IPCOP DSL dialup on Eircom

I've added a Conexant PCI DSL modem to a PC running IPCOP 1.4.10. I'm trying to get it to connect to standard Eircom business broadband. The GUI can be seen in Figure 2.4 here

    http://www.ipcop.org/1.4.0/en/admin/html/section-dialup.html

In the ADSL settings section, I'm using VPI of 8, and VCI of 35. But all the RFC's they mention seem to be related to PPPoA rather than PPPoE which is what I need

    http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=2364
    http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=1483
    http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=2684

I've picked the 1483/2684 option, and PPPoE but left the service and concentrator name blank. I'm using the default eircom broadband username
    and password along with CHAP.

Its not working though. It doesn't connect, doesn't get an IP address,
and the logs just say this

16:41:00 ipcop Starting RED device eth1.
    16:41:20 ipcop dhcpcd fail
    16:41:20 ipcop dhcpcd fail
    16:41:20 ipcop Dial failed: 256
    16:41:20 ipcop Dial failed: 256

Anyone got any ideas, or have it working?.

I had one of these running somewhere, let me have a look about. As far as I remember, it is an odd mix of settings needed to get it to work.
