Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

...dwg file crashing my machine.......

Long story short, I use Draft Sight for the (amount) of cad I have to do (not that much.) Our full time AT's etc use Solid Works and we do have Autodesk Acad on some machines (which we've gone away from).

So, to my problem. I got a .dwg file from a client, and as soon as I attempt to open it, it crashes my machine. My bad I think. So I get our acad guys to open it in Autodesk and it's fine, but it crashes their DS too. So, they clean/purge the drawing in Acad, and export it and.........I can then open it. Great, you would think.

But alas not: as each iteration of that drawing comes in from the client, we keep getting the same issue. They have cleaned it too (a lot of hatching), but it's causing a headache now here not being able to open and work on it easily.

I do know the client drew it using Vectorworks and he's exporting it as a .dwg for me to use, and he's now removed (most) of the hatching, but it's still causing problems.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be happening here ?

Hatching is always the no 1 culprit for this. Ask the sender to purge all hatching before sending onto you.

Ohh how i dont miss the days of receiving Architects drawings with every square inch covered in one form of hatch or another, then having to strip it all down to put our structure on it, we destroyed masterpieces in some case :)

Hopefully the hatching issue fixes it, but i do know im having some slow spells with Autocad 2015 on my 5 year old laptop at present with minimum hatching....I think all this online/cloud malarkey has slowed alot of programs right down!

Yeah, I've stripped it out, and whilst better, it's crashing my machine 9 times out of 10. And it is only this one project - I can work on any number of others without issue.

Is there any 3d blocks in the drawing? AutoCAD can struggle dealing with 3d blocks if you dont have a fair amount of RAM and a decent processor... I've had many an issue with what appeared to be 2d xrefs from mechanical designers only to discover alot of the elemenst were 3d and were huge in terms of memory, in turn slowing my machines performance considerably, to the point where it crashed frequently if trying to make changes etc.

Flatten, audit & purge - and then head to the cad forum http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1142#

Hey galwaytt - I'm a bit late to the party on this one. We use vectorworks a lot and sometimes encounter the same thing when we export dwg files.

A list of things you should ask the client to do:
    1. Delete ALL fills and ALL solid colours from the vectorworks file before export.
    2. Explode (call ungroup in VW) all grouped objects.
    3. In the export dialog box in VW I have found the following options to help:
    • Export class as DWG Layers
    • Don't export 2D fills
    • Don't export hatch pattern files
    • Don't eport any 3D items
    • Map line weights to colours

Hopefully some one or a combination of these things might help. If it's not a special or private file I'm happy to throw an eye over it for you. (The original VW file I mean - I suspect the export is where the problem lies.)
