    Hi All,

I recently visited my dentist and was given the delightful news that I would need an implant that could cost up to 1200 yo yo.
I know a lot of people travel to the North for dental treatment as it can be substantially cheaper.
Can anyone recommend any good dental practices in say around Newry or the surrounding area that would do Dental implants.

    Thanks

    Kevin

I'm going to move this to Dental Issues, because its more appropriate. Though recommendations are not allowed in thread.

I think you need to do a bit more research op. €1200 is actually a ridiculously low price for an implant and crown. Most clinics charge twice this North and South.

Very little difference north and south with price these days. Cheap dentists in the north are the same a cheap dentists in the south and expensive northern dentists are the same as expensive southern dentists. By the time you factor in currency exchange, fuel and time off work your generally not saving anything at all and wasting a whole bunch of you time.

Personally I do not think that tendering implant dentistry (or any dentistry for that matter) is best done to the lowest bidder. This is a artificial screw inserted into you skull, there are significant complications and failure rates.

Also there are two parts to an implant, the insertion of the implant and the restoration of it with a crown. Make sure the price in inclusive of both parts.

Hey, I disagree with you. From the prices I have checked.. there is a remarkable difference. I need about 8 crowns and I was quoted 1,000 per crown in Galway.. with a discount of 10% .. and they wouldn't even through in whitening or polish. In the north the prices show for the same expensive crowns .. 400 is the average price - sterling. But the difference is huge.

Who said that they were the same expensive crowns??

Because they use the same materials :D And even if not the exact same .. it's still over half cheaper up there. No contest for me..

Hi can anyone recommend a brilliant dentist up north? Enniskillen preferably but wherever as long as they're good. I need loads of crowns so good, honest wrk is imperative, thanks in advance. :)

The raw material is a small part of it, ceramic is essentially sand quartz... glass.... It's the time the technician spends plus any expensive materials such as gold etc that matters. At 400 sterling a crown they can't be paying their lab much to make it and that would worry me. The planning preparation and fitting of the crowns is very important but the quality of the crowns is just as important.
It won't be the same end result. If you want to pay less that is fine and is a personal choice but do so in the knowledge that the end result is not the same***

*** I have no idea who you are seeing and what quality if work they do. All I can say is the guy I work with pays his lab top dollar for his crowns, charges his patients accordingly and gets consistently good results....

Well all of the places I have looked are no more expensive than 500 eur.. and I looked at many and I don't have 8k to spend on my teeth. Thanks but I'll be heading north, 1,000 on a tooth is far too much to spend on a tooth. Hey at least I'm not going to Eastern Europe eh?

It is of course your choice. 8 crowns... Is it out of functional necessity or cosmetic want?
Most cosmetic surgeons would argue that no treatment is better that a cheaper job...

The treatment is necessary unfortunately. I intend to get good treatment, but spending 1,000 per tooth is unnecessary, thanks for your advice.

Yeah high end dental work is expensive and time consuming. When it come to crowns you really get out what time and effort you put in, however nit everyone can afford the top end. Thing get tricky at the low end as time spent doing the job and the quality of the lab work vary drastically ( btw the material the crowns are made form is not the differienting factor in quality, it's who makes them. Like a painting it's who paints it not the brand of paint). If you are the low end make sure you see some pictures of results as these cheapo crown can be hideous and poorly fitting. Remember you will have 8 of them.if you intend to get good treatment don't expect that at very low price, good luck

Thanks for the advice but again, I didnt say I was going to get 'CHEAPO' CROWNS.. I think I established that at the beginning.. but again thanks for the advice.. no cheapo for me.. just not extortionate prices. Thank you.. whos to say dentists in the north cant provide really goo quality as ones down the south?

Good crown in the north = good crown in the south = same price
Bad crown in north = bad crown in the south = same price
Good dentist do good crown and charge for their time regardless of their location. Unfortunately you will only see my point after the fact. I can buy a empress crown for 50€ or for 550€ form a lab, quality varies drastically for the same crown. I can spend 20 minutes doing a crown or 3 hours results vary proportionally

All crowns are not the same, all dentist are not equally skilled or motivated, prices vary.

Thank you, I understand all of this. So you are saying the more expensive the crown the better it is? Because there is no way of knowing what a 'good crown' is, as you put it or a 'bad crown' until it's done.

I'm fully aware prices vary, dentist's skills vary, I'm not new to this.

I was recommended a respected dental practice in the North by a few friends and was wondering how their prices for Crowns were considerably cheaper than dental practices in the south.

I emailed them and asked if the Porcelain bonded crown they sold was a good quality crown ,as it seemed cheap compared to the costs I had been quoted in the Republic.

    Answer:
The standard porcelain bonded crown is a quality bespoke crown with excellent aesthetics and lifespan. It is exactly the same and probably produced in the same laboratories as those you will have seen quoted in other dentists websites. We only use UK/Irish certified labs.

Make of that what you will.

so you're saying that crowns are the same north and south ... according to him? Like what I said? I was just a bit confused there..

As above , I can order a Empress crown from a lab for €50 or I can get one for ten times that from a different lab. Dentists concepts of quality vary, one dentist acceptable is another unacceptable. If depends on the dentist individual ethos and the level their practice is pitched at. The trick is to find a dentist that shares you concept of quality and aesthetics. Of course a dentist is not going to state that their standard of care (although usually satisfactory) is inferior in any way.

Ask to see photos of completed cases this serves three purposes.
    1. A good dentists doing ceramic work will routinely be taking photos and lots of them.
    2. It shows you the standard they find acceptable.
    3. It lets the dentist know your level of aesthetic demand.

I can guarantee that any dentist offering a 400 euro crown is not using the same laboratory as a dentist doing high class ceramic work, unless the dentist like to work at a loss.

Weather your after superior quality is completely up to you, just trying to give you the info to make an informed decision and compare apples to apples.

Below are 2 sets of front crowns, all teeth are crowns. Both by dentist whoclaim to be cosmetic specialists. Both claimed to be superior quality. Both made of the same materials. Which one would you want in your mouth.

It's very hard for Joe Bloggs to work out what's best though. Two dentists might be using the same lab for the same type crown but charging different amounts for their own labour input to fit the crown. Below are the fees for crowns for two dentists that are in easy reach of me :

    Dentist 1

    Crown (depending on type) €580 - €750

    CEREC Empress crown €580

    CEREC Emax crown €680

    Dentist 2

Aesthetic porcelain crown *New* From € 550

Advanced White (all ceramic) Crown € 600

Is the €680 crown with dentist 1 better than the €600 crown with dentist2 or is it the same crown but the second dentist charges less for his time? Both dentists have lovely before and after pictures on their websites - genuinely wouldn't be able to tell the difference in quality.

Indeed very difficult to know. The reality is that for crowns the quality of the second picture above you looking north of 1000 euro. If you think the crowns look good in the photos then that's a good indication. At the 5-6 hundred euro mark you not dealing with super high end, as honestly the dentist would be making a loss.

Be sure the crowns in the photos are the same ones that have the low cost. Make sure they are the dentists own photographs. Only one of those dentists you mentioned has pictures on their website,

At the end of the day it depends on what your after and what you can afford. At the moment there is a dentist for patient of every expectation and budget from cheap and serviceable to expensive super high.

My point is that people tend to assume that a crown from and expensive dentists is a rip off because google says you can get it for less elsewhere, unfortunately this is not the case and crown A does not necessarily equal crown B. People also make assumption because they have looked on 20 dentists websites that they are now expert to advise people. Its a mine field.
