Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nothing wrong with them Micras really. They will go forever, and they're real popular as first cars for learner drivers.

Indeed. Cheap means of transport. Nothing to go wrong in them, even has a cam chain, good for 150k miles. This one is a 3 door, 10 times less ugly than the 5 door too :D

There is no cheaper motoring than this...

    Still prefer a 99/00 m3 that wouldn't cost much more than 330ci.
Tax is the same on both.
    Fuel consumption isn't too different.
But there is a huge difference in power, not shy of 100bhp and the noise difference is in a different chapter altogether.

Tax on a 330Ci is 1390 for the year

Tax on M3 is 1683. considerable difference.

    Consumption would be relatively similar.

330Ci would be much cheaper to repair and maintain, As M parts command a premium as does labour cost and associated inspections.
It costs alot to maintain an M3 correctly plenty of idiots have tried and failed leaving alot of abused M3's on the market in this country.

Doesn't seem to be tested or taxed. That's 105 euro more before you even change a bulb :P

Can someone give me the lowdown on these model clio's? Anything that is prone to go wrong with them?Reliable engine? My Dad had two Renault lagunas in the past where the gearbox went so he has me warned off french cars. :D

The sunroof leaks in all of them. I've not seen one without a leaky sunroof. Prepare the silicone sealant if you get it. Apart from that, there grand, tidy handling car with a surprising amount of space.

Did over 200k miles in my 95 clio no probs apart from a clutch and usual belts and wheel bearings

The smart with the backpack? I liked that car, quirky looking :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Yup! Someone spotted it, said they've been in the market for a Smart for a while and made a decent offer on it. Not thrilled about being without it as it was hilarious to drive. Only car I've actually laughed in every time I drove it, it was insane to be able to get the back out at 30mph and control it. So most of the money'll clear off a credit card, and then I'll get a banger with tax/test.

There was a nice 75 diesel a few pages back for a grand..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Really undecided. Half of me says get something manageable, I'm closing up the painting business due to Ireland being a damp sponge permenantly, so I could get something 1 litrery that sips fuel. Other half of me says get something interesting to drive and tax it for a year and just enjoy it. Had looked into Preludes, always had a soft spot for those, and there's a nice one Cork, the final model shape, seems in decent nick and has a test until December.

Was also thinking T Bar MR2, but I gig at weekends, so I can't get gear into one of those.

I'm actually going to go tyre kicking this weekend. Only requirement I have is that the dash must be double-din for my satnav head unit. Will be weird to go around looking at cars rather than fixing them.

It'd kill me to get into one which didn't have all the toys mine had again.

Actually now that I think of it, 4 requirements! Doh. Double Din for the stereo, aircon, sunroof and heated seats. Gotten way too used to heated seats in the last 3 cars. I'm amazed I don't have piles.

Sorry to hear that, your work looked incredibly tasty in the pics you and others posted.

About the cars, air con and a sunroof can be a rarity, was never a huge sunroof dude tbh.

I used to like sunroofs, but with modern aircon, they're a bit obsolete, no?

And as for heated seats - really? In our very mild climate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

God yes. Heated seats are fantastic. I've lived with them permenantly on for the last few years.

Happened me in the e30, hit the brakes hard and the water came off the roof and down the gap in my shirt.

On the fiat, if you used the windscreen washer with the roof open you'd get soaked

again, no tax or test and aftermarket DRL's but i think the price is just about right if you want a good go-er of a car.

The brave? The foolish more like. That price is ridiculous. No NCT means the car is not worth more than a couple of hundred. €1,500 hahaha

Yeah, a 12 years old French executive car with a "large" (by the local standards) petrol engine, no NCT, 150k miles on the clock and plenty of electric gizmos for over a grand is not a bargain in any way IMO.

Got to agree, 500 quid is loads for it. But it shouldnt be dismissed altogether though. Those yokes were a mighty cruiser and they didnt break at all. The bonus was that they were fitted with this engine ...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Modular_engine

.... which was more than capabale of silly mileage. ;)
