Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Picture the scene. You're the president of a major superpower, suddenly all your screens start flashing at once. There's a barrage of intercontinental nuclear missiles heading towards your country from your rival superpower.

These are all independent detection systems, so there's no doubt about it, you and your country is about to be annihalated. You have only a brief moment to make your decision. Do you strike back?

You are the president of a superpower. You have done something to piss off another superpower to such an extent that they are willing to wipe out the human race just to get back at you.

You are obviously a stubborn cock.

You are obviously gonna push the button!.

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov (Russian: Станислав Евграфович Петров; born c. 1939) is a retired lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who deviated from standard Soviet protocol by correctly identifying a missile attack warning as a false alarm on September 26, 1983.[1] This decision may have prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its Western allies. Investigation of the satellite warning system later confirmed that the system had malfunctioned.

    cheers mate

Happen to Borris Yeltsin in 1995 , he picked no.

The incident started when a team of Norwegian and American scientists launched a Black Brant XII four-stage sounding rocket from the Andøya Rocket Range off the northwest coast of Norway
As the rocket climbed, it was detected by the Olenegorsk early warning radar station in Russia. To the radar operators, the rocket appeared similar in speed and flight pattern to a U.S. submarine-launched Trident missile, leading the Russian military to initially misinterpret the rocket's trajectory as representing the precursor to a possible attack by missiles from submarines.
This event resulted in a full alert being passed up through the military chain of command all the way to President Boris Yeltsin, who was notified immediately and the "nuclear briefcase" (known in Russia as Cheget) used to authorize nuclear launch was automatically activated. It is reported that President Boris Yeltsin activated his "nuclear keys" for the first time in his tenure. No warning was issued to the Russian populace of any incident; it was reported in the news a week afterward.
Russian doctrine reportedly allowed Yeltsin ten minutes from the time of detection to decide on a course of action. Russian observers were quickly able to determine that the rocket was heading away from Russian airspace and was not a threat. Reports differ greatly as to whether or not Yeltsin came close to authorizing an attack, but the general consensus is that Yeltsin was able to conclude that there was no basis for attack, and therefore no danger. The rocket fell to earth as planned.

Personally I wouldn't. I've nothing to gain from it, and it'd just cause more human suffering.

    But don't tell them that.

    '' We'll fight them on the beachs '' ....

What ...you mean there will be no beaches left to fight on ?

If time allowed , I would try change the trajectory of my missiles so as to collide with the incoming ones in the hope that it would lessen the the % of population killed but with only minutes to make a decision that's not going to be easy .

I watched a doco "Countdown to zero" about the world nuclear arsenal and you have no idea how many times it nearly happened.

But the closest was 1986 the Norwegians informed the Russians they were launching a rocket to study the northern lights but the message never got passed on.

So the alerts all lit up and Yeltsin was given the football to launch a counterstrike but he refused.

And then the general telling the story gave the quote of all time.

"He wasn't drunk at that time"

Nah. What's the point if I'm not going to live to see the results?

The whole Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) business really made world leaders wonder what the whole point of war was. If Russia had carpet-nuked the USA, or vice versa ... what then? The land would be radioactive for centuries, no use to the victors. It re-opened the question of what a "win" would mean. Shouldn't a "win" be worth something to the winner?

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

Thought the closest was 1962 (Cuban Missile Crisis) Followed by 1983 (Able Archer)

Nope, if my (and my countries) demise is imminent and inevitable then what is the point of inflicting more destruction and death on the world?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,801 ✭✭✭✭Kojak

I'd press the * button, followed by the # button, 07 and then press # again.

    That would work..

That's what the enemy is counting on,they've done their homework on the way you think.
They attack and you do nothing-they win,you lose.
They attack and you launch everything you've got, they lose, you lose.
In the above scenario you lose every time while they win 50%% of the time.
Now, if you should attack them you have a 50% chance of winning-but of course they know that, and will launch everything anyway.
There is a reason it's called mutually assured destruction.

If one superpower were to set off enough weapons to anhilate a rival superpower this and this would ensure that ultimately everyone would lose.

Theres almost a humanitarian case under such circumstances for firing off everything one has got to spare as many people as possible life in the aftermath.
