looking up CrossFire it sounds like it's important when it comes to gaming. So stick with the ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3, Sockel 1155, ATX?

Is that optimal for the price? Under hardware feats it says "AMD CrossFireX technology support, AMD Quad CrossFireX technology support, AMD 3-way CrossFireX technology support".

Edit : Sorry to swerve this a little, but Win 7 Pro 64 bit is what i'm looking for, right? and where would i get this cheapest? (I assume paypal/downloading is cheapest?) Is this 86 bit for Windows 8, is the computer i'm building now able for that?

Don't know if having it important, but it's nice to have it.

By the time good single gpu gets outdated, you will have new gen Gpus, which will perform better then old on in crossfire or sli.

Why is it good to have? Well you can come up same gpu on adverts it donedeal.ie. damn, there can be even sale on particular gpu you got. So having extra horse power if you will come by good deal is great. I think it's well worth 10eu extra just to have that option open.

Yes, 64-bit Windows 7. The cheapest place is to get it as a student from software4students.ie or likewise. You can do this as a student or have kids going to school.
If this doesn't apply, it's usually a few euro cheaper for the German version on hardwareversand, if you are buying from there. You can use the German key that you get if you have an English disc (or you can download the disc too and use the key that you buy, I can route out some links or you can search the forums).

x86 refers to the architecture of current desktop processors (as opposed to phones and other devices).
If you see x86-64 in a filename or elsewhere, it's 64-bit for the x86 architecture. If you see x86 on it's own, it's usually a 32-bit application.
You'd want the 64-bit windows which has a few differences but probably most important is the ability to use over 4GB of memory. Yes, this will be compatible with 64-bit windows 8.

The windows 32-bit and 64-bit version have the same license keys, by the way.

Hey guys, I'll be ordering this tomorrow, is there any last minute problems/suggestions u have?

    Total overall cost €792.36
    Total Desktop Cost €629.77 + S&H €30
    8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9 €32.32
    ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3, Sockel 1155, ATX €99.95
    Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155 €197.91
    Sapphire HD6870 1G GDDR5 PCI-E DL-DVI-I+SL-DVI-D / HDMI / DP €149.64
    Raidmax Midi-Tower Sagittarius Silver/Black no PSU €56.96
    Crucial M4 64GB SSD 6,4cm (2,5") €92.99
    Asus VS228H monitor €132.59

Woah, almost all of the components have slightly changed price! All in it was €3 cheaper!

Use my own HDD (2xSATA) [i'll leave the IDE in my old computer]
    PSU (Termaltake TR2-470)
    Ext. DVD-writer
    Speakers
    Keyboard & Mouse

Will i need to buy any cables? Like does the SSD come with a cable or do i need to buy it separately? I have €7 to spend lol. Also, do i need any tools to build this PC? I have a screwdriver, lol. I was hoping it was actually quite simple (open, attach components/cables, turn on)

Also, is Windows 7 the best system for stability/gaming? Or should i be keeping WinXP?

    Thanks guys :)

get an extra SATA cable. its always handy as only jesus knows how many will come with mobo.

you might need a screwdriver, you wont need thermal paste as you are not getting third party cpu cooler.

Cheers mate. Is there a particular sata cables best used for the SSD, like the fastest data rate one?

    satacablesgif.gif

Do i need an anti-static shield or something crazy like that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 120 ✭✭Markd250

Actually, if you're getting the 2500K, an aftermarket cooler will allow you to overclock it more safely/quietly.

Something like the artic cooling freezer pro?
    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=49255&agid=669

It puts you a little over budget though...

i dont think there is any difference at all m8, if they cheap, then get a few. one thing to consider: do you need the under angle or not. my mobo has connection going up, so if i take just strait sata connectors then they get in a way of GPUs.

so some mobos got sata connection going under angle already,

Windows 7 is fine with games and it's a very stable OS. In fact, you'd be losing out on directX 10 & 11 games if you stuck with XP. Worse again is that XP isn't SSD friendly.

Get 7 if you can afford it.

What do u guys make of this? I would like to try overclocking. I'll be using PSU (Termaltake TR2-470). Would this be loud? Worth getting or i'll be alright?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Well 2500k is overclockers dream. Getting it and not ocing it is a sin. If you still got some budget left for aftermarket CPU cooler then get it, thought if money tight, then stick with stock for now.
You still can pc it up to safe 4.0 on stock cooler. To be honest there is nothing there that will max out even stock clock... ( game wise )

Dunno about psu though, I newer came across that brand, but if it can handle that system and 6870 them it has to have room for some light OC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Cheers. I'm worried the PSU i already have won't be up to the task of this new PC...

Here's the specs of the Termaltake TR2-470W

Sorry to go on, looking to order this today :D Is there a way to check wattage required for the pc build?
Do u think 470w would be ok? If not, how about 550w?
    (Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 550W) - €54.94

if you got spare cash, go for new PSU.

remember that PSU might be even most important part of your pc, so newer cheap out on that. if it goes, it can take all of other components with it.

29A on the 12V rails is fairly poor. That's worse than even the 450W amazon. It would probably be enough but it would be no harm to upgrade to a newer, more efficient PSU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

thanks guys, what PSU would u recommend; what wattage would be enough?

I was reading norrie rugger got the 550W (with an i5-2500; z68; Radeon 6850) and it tripped the circuit box; so worried the PSU is inadequate. What do u think of these?

    Super-Flower SF650P14P 650W €42.23

    Super-Flower SF700A14A Gamer Edition 700W (€61.79)

I'm curious about these Kiss Quiet brands, are they reliable? -- but it is on the cheap side, so i'm skeptical
    Kiss Quiet 620W €32.83
    Kiss Quiet 850W €53.32

Would u recommend something else? I would like it to be as quiet as i can get it.

If you want a new PSU get the sf Amazon 550 watt. The other sf aren't good at all.

Thanks man - would it be safer to get the 550w rather than the 650w (for an extra €15)? 550w the one norrie rugger got - i'm worried it won't be enough as we have practically the same build and I don't wanna risk frying the computer.

Should i be getting a processor fan? Like the one Markd250 mentioned
    ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 13 Pro

Funny you should mention that fan, I have it myself and it's a beaut, get it if you want a nice overclock and/or a quiet(er) system. The 550 will run almost every single new graphics card out there including the 7970! Only pulls (the system) under 400 watts at full load.

Edit: Didn't realise Shadowhearth mentioned it a post above, silly me.

Please use exclusively one of these accounts, even if you know further admits of accounts."

Hey guys, been reading up on constructing PCs over the last few days. Have a few Qs -

    1. i'm getting a i5 2500k & a Z68 mobo. Does the monitor cable go into the mobo or graphics card?

    2. I have an external dvd drive, a working (old) PC, and a Win 7 install DVD. What's the best way to install Win 7 on a new, blank SSD for the new PC? (I worry a new computer can't recognise an external DVD-drive without windows so i'll have to use the old PC in some way.)

    3. Can you guys recommend an expansion slot for usbs? Will any do? How about this? Em, would USB 3.0 slots make 2.0 USB external hard drives read/transfer faster?

    Thanks for reading :)

    1. You connect pc in to gpu.

    2. I have no idea how it work to be honest. I know for sure I couldn't install it as win7 did not liked any USB devices plugged in while installing.

    3. It will work faster only if drive USB 3.0 too. If its 2.0 it will work as 2.0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

With Z68 boards you can connect to either, but you should probably connect to the card for better performance. If you connect to the board, you can take advantage of the Lucid Virtu technology which allows you to switch between the onboard and dedicated GPUs. It could be handy for video conversion and power savings, but realistically you don't save a whole lot although it could depend on how you use your system.

You could try installing from a USB flash drive.

What SH says about USB is true. You can't upgrade existing USB ports. They only give you two normally, and possibly an onboard header for more with most motherboards. If you want more USB 3 ports, you have make sure that it's USB 3 expansion ports that you're buying.

You could download a .iso of windows 7, Install via USB then use your product key from your current windows to activate it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,463 ✭✭✭Trevor451

Yeah, its way better to install windows 7 off a flash drive. download a iso off the microsoft website (make sure it matches the version of windows you bought) and then use the windows 7 download tool to mount it to the usb drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Thanks guys. I'm convinced my current/old computer is sentient. It knows I've ordered a new computer - I've lost two hard drives in the last two weeks. One external, one internal; 2.5TB gone :(

the internal sata was grand, then the computer turned itself off for a split second and started reloading windows, secondary SATA not found; won't spin up at all. Tried changing the sata cable and power lead (with a hdd that works - the cables work) and nothing :(

    anything i can do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

With the external one, you could open up the enclosure and connect it to the SATA ports inside the PC, unless it's an older drive. It might void warranty though.

If there's any specific thing that could be causing problems like a dying PSU, it might be worth your while to wait until you have the new PC in your hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Cheers, i'll put the kaput HDD in the new comp; hopefully; but i think it's brown bread. Sigh! Hey, do i need to buy thermal paste separately when building a pc? Does it not come with the processor/processor fans?

HWVS money cleared with this this morning; hope they send it off 2n/2m morn :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Yeah, you do get some if you ordered a separate heatsink or you get a thermal pad sort of thing or stuff already on the heatsink if you go with the stock Intel one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Would it be worth putting my sb live sound card in the new CPU with the z68 mobo in? Like which would sound better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Sound quality has increased over the years for integrated cards and is enough for most people. Dedicated cards are certainly better if you have a keen ear or are doing professional work.

If the card is a bit older there may be very little difference in quality and you should give the onboard sound a go. If you're not happy with the quality, switch in your old card. It's handy to have a spare in case something wrong happens down the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

thanks mono that's exactly what i'll do.

I'm getting ancy about building a pc from scratch - i've never done it, only added in HDDs and DVD-Drives etc. Have you guys any advice so I don't fry the components? Like really basic simple stuff i might overlook?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Some mistakes that new builders make come to mind...

Don't connect the USB connector to the firewire header on the board or vice versa. They look the same.

Make sure that you put the brass standoffs for the motherboard in before the motherboard itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Serephucus

    Monotype wrote: »

Guilty. Fried a mouse on my first build. (In my defense, the paper manual was wrong, website was right).

Make absolutely sure which way round your CPU is, and that it's going in the socket correctly. Attempt to close the latch on an improperly seated chip and you'll ruin it. (not likely to happen, just don't rush this bit)

Yes, RAM modules do need that much force. No, you won't break them. (I was really surprised by this)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Poor mouse. :( Yeah, good point about RAM. Sometimes expansion cards need a bit of force too. It can be a little awful to get them out on occasion.

When following guides, beware of generalisations like putting two sticks of RAM into one colour or pressing a certain key for the BIOS. They vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so RTFM is advisable on top of any guide. :)

    (New monitor not pictured!)

Edit : I think I need a 2.5" -> 3.5" bay adapter for the SSD. I'll have to head into town tomorrow. Maplins? What should I ask for, would this do the trick? I don't see how it holds the SSD

...do you think it'd be ok if I just put the 2.5" SSD in the 3.5" bay and connected it for the day - pick up the adapter tomorrow, or will that overheat/damage it?

Technically, yes, but SSDs don't really to be mounted anywhere. I have mine tucked under my bottom hard drive cage, and before that it was hanging from the SATA cable. Lots of people velcro them to the back of the motherboard tray (which I'll probably do next time I re-wire the case).

I have mine hanging using some elastic like this:

    Does the job!:D

Hey guys, putting it together is going pretty slow since I've never done it before. But managed to attach the mobo + processor + heat sink, the graphics card and PSU. But the main problem is attaching the wiring from the PSU and the case. Could you please help me out?

I uploaded photos with descriptions to my facebook. (You'll need a FB account to see I think)

If you can't, i'll upload pics & description here.

These are all PSU Cables. Can you tell me what number they connect to?

    2 x 4-pronged blue wires labelled CP and U1

3 red daisy-chained wires, PC1 Express (6 prongs) SLI ready (6 prongs) and then a 2 pronged one

3 black daisy-chained 4-prong power leads and at the end of those, 1 small 4-pronged wire

    4 black 4 daisy-chained sata cables

4 cables daisy-chained - sata to sata to molex power to molex power

    power cable 20+ and 4P

from front of chassis, USB, HD audio and AC97

from front of chassis, Green = Reset SW, Red = HDD LED, Orange = Power Switch, Blue = 2 pronged power

Chassis Exhaust - Power cables (in and out)

Thanks so much for any help you can provide. Kind of at an impasse here :(
