    While training with my new springer spaniel puppy is starting to pay off(kinda), I'm a bit stumped on one aspect. When I take the puppy out to the garden to pee or whatever, when it's time to go in he now takes this as an opportunity to play either hide and seek or catch me if you can. It's all very well using treats, which I do but if the puppy will not come when I call I don't get the opportunity to reward him for coming. There are other situations where he will come when called it's really only when we go outside he does not want to come in and that is not matter how long I stay out there with him. This can be maddening so any advice gratefull.

    iv had this problem before.. would leave her out to do her business then she would go off sniffing and jumping around wanting to play.. so i bought a tracking lead. its 25 meters and about 15 quid and i put it onto her before leaving her out. when i called her if she ignored id give it a little tug and call her while being excited with a treat ready.. great recall practise.

    you must also realise you have a little bundle of pent up energy on your hands

    instead of standing when you call him try bending down on your knees

    having been around springers for years I know for sure they are probably 1 of the most energetic dogs you could have and also asap start to socialise with as many people and dogs as possible

    they can be withdrawn little guys so plenty interaction when ever you get the opportunity

    Spot on advice here OP, and jimf's suggestion to get down low to encourage pup over is also great.
    I'd also add one more bell/whistle. Chances are that pup would rather stay outside because it's soooo interesting out there. Coming back inside may also be a prelude to something he's not so keen on? Maybe you're heading off to work and he knows he'll be alone a while? Something like that?
    So, I'd make a point of making sure that when pup gets back inside, that it's wonderful fun... maybe a little game of fetch, and/or some tasty treats, and/or something to settle down with and enjoy, like a deliciously stuffed Kong Toy.
    You could also encourage pup to seek you out inside, if you bring yourself back inside and start playing with a squeaky toy... how many pups can resist the noise of a squeaky toy?
    These tips will hopefully trump wanting to stay outside!

    Our 5 month old terrier will sometimes ignore a call when she meets something/somebody interesting but will always return on the whistle because she knows I have something for her.

    Slightly off topic - My friend just recently got a springer spaniel....I never knew what a handful they were!!

    I own two dogs but am in awe of any springer spaniel owners....well done to you! :)

    I have them for years and can honestly say they are brilliant in every way especially around kids
