Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

MYOB - I know! I don't have great info for Galway. The Oranmore BP opened in 1986 (from a Sabre thread) but the Galway Inner Bypass part that the M6 joins to was sometime from 1995-2000 according to OSI emaps.

The so called inner bypass (bothar Na dTreabh) was opened in stages between 84 & 96. I can't remember righlty when QB was opened (the quincentenial bit is a hint, Galway celebrated 500 years as a majoral town in 1984). The next two sections (between the Headford & Monviea Rds) were opened up in 1987. The next two linking them into the DC to Oranmore (built in the early 90s) was opened in 1996 (edit - just checked the 1995 OSI map, it's not there so it was '96).

I can see it was't there in 95, but are you sure it was 96?

It's a bit sad but you'll notice that on my site I have things like Enfield to Edenderry listed even though this is an R-road - in this day and age you have to take what you can get!

    Not at all!

With most of the motorways built secondary and regional roads are much in need of improvement.

Was wandering, basically lost, on the edge of the city near Tyrellstown and noticed some fairly hefty projects underway.

Some roads were being upgraded from single to dual carriageway and some others (basically country lanes) were being completely realigned.

    Anyone got any details?

    As I say - I was lost!

I remember it opening during a summer, can't remember was it 95 or 96. Given the fact that it took a few months to build the roads in question (iirc started at about easter) and it's not in the OSI maps for 95 I'm leaning towards 96.

I'm postive however that it was open in Sept 1996.

Thanks for that, but I notice roads that opened in 2004 are shown in the 2005 map as still UC, so I think the year is the year they collated their images and the photos were taken the previous year.
So the Galway road could still have been opened in 1995.

Yep, this article says it was 1984.

The bridge itself was started ( just about) in 1984 and was named after the celebrations that took place that year although the work on its approach roads..particularly the eastern one...had started maybe 2 years earlier. It opened around 1987 I think...perhaps 1986. The first bit that opened was Corrib Park to Newcastle road, I think...or else Tuam Road - Ballybrit Roundabout and that would have been in 1984 or so.

The missing link to finish the DC from Ballybrit to Oranmore could have been opened as late as 1997.

That was the M2-Blanchardstown/Tyrellstown link road, discussed here. It crept in right under our noses!

The motorways that are built are all south of Galway and east of Maynooth. So before they start looking at these secondary roads in these parts they may want to look at the primary roads of a massive part of the country whose roads have been neglected.

Even if they managed a motorway Maynooth to SLigo or even Longford, it would keep most of the West happy as lots of us could join in half way to Dublin at Longford. Or even get some start on the Tuam Bypass. The N17 and N5 still remain some of the most difficult and dangerous roads to drive in the country. Pity the money assigned for the BMW area by europe wasn't spent in the disadvantaged BMW area by the previous goverment.

not to mention that the M17 will finish a bare 40km from the biggest town in Mayo, Castlebar, and only 20km from Claremorris and Ballyhaunis.
And Westport is "behind" Castlebar so also benefits from the motorway linkup as they have to go via Castlebar where they are only 40km from the Motorway.

when that is finished you will suddenly see mayo people clambering to have the road to Tuam from Mayo being upgraded as the N5 will become irrelevant to a swathe of the south of the county!

The ballindine section to Milltown(all in Galway) is the worst piece of road between sligo and Limerick, so i will be looking for it to be done. Five people killed on it in the just the last year alone.
The Mayo section is relatively okay, then they need to start on the curry to colloney section:D

M17 won't be tolled based on the information I've researched.

This has been discussed a few times on the M17/18 project thread.

There is no planning permission for a toll (let alone 2 as has been suggested) and changing the plans now would probably require extra land to be purchased.

Unless they go the M50 route with barrier free tolling, there will be no toll on this road. The barrier free option is costing the M50 operators a lot of money to run, so its unlikely that this will be a viable option for a new concession.

N17 Castletown bends scheme ( between Tuam and Milltown) starting this month. About 1km long. This scheme was originally tendered in 2008 but abandoned and retendered.

    http://www.galwaynews.ie/25158-major-works-begin-n17
Realignment works between Tuam and Milltown at the Castletown junction are expected to begin in two weeks time.
Contracts were signed this week and work on the road is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

The Milltown-Ballindine stretch is earmarked for two schemes, probably not this year though.

In fairness how many times have we been told that NX/N11 will be starting "next quarter"?

I think a lot of people are in the "I'll believe it when I see them digging" camp when it comes to a lot of these projects.

Following from a post in a different thread, i've gone over my own records and noticed that the following schemes were all suspended in 2011 but have since been reactivated:

N2 Slane BP [note: refused PP but will likely be re-submitted]
N3 North of Kells - Cavan [surprised by this; doesn't seem very important]
N4 Collooney / Castlebaldwin [note: planned as SC instead of dual]
    N5/N26/N58 Turlough to Bohola
    N5 Westport to Turlough
    M7 Naas - Newbridge 4 to 6 lanes
    N8 Jct 19 Dunkettle Interchange
    N11/N25 Oilgate to Rosslare Harbour
    N17 Collooney to Tobercurry
    N21 Adare BP
    N22 Ballyvourney to Macroom
    N24 Pallasgreen to Cahir
    N25 Waterford to Glenmore
    N52 Ardee Bypass
N56 Dungloe to Glenties (one part already u/c)
    N56 Mountcharles to Inver
    N59 Clifden to Oughterard
    N59 Moycullen Bypass
    N59 Westport to Mulranny
    N69 Listowel By Pass
    N81 Tallaght to Hollywood Cross
    N86 Tralee to An Daingean

N6 Jct 20-22 Galway City Outer BP [note: still marked as suspended but likely to be reactivated once court battle is over]

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 5,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭spacetweek

Just for the record, the following are still suspended but strongly needed:
    N4 Mullingar - Longford - Rooskey
N4 Carrick on Shannon to Dromod

    N15 Ballybofey / Stranorlar Bypass
    M20 Limerick-Cork (Northern Section)
    M20 Limerick-Cork (Southern Section)
    N21 Adare to Abbeyfeale
N22 Cork Northern Ring Road (M8-M20)
    N24 Carrick-on-Suir BP
    N25 Carrigtwohill to Midleton

Commencing 2013? my own guesses tbc

    PPP Projects:
    N7/N11 Newlands Cross / Arklow-Rathnew (N7/N11: 1.8km / 16.5km)
    M17/M18 Gort to Tuam (56.2km)
Both of the above PPP are 2013 Ministerial priorities; see point 4 via link.

    Other potential projects:
    M7 Widening Naas to M7/M9 Interchange ???
    M8/N8/N25/N40 Dunkettle Interchange ???
    N52 Ardee Bypass 4.5km ???
    N56 Scheme ???

Definitely selection of Minor Works Schemes:
Overrun from Minor Works Construction Starts 2012
Progress to construction of Minor Works at Planning Stage 2012

In terms of 2013 commencements I cannot see anything else at present.

Corrections to any of the above (completed, under construction, commencements) most welcome.

The widening of the M9-N7 interchange looks to have started based on posts in the M7 thread and AAroadwatch traffic alert, probably worth adding.

Should also add in the N67 improvement Ballinderreen - Kinvara was under construction last year (as of October, the last time I was out that direction, it was in construction).

Just as there is no confusion, the widening of the M9 - M7 interchange is a totally different project to the proposed widening of M7 to 3 lanes from Naas to M9, this project will probably commence this year in conjunction ot the new Kerry Foods development in Millenium Park as I believe it's part of the deal

Its quite outdated as it stands - one of the projects is complete at this stage!

Nope, but the Osberstown interchange (used be called Millennium Park) is apparently going to be part of it, according to Kildare Co Co.

I would expect the next phase of the Dungloe-Glenties N56 project to go to tender imminently, it was meant to late last year. Land is CPOed and extensive geotech work has been done. This is the hardest section of the route and the most badly needed, as its bypassing the Gweebarra Bends.

Nice and simple, with no need to rename it. There can be a minor roads thread as well, might help to clear up some clutter.
