5.1 Surround Sound - Advice Needed

Story All,

Hope yee can recommend me on the final part of the HE puzzle for me

I have a 42" LG with UPC Digital TV

I need a surround sound system that I can hook up/play Xbox, Apple TV & UPC through

The rear speakers need to have stands and my budget would range from €250 - €350, will stretch that budget if necessary

I'm based in Dublin, so any recommendations on any brick & motor shop or online would be hugely appreciated

What would you recommend..?

Richer sounds on the talk to... Section of this site will See you right. Think they have a deal on pioneer speakers with the vsx 421. That fits in your price range.

I don't think the Sony one will take an input from the Upc box or an apple tv. Most of those type units don't except. Inputs from other devices.

The Sony box has two HDMI inputs so will support the Apple TV, it also has left and right phono (RCA) ports and an optical port for audio 'in' so can take analog or digital sound from the UPC box.

All of them take input from other sources, otherwise (in the case of this Sony box) you'd be buying a standalone Blu-Ray player with speakers and an integrated amp. with no possiblity to connect a TV/Xbox/PS3/Sky/UPC/AppleTV which would make no sense.

Cheers lads for the help and replies. Went into Sony centre and had a look at the one I posted. Has optical i/o and nice piece of kit overall, so gonna go ahead with it,

If it's not too late, I wouldn't bother with the Sony. Your money would be far better spent on an AV Receiver. This one is an excellent one and is very cheap:

Then for speakers you could pick something like these:

You'd have an excellent system then that will blow that Sony out of the water and will connect to anything you're likely to get, with 4 HDMI inputs, Coax input, SPDIF input, a few Stereo L+R inputs, Component input, composite inputs and S-video inputs.
It also decodes Dolby True HD and DTS HD sound too and is 7.1 capable if you like.
Then in the future all you need to do to get better sound is to upgrade your speakers. Can't do that with an all-in-one system.

OP, I'd second that recommendation. Sony kit is generally overpriced and that Denon AV Receiver is a cracking price plus will give you lost more connectivity options.

Just so you're aware, the AVR1910 is a 2009 model, the current (2011) model is the AVR-1912 which is £300 so you'd be getting the older model for half the price of the current one and probably 95% of the functionality.

Whathifi should downgrade that rating IMO. This AMP (amongst others I do admit) needs a firmware upgrade to play the latest 7.1 lossless codecs. For example the latest releases of LOTR and Star Wars on Bluray will not play using this Amp bitstreamed from a player. It requires a firmware upgrade released not so long ago. That requires posting back to Denon in the UK at your cost, unless whoever you buy it off can do it for you first. Just so you know before you jump

Fair point, it doesn't have a network port so you can't do a firmware upgrade at home. Anyway the OP has disappeared so I'd say he's playing with his new Sony kit and doesn't care what we're saying at this stage.
