Permanent Hair Straightening

Hi,

I have looked back on previous threads about permanent hair straightening but still havent found an answer.

Does anyone know any hair salons in Dublin that do permanent hair straightening. Think its called ionic hair straightening, thermal re-conditioning or Yuko system. Basically I think the Japs invented it and it doesnt wreck your hair. Also if anyone has had it done, whats your opinion?

its the yuko system you want done. As far as I am aware know salons do this in Ireland. I think its about 200 pounds to get it done in london though

A freind of mine got it done over in England a little while ago, not sure where(I'll ask). It looks quite good. It cost about 200 ya.
I'll get back to you about where she got it done.

how can they make it permanent? wouldnt they have to change your follicles to do that?

Its the Japenese Yuko treatment you're talking about, its readily available in the UK but afaik not many [if any even] places in Ireland offer it. Its very expensive and can take up to 6 hrs to do.
Now for the science bit

They use chemicals to break the hair's protein bonds then they reshape the bonds by straightening the hair with a hairstraightener then make it permanent by using another chemical. It makes hair look poker straight and super silky soft . I'm not sure how damaging it is to hair though but I'd imagine its fairly harsh. AFAIK it can't be used on highlighted hair.
It needs to be touched up every few months [your curly/wavy roots]

I remember reading in a mag that all the Irish clotheshorse set head over to London to get it done regularly.

I've seen salons advertise permanent hair straightening. I even rang one to ask if they could give me a rough price estimate, but they absolutely refused to give me any idea of a price without a consultation - not a good sign!Take a look in the yellow pages.
I'd love to get opinions from someone who has actually had it done rather than just reading about it in magazines which are probably paid to endorse it. The regrowth would be weird looking I'd imagine so I'd say it would be fairly high maintenance - I'd love to know how long you could get away without a retouch.

seriously just go over to London and get it done.It would be cheaper in the long run.I got mine done last summer and this summer in the compton hair salon in Covent garden. It really is the best thing ever.

Robert Chambers on Liffey Street does it.

They don't have a price up though; you have to go in for a consultation to get a price. They told me I couldn't get it done 'cause I have highlights and it would be terrible for my hair. So I guess it's pretty bad for your hair.

Maybe stick with a straighter. I mean when it grows out (hair grows about an inch every 2 months, right?) the roots are going to be curly, so you'll still have to use a straightner anyway.

My cousin's friend got it done. I think she found it grand but the regrowth was a pain. It apparently looked strange with curly roots and the rest of the hair straight and she ended up just curling her hair to make it look decent. I never saw it though or spoke to her so, I can't really comment.

hi there, hope you dont mind me asking how much was the expereience and what kind of condition your hair is in. mind has been permanently coloured for the last 10years so think that rules me out, sadly..

My hair is in excellent condition and Ive had yuko done twice now. I havent had to use straightners in two years and It realy is straightners that do the most damage to your hair.
The yuko sytem actually protects your hair and makes it look really shiny and lovely. They put a conditioner on it before hand which gives it a lovely shine.
My hair is just passed shoulder length and it cost 200 pounds sterling.I swim a lot and I was sick of having to struggle with the hair dryer and straightners every day so to me it was well worth the money.

Hi,

I'm wondering if there has been any development in finding good proffessional salons in Ireland who will do the Japenese Yuko treatment ?

I would be willing to travel to London to have it done. My problem is my fringe is completely singed (long story) and I just need the fringe treated and not the rest. I have no problem just having a straight fringe and semi curly hair at the back.. Do you think they can do the treatment on one part of the hair?

Any advice would be very helpful. I'm going travelling at the end of January to Thailand and don't want the hassle of bringing straighteners or blowdryers with me

Yeah I've heard about this and was all set to get it done til I heard about the price. I went into Brown Sugar and asked about the price and they said 300+ depending on the length of your hair and the only stylist they had that could do it moved to another salon in Blanchardstown.
Still, when I can afford it, I'll probably get it done.
You can buy a home kit in boots for about €20, but it's better to get it done professionally cause the pH of the chemicals needs to be adjusted according to suit your hair. Otherwise it can fry it :eek:

Lightwaves in Dundrum, not in the Town Center, but on the road leading to it, do it.

I was gonna (I'm a guy with long hair:cool:), but I never bothered, price seemed fair at the time (2 years ago), so I'd say it's cheaper now.

Chemically straightened though, lasts a couple months I think, that's why it was cheap.

You can probably get the permanent done there too.

The new hair that grows out will of course be wavy so you will end up with wavy roots and probably half curly fringe at some stage over the next few months if you get this done. I made enquiries about straightening and was advised that your hair can indeed break off so its a treatment that is quite risky, (probably that is why its not done here, fear of small claims court!). Also if you put straighteners near the treated hair it can break off.

IMHO I would not get my hair straightened like this too risky.

Try Cowboys and Angels in Sth William St - they specialise in it - I haven't had it done myself so can't give personal experience - but I was talking to the stylist and she was explaining that it could be done on parts of the hair if you wanted.

I've had Yuko done on my hair for about 5 years now. I get it done at the official yuko salon in london. Ive never had any problems with breakage or damage to my hair even though I have it done every 6 months. Of course, if you go to a place where the people dont know what they are doing anything can happen.
Ive understood that all the salons that do yuko have to be registered with the salon in london, so I would probably call them to ask where the neares salon that does it is. Their website is http://www.yuko-london.com/ where you can find their details too.

Otherwise I really can not recommend this treatment enough. The only problem is that after getting it done, you cant even imagine going back to your normal hair

And to the person who says that straighteners cant be put through the trated hair, thats rubbish! I curl my hair with ghd's every now and then and it's never been a problem. Even the stylists that do it say that after getting it done you can style it any way you want, just like it'd be naturally straight hair.

I have a question- my hair is naturally afro tight corkscrew curls, as in exactly the same as black hair, and I've been getting my hair relaxed since I was 13 but I'm intrigued by this yoko thing. Has anyone got it done with afro hair and not just curly hair(theres a difference!!) Thanks:)

I have been doing this treatment for more than 4 years in different countries now. I moved to Dublin a year ago I couldn´t find a place with a reasonable price that does this treatment.

Today I finally discovered a hidden place on Pearse St that is run by Chinese people. They do the Permanent Hair Straightening, the one that stays always not the Brazilian Keratine one.

I´ve a very thick curly hair (Latin) so I know that the only treatment that works for me is the permanent one. (also called Japanese or Rebonding)

I stayed there for like 4 hours but it was worth it and I paid 116 euros (of course the price depends on the length of your hair and if you had the treatment done before or not)

The place is called Fantasy Hair & Beauty Salon, 109A Pearse st, Dublin2, and the phone number is 087 140 9960.

They also do all sorts of hair styling and colour, waxing, Gel nails, etc etc.

I knew I had to share this with everybody because I know how annoying can be for someone with curly hair.

I first got mine done in Queen B in Galway in Nov 2008 it lasted a good while and the regrowth is not like curly roots and straight at the ends..it is more like the whole hair eventually starts to go slightly frizzy. Even after 3 mths it was a bit frizzy but was still v relaxed compared to what it used to be. This was the loreal xtenso they used, may not be as good but I didn't know any other place..it was 100eur per hour it is now 200 in total they told me.

I then got it done in kulture curl, they used the wella range. It wasnt as good really, didn't last as long but for the cut and semi colour and straightening it was in or around 100
So wasn't the best but hey, good price!

I had v curly hair when I was younger but then started to go frizzy. I'm not sure where to go next. My curls have completely gone, I just have a bit of frizz now.. it seems to change the texture of your hair ..mine anyway! Which is weird!

Got the 12 wk blo dry keratin based 1 in Bellisamo in Galway and I thought it would be better, I am using the reccommended shampoo and cond but I still find it very drying at the ends especially, disappointing..

I used to get my hair chemically straightened every 18 months or so and was always very happy with the result. Then I got GHD's and used them but found they ruined my hair although I only used them at the weekends.
Now I think it's actually better for my hair to get it straightened once a year or less than to use hair irons on a regular basis. I've asked all the local salons if they chemically straighten hair and they've all said no. They said they stopped doing that as they said it damages hair.
Does anyone know where I can get this done in the Tipperary/Waterford/Kilkenny area? My hair is unruly more than anything else, and gets frizzy if I don't blow dry it. When I had it chemically straightened, I could just flip my head upside down and blow dry, and my hair was straight, full and soft.:)

Hi has anyone had the permanent straightening done in Tian Du, Talbot st, i've medium hair they said they would do it for 89 with 20% off, but i asked what product they use, and she just said it was chinese....i'd like to know a bit more before i get it done...ive got the 12 wk blow dry done 3 times its good but the cheapest was €120. let me know if anyone has had it done there..

I don't know if anyone's still looking for places that do the hair straightening in Dublin, but I got mine done recently in a place called Koreana on Parnell St. and they were all amazing in there. I love having it done. It's so handy and there's a great shine off my hair. They're also relatively cheap, when you consider the price of an average wash and blowdry. For a bob, it was only €99. And for over the shoulder, it's €119.

Seriously thinking of getting my hair permanently straightened and might just give that Koreana place a shot! I've gotten the 12 wk blowdry done twice now ...do you still have to straighten your hair now that it's been "permanently straightened"? Finding the 12 wk blowdry okay but perhaps the permanent straightening would be less work in the mornings?!

Well my hair was super curly... And when I got a bob cut in was shocking hard to manage... So it def takes time off my daily hair doing

I'm real glad I got it now, have to say...
And it's not expensive in comparison to getting a normal wash and blowdry...

Hi everyone, this is the first board that actually gave a few places in Ireland doing the chemical straightening. I'm from Kerry and have absolutely no hope in finding someone down here but I was delighted to hear that I won't have to go to London to get it done now. Dublin will be so much handier. I have crazy frizzy hair ever since my hairdresser put a cleanse in it to lighten the colour. Before I got the cleanse it was half frizz, half curl but now it's pure frizz. Does anyone know if i'l be able to get it done after the cleanse? Plus which is the best place in Dublin to get it done? I'm not interested in the 12 week blow dry atall after hearing such horrible stories. Just the chemical straightening please. Thanks, Kerrie

Like I've said previously on here, would def recommend "Koreana" on Parnell St in Dublin. I'm not sure how it works with the cleanse but they're shocking helpful so why not just give them a ring?

Has anyone noticed that their hair has changed texture since getting chemical straightning/12 week blow dry? My hair used be very frizzy but curly when I would use mousse but now it has changed and the curl has gone and it is jus frizzy....
Any other tips on chemical straightning in Dub?

On Babyboo's recommendation I went to Koreana last week for the permanent straightening. Very friendly and delighted with the results! Only €120, my hair was incredibly difficult to manage before the treatment, now it takes me 5 minutes! :-)

Hi Babyboo!

Ill be in Dublin on june 29th and 30th and then goin to glasgow for a couple of days, live in sweden and theres nowhere near me that does the Yuko/japanese straightening. Ill have to do it in Dublin, how long before you did it did you actually have to go in there for consultation and make an appointment? Can I go in and have it done the same day or the day after u think? Sure I could give em a ring now but would that be enough? I really need to do it on the 29th or 30th, preferably 29th, and I don't get to dub until reeeeal late on the 28th.
I cant wait to get this done:)

I did a lot of research into hair straightening as I have terrible fuzzy 'hair' that Ive been straightening for years with a GHD, it was so dry and damaged from this tho (broken hairs all over my head), I tried the 12 wk blowdry twice, both times I was disappointed. I think it just doesnt work on really uncontrollable frizzy hair.

I find I seem to know more than most Irish hairdressers about permanent hair straightening (and Im no hairdresser!) I tried numerous salons but found most hadnt a clue. I had looked into both Yuko and IHR in London and was going to go there for IHR (think it seems better) until I came across a place in Belfast called Capelli. I contacted the owner through facebook and she got back to me and said she had years of experience doing it (you just have to go on trust I suppose!) So I decided to give it a go one wknd and drove up from Dublin.

And it was brill, couldnt believe sthg had finally worked! I completely understand when people say its life changing (only women whose lifes are controlled by their fuzzy hair can understand... ) I normally had to have weekly blow drys just to keep it in control. The small annoying part tho was I had to leave it down for 3 day after and couldnt even put it behind my ears (was so frustrating!!) It got so greasy too that the next time Im doing it Im off work a few days after. The biggest test for me was a sun holiday, my friends used to christen me Monica from friends so I couldnt believe how good my hair was in humid conditions. I did have to blowdry after washing to get a sleek, straight look but I was able to put away my GHD. For me, this was unbelievable!

I feel its expensive though - I paid £320 for shoulder length v thick hair (the hairdresser said Id quite thick hair) and I was hoping I would get at least 6 months out of it but after 4 months the roots were bad so Im going up again at the end of the month - it will be 5 months then

However, I only had to get the odd blowdry for a special occasion after getting this done.

I highly recommend IHR, I was afraid it would wreck my hair but it really is the GHD that ruins it, it was so healthy after getting it done - pm me if any questions

Like I said in my previous threads, Koreana are in Dublin (On Parnell St), they only charge €120 for shoulder length hair, and it last me for nearly 6 months...

I got it done about 4 weeks ago in a hairdressers called- Violet (I think) on Parnell St.

E120. They wash your hair, put all this gloopy stuff on it and then wash it again and dry/straighten it, then more gloopy stuff, then wash again and finally, dry it and thats the finished product.

I wash my hair in the morning, towel dry it, brush it through and fly out the door. Sometimes I give it a quick blast with the hairdryer, but only a minute or two and my hair is straight for the rest of the day. Its so handy and I would definitely recommend it. I used to hate faffin about for an hour + with blow drying straight and hair straighteners- just can't be arsed.

I got my hair straightened in Koreana on Parnell st in August based on the recommendations in this thread. Absolutely delighted with the results! I had long frizzy-curly hair that would take me a couple of hours to style. Now I just wash it and let it dry naturally. It's perfectly straight.
Now I'm beginning to notice regrowth, obviously. It's not bad enough yet to make me want to restraighten, but I will sometime in the next few months.
My question is this- is the cost of the touch up treatment the same as the initial treatment? (In my case this was €180 as I also got my hair cut). Also, is the touch up treatment as intense as the initial treatment? For example on the day I got my hair straightened it was chemically treated then cut. Before it was cut around two inches at the ends were unbelievably dry and so, cut off. I'm trying to grow my hair but I'm wondering if I go back for a touch up, will the amount of hair that has grown in the last few months just need to be cut off?

Can anyone clarfy what type of straightening they had done in Koreana please??

I am only interested in IHR as Im delighted with the results so far. This is what I get done in Belfast but its a lot more expensive than what Koreana charge (and also involves a long trip to Belfast). Dublin would be so much handier.

I go to Capelli which is a small salon outside Belfast. The hairdresser there was saying she cant understand the hairdressers in the Republic, she said shes an IHR agent and tried to introduce it but she said hairdressers are afraid of it and worried it can damage hair. I think Im proof of the opposite!

The first time I got it done was May and it cost £320 (incl hair cut). The touch up (after 5 months, and by then v. noticebale regrowth) then cost me £280 (no hair cut needed). When I got my retouch done I thught it would be the same price as thats what Id been told but they ended up charging me less so I was delighted. I didnt need my hair cut as the ends remain straight and the hairdresser just applied the chemicals to the regrowth (which was about half way down my hair) So in answer to the previous poster I dont see what you would have to cut you hair as long as you are looking after it well and regularly deep conditioning which I was told I had to do. The second application did take almost as long as the first.

I do wonder if getting this done 2/3 times a year is bad for hair... but I really cant manage my hair without it and was straightening on a daily basis so this was worse Im sure!

Ok so I decided to ring Koreana, the guy didnt seem to know what IHR was! Said they use Schwarzkopf, Im not sure if thats good or not though all the people on here seem more than happy with results. Any experts out there to advise?? Im v tempted as its much cheaper and nearer but I think Ill be sticking to my salon in Belfast as the results are amazing, better the devil you know and all that!

So i have a question on the final result. Does it look sleek and straight as if you just got it straight with you GHD?
I have somewhat wavy hair and frizzy, but it's not very curly. However i hate how it looks if i dont straighten it as it looks a bit unruly, specially at the ends, all going in diff directions and not very nice.
If i had this done, will i achieve the GHD look without the hassle?? :rolleyes:

I think it really depends on you hair and Im not a hairdresser so have no idea if it would be the result you want at the end! I imagine theres no way to know until you do it. Think you would be lucky tho in that I have really curly roots so dont get long enough out of it, wish I had less curly hair cos it would last much longer! I wouldnt say my hair is GHD sleek but its like a good blowdry. I still need my serums etc and it still needs to be blowdried after washing. I think theres no magic formula to change you hair, my hair is still my hair but its straight (not the naturally sleek hair i envy on other people) However as Ive thick hair it has retained the volume I like in it. Its kinda flat the first few wks but the thickness/volume then comes back.

Bear in mind with the IHR I had done you cant wash your hair for 3 days (so its v greasy by the 3rd day), you cant tie it up even put it behind your hair. I do find this torture.. And for 2 WEEKS I wasnt allowed tie it up at all (to prevent bends forming) This was really tough as couldnt go to gym properly and I do tie to my hair alot normally. I do find my hair a bit drier this time around, more than the first time, and I use really good conditioners eg kerastase and moroccan oil. So although Im very happy with the results I do feel theres no easy way to achieve manageable hair, it does take work and patience and money!
