On a simialr note, this creep off the Numberjacks on CBeebies completely freaks out my young fella, he legs it out of the room if he hears the music, I can kind of see why...

There was an episode of the Winnie The Pooh animated show where all the main characters were shrank and went under Christopher Robin's bed or something to confront a big ball of slime/dirt that was under there... it freaked the hell out of me as a kid.

Also, an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark gave me nightmares for years: a character opens the door of a cupboard that contains something...and this pair of the most evil-looking, glowing red eyes stares back out... I screamed and was crying for hours, so freaked out was I by said eyes. and every time the lights went out, I kept thinking those red eyes were going to be staring at me. Had to sleep with the light on for months!!!:(

When the Wind Blows, had me looking for the local nuclear shelter.

That film gave me a genuine terror of Nuclear war as a 6year old. Thats not a fear a child that young should have!

I remember in the late 80's I saw this claymation animation on RTE
,I think it might have been French, about a clown at the circus who suddenly found he couldent take off his makeup and everywhere he go's people are laughing at him.Eventually he ends up hanging himself.

That freak! He was evil! The way he hawed at the windscreen and slowly wiped it clean. It's something a serial killer would do.

And why did he constantly un-knit himself and make people follow the thread until they found him? It's like leaving a trail of your own blood behind, a sickening Hansel & Gretel twist thrown out by a psychotic puppet.

Others agree: his freakiness is in the urban dictionary definition of pob.

Upload it to Image Shack and you'll get the code, not sure if that's the quickest way but it works.

There was another one but I can't remember the name
I know there were goblins and trolls and they had a song
And the boss had a pit and if a solider failed him they would be thrown to the crabs in the pit to be killed
    Upsetting

There was a cartoon also set in India with a fat cat as the Raj.
And he'd have other characters executed

You're thinking about The Dreamstone, the head nasty was called Zordrak I believe.

Does anyone else remember this programme on RTE and maybe even TG4 back in the mid 90's.
I've no idea if it was all puppets or half puppets, half real actors.

But, the main "Bad guy" was this kind of sock-puppet otter type of thing. And he planned to kidnap the children in the house, and bring them through the Wardrobe to his land / dimension.

All I remember is that that character was really sinister, and to this day, the memory of him freaks the shoite out of me!

nota "childhood cartoon" but still creepy in its day

i have chucky 1- 5 and still love a good marathon of it - 5 is just awful though... awful :(
Ya I know it's not exactly a childhood cartoon but I saw it in childhood because our older brothers weren't supposed to watch it so made us watch it as well so we couldn't tell lol :o Brothers are cruel :D
Upload it to Image Shack and you'll get the code, not sure if that's the quickest way but it works.
    Thanks :)

The Banana Splits scared me too. There was something quite menacing about them.

Also speaking of banana's, The Bananas In Pyjamas really frightened me as well. There was an underlying evil current to them.

Dafthead from Worzel Gummidge used to scare the bejayus outta me

Not all cartoons, but this one really freaked me out when I seen it as a child

You have to be of a certain age but Flaherty's garden on Bosco was some surreal stuff.
Rte always seemed to show it out of sequence so that just added to the eeriness.

It was Beckett with stop motion animation.

Ren and Stimpy, that show still disturbs me

specifically remember one episode where Stimpy picks his belly button and gets pulled into it by "belly button fluff people" who attack him.

Its like they were made by psychotic savages on acid.

Not a cartoon I think but there used to be an ad for the TV license that scared me. It was about the 'TV SPONGERS' and had a sponge that was hung out on a washing line. Mam says I used to go and hide in the hedge when it came on.

    Does anybody remember that ad?

Think this was called Under the Mountain . It was about some creepy aliens or something and it scared the crap out of me ! Looking at this clip I can see why!

"TV spongers beware, the squeeze is on!"

I remember that one alright, cheapo sponges sitting in front of the telly. It was quite a good ad as I remember, I think you would need to ask the RTE if they had it in their Archive if you wanted to see it again though.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 9,441 ✭✭✭old hippy

I'd love to link to images for this one but I can never figure out which of the icons enables it...

A film that Hanna Barbera made in the 60s about this kid who enters a cartoon world and encounters all manner of odd characters. Scared me senseless, aged 2 or 3 :D

    The Phantom Tollbooth

there were a few of those ads, I rememer one where there was just one sponger sitting on a stool and some big hook dragged him off it.

Y'd probably have to ask someone in the RTE archives for a copy of it

Monster incorporated was the scariest film ever.

  • Registered Users Posts: 217 ✭✭StevieNicksFan

The episode of Goosebumps with the talking dummy that kills people really unsettles me even to this day..its even freakier than Chucky! The episode was called 'Night of the Living Dummy' I think

There was another episode called 'Say cheese or die' about a polaroid camera that took pics of the future. There was one scene where the guy took a pic of someones new car and when it developed, the car was completely wrote off..the person who owned it had a car crash the next day. Also when he took pics of people, some would appear invisible and they would subsequently disappear......freaky stuff!

Saw this when I was about 7. I'm yet to see anything scarier.

0:38. When it cuts to the Goblins. That front and centre guy who says "listen". That guy was the one who I imagined being under my bed or creeping around in the dark in my room.

Not so much scary as disturbing and crushing.

In summary. As an 80's kid there were always puppets and I was always crying.

This isn't from my childhood but deserves a mention.

The 90's Batman cartoon freaked me out a bit, especially villains like the Joker and , shudder, Two-Face. Looking back on it, it was quite dark for a kids' cartoon. I'd love to watch that again if I could find it.

For those who don't remember( hell, even the opening was a bit scary):

Also, "Cow and Chicken" freaked me out a bit even though it wasn't out-and-out scary. There was quite a nilhilistic vibe off it that I think I picked up on as it made me feel sad and empty inside , it just unnerved me how you never saw their parents' torsos. Yeah, I was a sad child. :P

Whilomena the whirlegig witch from Forty Coats and Sneaky Snake from Wanderly Wagon scared the crap out of me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Acacia

Powerpuff girls was freaking badass for the most part. I loved it. There was, however, one villain who scared the living shït out of me.

    Him.

That cartoon villain was the damned incarnation of evil, he even looked like Satan. Fücking creepy bastard. Still scares me, in fact, he's like a nightmare man.

    The voice on him

Trap door used to scare me as a kid... Although, looking at it now, the guy looks kinda lovable...

  • Registered Users Posts: 227 ✭✭chirogirl

There was a kids programme in the 1970's called Jamie and his magic torch, the start of the programme would scare me so much I'd hide behind the sofa.

Oh courage the cowardly dog.... I can't believe I forgot about that... scariest cartoon ever seriously, gave me nightmares as a kid!
