Backfiring motorbike

Hadn't used the motorbike in a few days and when I tried starting it up yesterday, it wouldn't turn on: no lights, no noise, nothing.
I charged the battery overnight and it started up again only to backfire.

Any idea what the problem might be? Want to see if it's something easy to fix before I bring it to the mechanic.

The three main issues that result in a backfire on a motorcycle engine & exhaust system are...

    1/ Lean conditions
    2/ Intake leaks
    3/ Exhaust leaks

A backfire is an explosion that occurs either in the intake or in the exhaust of your motorcycle, an emission system malfunction so to speak.

This explosion should occur in the combustion chamber & when it doesn't, there is an interruption in your engine's operation.

You might see a short-lived flame coming from your exhaust.

Coils or leads? Old Hornet of mine did that. WD40 around the electrics or look for any cracked wires.

If it will start in the afternoon but not in the morning (on a dry/warmish day), that could be your problem.

My coils had cracked over the summer but didn't notice it until this time of year (more moisture in the mornings and it got into the coils)

....that's more a mis-fire rather than a backfire, but worth checking anyway.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
