Birds have never touched mine and I grow them every year on the patio.
I grow the Tumbler variety (short plants suited to pots or hanging baskets) and I get at least 2-3pounds of tomatoes off each plant.
The most important thing about growing tomatoes is to never let the compost dry out. In very hot weather this can mean watering twice a day sometimes.
