Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. he was decent if not excellent for me, and i thought he rushed/made the wrong decision with that last chance

I missed the portugal v Germany game, caught the full time analysis and the lads in the rte studio seemed to give nani and ronaldo a bit of a roasting, going by what they said you'd swear they were awful.

On twitter People are going over board on messi's performance in a frendily game vs ronaldos against a strong German team in the euros where there's a lot of pressure.

I feel sorry for ronaldo, as soon as he has a quiet game and doesnt score he attracts a lot of critism at least from the likes of the lads at rte who clearly don't rate him which is pathetic as he is obviously the only thing close to messi and tbh IMO there's not much between the 2, but messi seems to be given a pass when he has a quiet game where as ronaldo doesn't but anyway nani seems to be hated similar to ronaldo by the likes of dunphy ! It actually annoys the life out of me.

Lewandowski isn't a particularly pacey forward, but he has an innate ability to get on the end of moves, be in the right place at the right time.

Now, in the modern game, that means keeping up with play, being integral early in a move and then moving on quickly to finish it, so he can work well with the "in the hole" or "trequartista" player, the midfielders and link properly with the inside or outside forwards and be there to finish off moves.

He'd work well with Rooney and Kagawa, but play a subty dofferent role with each.

Would be a decent signing for United, but not a priority at the moment.

    Sort another midfielder first.

    Where would he play tho?

Assuming our new top formation will be:

    Rooney

    Valencia
    Kagawa
    Nani

Substitute? On the Wing? Play two up top and have one winger?

    4-1-3-2

Be more likely a variation of a 4-3-1-2 I'd say.

    Wouldn't be ideal though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

no wide men? Ferguson doesn't play with no wide men.

Fergie play 1 CM? No way imo.

    We won't sign him anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

Thats why I said wouldn't be ideal :)

Would be playing Val and Nani/Young in a more withdrawn role, giving width in possession, tightening up without it, Val would be fine I'm sure, but wouldn't be as confident on the other side.

    eg

    ---Carrick---
    Val Nani
    Kag
    Lew
    Rooney

    xmass tree maybe?

    Val---Carrick---Nani
    ----Kag----Roon---
    Lew

Don't think anything there is ideal though

The only system that I think he would be going with Lew is with Kag on the left, Rooney just behind Lew and Val or Nani on the right

Id rather not sign him and get the midfielder we really need to get instead.

Maybe in FIFA 12 if you're desperate for a goal.

Phil Jones behind Carrick in that formation would be like a boss tbh.

Duncan Edwardsing it all over the place

Certainly offended Keno 92 anyway. :pac:

Seriously though, £50 million spent last summer, money already being spent this summer.

If we don't sign "that" midfielder this summer I think I'll have a little cry.

How good is Powell who we've apparently closed in on signing?

We've been ''closing in'' on him for around 3 weeks at this stage :pac:

He's a talented 18 year old forward thinking midfielder that has potential. Difficult to judge how good he actually is at the moment as he's been playing his football in league two.

looks like he has lots of potential, will be a better bet to make it than our last couple of punts.. e.g. Bebe and Obertan..

If there's no room for Berbatov in the team due to a change in the way we play then there's no chance we will be looking at Lewandowski.

Lewandowski is not considered fast.It would be a weakness in his game imo but his positioning and finishing make up for it.

    Nope, Welbeck is quicker.

I've only seen him play a few times and from what I saw I didn't think he lacked pace at all. He's not a speed demon or anything, but he's quick enough, very agile and is a strong runner. He would suit our system far more than Berbatov anyway because he plays off the last shoulder, Berba doesn't.

But I'd agree with others in that I don't really see the need for him when we have Welbeck, Hernandez, Rooney and Kagawa already, as ideally only 2 of those should play together at one time unless Fergie plans to change one of their positions.

I see Benzema has come out and said United have tried to sign him for each of the last 3 or 4 seasons. He has really come on in the last couple of seasons with Real. Would have liked to see him sign when he left Lyon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

Lewandowski is no slouch, I have seen him play a few times now and although he is no Tony Valencia he is hardly Per Mertesacker!

As keeps being said, unless someone is being shipped out I really don't see a need for him and would prefer the money go elsewhere, though I should again point out that I don't actually believe he will be joining anyway

    Where did he say that?

We did try sign him sure, he choose Madrid, I thought it was the wrong decision but he has really come on under JM so would obviously be open to the possibility of him joining, don't ever actually see it happening though and don't believe United have really tried to sign him the last 3 out of 4 seasons, all these French lads love to talk don't they!

I do think we could be in for him though, even though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in my mind.

The fact that his agent came out and said we were interested a few weeks ago along with the rumours of an Arsenal executive stating off the record that we enquired about RVP, it sounds like we could be in for a high quality striker.

I seen it on the Sky Sports twitter feed. Presume it's on their website too. Like everything else, whether the quotes are accurate or not is another thing.

Says on their site that the quotes come from The Sun so probably not a whole lot of truth behind it.

We tried to sign him that summer and the following January when the Madrid move didn't seem to be working. After that, there's no confirmation either way.

Yeah I read it myself there (the Benzema thing) he says we tried to sign him the last 3 or 4 years!

    Mad if true.

Surely he would only know if Madrid were considering accepting our offer and asked was he interested, because if we spoke to him directly would that not be classed as tapping up?

you can't tap up players in other countries, only domestically. it is no ggood behavior, but there is nothing illegal with it as Uefa don't have rules set down for it, so there are no rules broken.

That's something I never knew, so it's something that would be frowned upon rather than being against the rules? Any reason why it's just the PL that enforce this rule?

I don't trust Jones yet fully as a centre back.
I think he could make a great DCM though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,509 ✭✭✭VW 1

I don't know yet if Jones is best as a centre back right back or midfielder, i do think we will look back and say what we paid was a bargain for the footballer we got.
