "Canvassing will disqualify"

Is a tacit acceptance by the Public Sector that rampant nepotism, toadying and the distribution of favours results in the appointment of halfwits to permanent pensionable positions that can't be economically sustained.

It also means "we can't be sued for it" because it says on the ad that it doesn't happen.

So in other words when you see this notice on a job ad and you don't have someone you can canvass for the position in question, don't even bother applying, as the Minister's cleaning lady's idiot son will be appointed as Systems Analyst in the Department of the Environment.

    Perverse, yet true.

So I take it you dont have any relatives working for the goverment then!? It should say 'canvassing will qualify' - at least that's the truth!

It means that you will be disqualified if you contact your local T.D. and ask him to put in a good word for you.
