Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Linux Use In Dublin

Are there many ppl here on Boards.ie living in Dublin that use Linux? Anyone interested in forming a LUG? I haven't much experience in Linux apart from burning .iso's and installing it but I can download different versions and do copies for ppl. We could pool our experiences with Linux and build on that. Seems strange that Dublin hasn't got a LUG already.

sure - count me in. i am experienced in Linux (Slackware/RH/FC/Knoppix) aswell as Solaris and AIX.

    Keep me posted

    Count me in as well.

Have got experience on following distributions:

    - RedHat Linux 8 -9
    - Fedora Core 1 - 4
    - SuSE Linux 7 - 9.3 (haven't tested 10 yet)
    - Gentoo Linux
    - FreeBSD 5 (haven't tried 6 yet)
    - Solaris 10 (Not really a Linux, but hey, it's free)
    - Mandriva (formerly Mandrake)
    - Knoppix 3.4 - 4.0
    - Debian 3.0 (but I don't know that much about it)
    - Ubuntu 5.04 - 5.10

    Running on the following platforms:

    - i386
    - PowerPC

In the moment I'm running Fedora Core 4 as production system for my Internet Gateway, Gentoo 2005.1 on my PowerBook G4 beside Mac OS X, it also runs as PC version on my learning machine. Knoppix is used for recovery or to show people about Linux that want to learn about it, and all the other distributions were running on my learning machine, each for some time.

Great. I've sent a post to th ILUG mailing list asking for suggestions/info re setting up our own LUG. With any luck there will be more ppl over there interested as well.

I would be interesting in joining, have some experience installing a load of Linux flavours. Some experience admining Redhat and Debian boxes. Will have a load of experience with Solaris 10 soon as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

I'm also interested. I have experience with redhat 9, FC3, RHEL4 and ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10 all on i686 machines.

Count me in, I guess I'd still be considered a Linux n00b but I'm getting pretty experienced now, I mostly use SuSe 10 on my laptop and have dabbled in Debian, Knoppix and Mandriva. I'd certainly be interested in going to a Dublin based LUG.

I have Ubuntu dual booting with XP on my home PC but I can't use it due to a compatability issue with my MS wireless mouse I haven't gotten fixed yet...

I'll be installing Fedora Core on my laptop soon on the condition I'll be able to get my Linksys wireless pcmcia card working on it.

I have an old PowerPC at home I'm going to install FreeBSD on over the network at some point. Might do it when I get home

    Hi all,
I got IMO a lack-lustre response from Linux.ie maining list. They seem to think that the Dublin Linux users are already well catered for through POTD (Pints Of The Day) and other events etc and to find out about these you sucribe to social@linux.ie. Also told to checkout irc.linux.ie.

Here's the thread started by my email mentioned above: http://www.linux.ie/lists/pipermail/ilug/2005-December/085151.html (just click on NEXT to continue reading posts)

Dunno what you all wanna do now. Want to checkout a POTD or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭zekiel

Its shame its you cant set one up like that.. I'd also be interested in taking part.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

You could just go ahead and set up a little sister LUG. It won't be official or anything, but would be a nice excuse for some boards peoples to go for beers. Maybe even a Boards.ie UNIX forum group or something.

Yeah count me in I have a good bit of desktop experience and a a growing amount of admin experience. Yeah just make it a Boards.ie LUG, BLUG has a ring to it. See can we get a forum and mailing lost going

No need for a forum methinks, a mailing list would suffice, there is a risk of a new forum taking precedence over this one.

BLUG is a great idea. I'm not in the Dublin region at all, I'm on the other side of the country, however I will be in Dublin on January 6th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

We'll then your officaial signup date can be Jan6th :v:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Yeah BLUG has a good ring to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Wanna change the tread titile to BLUG? and we can keep this going as the boardsie end of things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

    Yeah I'm cool with that.

    <sniff> this feels like a historic moment <sniff> ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭zekiel

Well if it was going to be a blug.. maybe a sub forum could be created.. ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Nah, the forum's quiet enough as it is, without having a sub-forum IMO.

I'm going on holidays on the 7th to rest my weary bones, but I could try to make the 6th.

This kind of thread is exactly how unreal.ie started. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭zekiel

Yeh I suppose, maybe a mailing list then would be a nice touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Yup defo. Who will be the mailing master?

Lets go oldskool. Usenet Group/Google Group..
Meh... it's quiet enough in here without sucking some of the threads away to Google groups.
Why not just keep on as we are here and have a sticky for meets etc.?
Or am I missing something.

    Scrap the cap!

    Mailing List:v:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Now we got the basics how about we start lloking at what we want from our BLUG. Like are there many ppl here who'd like to try Linux but don't know how to install it or whats right for their system etc or just a bit nervous mucking with their sysytem on their own? If yes maybe we could have a meet somewhere and give them an intro to Linux. Whatever way it goes I think we should have a meet to really get the ball rolling.

Here's some interesting hints/suggestions on setting up a LUG:

Arguably, a well-maintained Web site is the one must-have, among those Internet resources. My essay Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group(http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Linux_PR/newlug.html), for that reason, spends considerable time discussing Web issues. Quoting it (in outline form):

    You need a Web page.
Your Web page needs a reasonable URL.
You need a regular meeting location.
You need a regular meeting time.
You need to avoid meeting-time conflicts.
You need to make sure that meetings happen as advertised, without fail.
You need a core of several Linux enthusiasts.
Your core volunteers need out-of-band methods of communication.
You need to get on the main lists of LUGs, and keep your entries accurate.
You must have login access to maintain your Web pages, as needed.
Design your Web page to be forgiving of deferred maintenance.
Always include the day of the week, when you cite event dates. Always check that day of the week, first, using gcal.
Place time-sensitive and key information prominently near the top of your main Web page.
Include maps and directions to your events.
Emphasise on your main page that your meeting will be free of charge and open to the public (if it is).
You'll want to include an RSVP "mailto" hyperlink, on some events.
    Use referral pages.
Make sure every page has a revision date and maintainer link.
    Check all links, at intervals.
You may want to consider establishing a LUG mailing list.
You don't need to be in the Internet Service Provider business.
Don't go into any other business, either.
Walk the walk. (Do the LUG's computing on Linux.)

Rest of document can be found here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO-5.html

I think it's a bad idea to be so seperate from ILUG. If people want a mailingl list, why not ask for a linux.ie one? Same for webspace. Or if you want to do events, why not just do them as ILUG events? Boards.ie Linux users and ILUG don't have to be and shouldn't be seperate entities. What is the goals of this BLUG? Are they seperate from the goals of ILUG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

sounds like a good idea, branching off from the ilug completely is probably not the best way to go about it but holding regular meetings in dublin would be good,
im currently an admin with netsoc in dit, i could probably organise a venue for meetings in on of the dit campus' around dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Make sure you all either sign up on the ggroup or send the email my friends.

I do think that the "BLUG" should be autonomous. My reasoning is that the established community would be based on the values and ethics of Boards.ie, and could avoid the rather elitist reputation that the ILUG has been awarded.
This doesn't not mean that any "BLUG" should be isolated or in competition with the ILUG though!

I don't think google groups, etc. is necessary or desirable when it's Boards.ie based ..and has a perfectly (well, almost perfectly) working vBulletin.

I'll enter myself as nooB, with what limited knowledge and (even more) limited download/burning resources that I have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Yeah I agree but we were just coming from the easiest way to get a mailinglist going as having a forum or thread here could get messy eventually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

If we delete our posts discussing GGroups, etc. and look how tidy the thread is:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

But wait till people start asking advice(",)

I'm a sysadmin at UCD's netsoc. However we don't run a lot of events. Note: Having nearly all your committe in final year is not a good idea!

I'm up for this. I'm a Gentoo user mainly but have experience in Red Hat/Fedora, FreeBSD, and have dabbled in Debian.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

    sign u sign up ;p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

I'd like to see us have our own web-page hosted on linux.ie along with our own mailing list. I don't think being separete from ILUG is the way to go either but I definitely think there is a demand there for meet-ups etc.

@Master: So how many members do we have now? Has everyone signed up? How about a roll-call of signed up members?

So when are we going to have our first meet-up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

So far 11members with two active mailing list topics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Deadly. Thats a great start. So when we gonna have our first meet up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

I was thinking of announcing ourselves to ILUG asking them for a mailing list and some webspace. Eveyone cool with that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

    Yeah approve.
