Hi, I recently went to Budapest for implants and bridge only to find they made a mess of the work and now refuse to reimburse me or advise of their insurers. The specialist in Ireland showed me the x rays of screws protruding form my bone and tells me it will cost 3 times as much to fix. That is if he can fix it wiithout destroying more bone!! Help. Any advice?

these things can happen from time to time. It's best to go back to the dentist that has done the treatment or write to their dental council.

Dont blame yourself too much, this type of thing happens a lot to a greater or lesser extent. Complex implant and crown and bridge is sometimes a specialist jobs. These guys in eastern europe dont tell you this, and will have a go at anything regardless of their experiance or qualifications, cause they know that your are geographically distant and will likely give up if there is a problem. Their slick advertising, low prices and fast treatment are enticing to patients (understandably) however the consiquences of poor quality rushed treatment, as you are finding out, are horrific.

I wish you all the best with getting some comeback and please keep us up to date on your progress.

    Regards

Thank you for the words of support. I believe I have two optiions open now. One take them to ordinary court, with subsequent bills and no guarentee as the company argue that they should be fixing it.

I just cannot take the risk of more bad work and there are nerves just below the implant that if damaged could cause permanent paralysis. They also still claiming the work is ok!! I also bellieve are not insured for this complex work. Too many risks involved in going back.

Or go for the small claims court and the guy here has been very helpful and recons I will win. I will at least get a third of my money back.

I am deciding over the weekend.

I had sold my house and am lucky I have the money freed up to pay for the new work. I would hate it to happen to someone who had borrowed for this!! Anyone thinking of going abroad please be careful.

In all fairness this is exactly why these guys can act with such impunity. You go over and it goes well - you tell everyone "I am the worlds greatest bargain hunter", go in TV3 and or the supplement in the sunday papers and tell the nation. But more commonly you go over get bad work, and just get it fixed hear and let them off the hook completely and try and forget the whole episode, keeping the embarassing tale to yourself.

If it was worth going and getting done over there in the first place, its worth chasing them down for compensation. You let him take your money and mess up your mouth, there must be some repercussions for them.

I pay thousands in liability insurance, and can be sure that if I do something I should not I will end up in court.

    Fitzgeme,

I do not like losing €4077 euro plus flights plus hotel (over €5000 ) but they say I take responsibility if I do not allow them to do any further work.
They do not have an implantologist, only a young dentist but bring some man in. They refuse to give me details of their indemnity. Up until I said things were wrong they were so very nice. I hated saying to them that it was not ok thinking they would be upset!!!

I was stupid and feel now I want to cut my losses and move on. I tried to contact a few solicitoors in Budapest but have not been successful. My first corrective surgery is next Monday morning in Belfast. I will let you know what he suggests and what I then decide. Thank you for your mail. I appreciate it.

May I ask what lead you to think the work was bad in the frist place for you to go see someone else...was there pain, or breakages??? Interesting thread

There were things which should have allerted me all along but unfortunately didnt. The woman who runs this practice is not a dentist but never left the surgery even though the dentist could speak English. She was really nice to me until I was unhappy. Many other things in hindsight should have made me uneasy. The owner and the dentist made decisions about my treatment. The implantologist turned up on the morning, injected me and inserted two implants. Until then because of all the decision making I thought that the dentist was the implantologist.

To cut what could be a long and boring story short after the surgery I was told not to eat anything for 4 hours. When I ate a meal before I left for the airport I found that large amounts of food trapped in the inside under the bridge. Only the inner side is open and I can actually feel the implant pins. I e mailed the owner and she said this was normal etc etc.

I was still unhappy and had the x rays taken by my friend's implantologist in Belfast. They had told me all along that the pain I was feeling on one side was expected and would settle down. I do not know the cause of it yet. Hopefully I will know on Monday.

The x rays clearly show problems about the angle and depth and even type of screw used by he implantologist. Pieces of cement are still falling off.
One alarming thing is that the owner told me that she was sending her dentist to Germany to train as an implantologist so they would be fully operational. The training? Two days!! She obviously thought nothing wrong with that or would not have told me. God help unsuspecting others.

I was accused by a member os scaremongering but if people go abroad I advised they ask companies who they are idemnified by as a safe guard.

Solas, when putting in your claim for reimbursment, assuming the Budapest dentist did poor work, you will want to look for your money back plus cost of the remedial treatment, plus time off work, pain and hardship etc. Make sure the guy in Belfast documents your current status before he dives in to change it. ( I'm sure he will anyway). Then you need to make a written complaint to the dental licensing body in Budapest. If they are anything like the rest of the civilised world they will take it up with the dentist on your behalf. I don't mean they will get your money back for you but they should ask him to give complete details of his handling of your case.

It could be that he did nothing wrong at all. Because things do go wrong sometimes even with good treatment. (I'm just being kind and pretending I'm not judgemental)

don't spend too much money on lawyers yet because the dental licensing body should help you for free.

    Thanks Georgyporgy,
I will contact them next week. All I ever looked for is my money €4077 (their fee)back as I accept some responsibility about not checking out more fully. I felt I was being fair as mistakes do occur. Their attitude is now not too pleasant.

That a fair bit of money, You could have gotten them done in Ireland for very close to that by a bonafida specialist. They take on a extra charge for everything in these clinics, each x-ray, each injection, eact stitch etc. It adds up. So neither cheap nor cheerful.

    Hi,
I realise that now. Before I went I had an estimate from another dentist and it was £8,000 but it was for all implants. I let what was happening go over my head..... Until now. To be honest I did not see beyond what I was saving.

The dentist I am now using is an implantologist. I will let you know what happens after Monday.

It would be really nice if your new dentist could supply a photo and xray of the work that could be uploaded here. this may involve the use of a teenager
(for the benefit of younger readers, this refers to a nostalgic time in the past when people like me had to ask our kids how to tape a tv show)

On my to-do list, it says

"Look into madenta.ie, dentistry / braces in Budapest"

    I just deleted that sh*t!

That is all. Please carry on.

    Hi Fitz
I had my first remedial work carried out today and am now in a fair bit of pain.

My left bridge took one full hour and a half to remove. in the process both implants came away. One had a little pus at the end so he recons I would have had serious trouble very soon. They had not taken to the bone at all and in the cement the dentist found an eyelash, yes an eyelash!

The bone needs to heal before he will touch my mouth again and as I head to India for three months in September this looks like its going to be a l o n g story.

He will support my complaint to the medical people in Budapest and has kept the pieces and the eyelash!!!.
Thanks all for your advice and support.
    Kind regards

    Hi,
and thanks to those who gave me advice. I have found an excellant solicitor who guarentees that he will ensure I am refunded +.

The survey out today will, thank goodness, make others more cautious about the type of people I met.

  • Registered Users Posts: 86 ✭✭Solas8

    Hi,
To all of you who are planning dental work abroad.

I am just back from my solicitor. He has advised me that my Irish dentist will need to travel to Budapest as an 'expert witness' in any court action against the clinic, who by the way has attempted to surreptitiously advertise on boards. and that I need to use a Hungarian solicitor. So even knowing who the insurers are is no guarantee of comeback.

I am fortunate that I have a dentist who is keen to support me.
Just thought I better tell you when you are making your inquiries.

My expensive advice is to shop around in Ireland, north and south and get tons of testimonies.:D
    Kind regards
    S

Wouldn't it be nice if the folks from TV3 went along with you to document your experience. It would give a nice balance to some of the promoting of dental tourism they have done in the past.
