Synopsis: The men are scarce. The women are taking over the city. This is not 2011. It’s 1942. Hitler’s bombed out most of Britain’s munitions plants and the North American allies have to step in to build lean and mean bomb making factories with women at the helm. Spotlighting today’s sexuality, conventions and politics through the lens of another time, the series’riveting soap stories are set in a fascinating historical context and track the truth of how the women carve out their new found freedoms. While their freedom offers thrills, it comes with the price of possible mistakes, greater responsibility and danger. With social restrictions still ruling the day, many of their battles and stories are launched in secrecy and achieved through bold maneuvers.

Will check it out. Will be interesting to see how Jewel gets on in this. We (madmammy & I) named one of our kids after a co-actor from Serenity/Firefly.
(Met Jewel Staite a number of times, lovely woman and very nice to chat to.)
She asking people at the moment about good places to eat up there.

Hey guys, the contents of the above post are completely untrue.

We haven't actually cast anyone for the show just yet, we're still in prep. Also, we haven't contacted Jewel Staite or anyone else in that list, it's just a rumor that somehow got started on SpoilerTV.

In fact, now that we've corrected the folks at SpoilerTV, the post has been taken down, and miss Staite herself tweeted that it was a rumor.

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/08/bomb-girls-casting-and-production.html

Today Shaw Media announced casting and production details for Global Television’s original drama series, Bomb Girls. Starring Oscar® nominated actress Meg Tilly (Agnes of God, The Big Chill), the series begins production in Toronto on September 12 and runs through November 16, 2011. Commissioned by Shaw Media’s original content team and produced by Muse Entertainment/Back Alley Films, the six-part, one-hour series is scheduled to premiere on Global in January 2012.

Set in the 1940s, Bomb Girls tells the remarkable stories of the women who risked their lives in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied forces fighting on the European front. The series delves into the lives of these exceptional women from all walks of life – peers, friends and rivals – who find themselves thrust into new worlds and changed profoundly as they are liberated from their home and social restrictions.

“Bomb Girls is rich with historical significance, stemming from the efforts of Canadian women during the Second World War, and we are proud to spotlight the groundbreaking bravery of these unsung heroes through this new Global original,” said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice-President, Content, Shaw Media. “With its fresh-faced cast, seasoned production team, intriguing storylines and unflappable characters, this six-part series is a dynamic addition to our midseason slate.”

Bomb Girls stars Meg Tilly as Lorna, a supervisor at the munitions factory with two sons on the front; Jodi Balfour (The Sinking of the Laconia) as Gladys, a wealthy socialite who becomes a bomb girl despite her parents’ disapproval; Charlotte Hegele (Murdoch Mysteries) as Kate, a preacher’s daughter with a golden voice who’s running from her fundamentalist father; Ali Liebert (Hellcats) as Betty, a fast-talking girl from the Prairies responsible for training the bomb girls; Anastasia Philips (Skins) as Vera, whose life is forever changed by her work on the assembly line; Lisa Norton (72 Hours: True Crime) as Edith, a forlorn mother of two youngsters; and Antonio Cupo (L’Ombra del destino) as Marco, an Italian-born factory worker who is banned from the army because of his ethnic background.

“We’re stepping away from the familiar romantic notions of the ’40s to instead explore the astonishing and little-known truths about the home front,” said co-creator Michael MacLennan (Flashpoint, Queer as Folk). Further to this, co-creator Adrienne Mitchell (Durham County, Bliss) added, “When an explosive could blast in your face today, when your overseas lover could be shot dead tomorrow, when you’re not sure if the free world will be standing next month, you play your cards however you want — and you don’t play by the old rules.”

Produced by Muse Entertainment (The Kennedys) and Back Alley Films (Durham County), executive producers include Michael MacLennan, Michael Prupas(Muse Entertainment), Janis Lundman (Back Alley Films) and Adrienne Mitchell (Back Alley Films). Adrienne Mitchell is also the co-showrunner along with Michael MacLennan, who serves as the series’ head writer. Bomb Girls will be directed by Adrienne Mitchell, Ken Girotti (Rescue Me, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and Anne Wheeler (Da Vinci’s Inquest, Cra$h and Burn).

This kinda looks interesting, but....could it be another Pan Am?...all style with little character/substance?

    Worth a look anyways :)

Synopsis for the first 3 eps.
    EPISODE 101
    “Jumping Tracks”
Logline: When rich-girl Gladys Witham takes an office job at Victory Munitions, she discovers a new world — a fascinating sisterhood and a cause that she hopes may change her life.

It’s 1941 and Canadian men are at war, leaving their wives, daughters and sweethearts to replace them in the bomb factories. Rich young socialite Gladys Witham yearns to do her part by joining Victory Munitions’ secretarial pool. Orbiting this new working-class world, Gladys meets the gals of Blue Shift, including Betty, a tough farm-girl; newbie Kate, who’s running from a violent past; and the glamorous Vera. Governing them all is Lorna, their formidable shift matron whose stern exterior masks a conflicted soul. Enjoying the taste of her new life, Gladys embarks on a brave and foolhardy venture to secretly defy her family and join these girls. Can the “Princess” snag a job working the dangerous factory line?

    EPISODE 102
    “Misfires”
Logline: The women at Victory Munitions must band together when the blame for an accidental explosion is laid at their feet.

Gladys works hard to juggle her double life racing between the factory-floor and attending high-society parties, when an unforeseen tragedy divides the factory. A faulty test-bomb sends a worker to the
hospital with serious injuries. Men are quick to blame the Blue Shift women and factory manager Harold needs a scapegoat. Determined to clear the girls, Lorna and Marco conduct their own investigations, while Kate scrambles to protect her false identity. Given her outsider status, can Gladys galvanize the women to stand up for their rights?

    EPISODE 103
    “How You Trust”
Logline: A surprise inspection puts VicMu employees under the gun giving Lorna an opportunity to finally rid the factory of Marco, and Gladys must defend herself against a thief to prove Kate’s innocence.

A surprise inspection throws Victory Munitions into a frenzy. Determined to prove themselves, the girls band together. Lorna uses the opportunity to incriminate Marco and Kate finds herself as the prime
suspect in a raft of thefts. Exiled to the storeroom, Kate meets a man who shows her a thrilling new world of music. Singled out as the thief’s target, Gladys lays a trap that nets a shocking secret

Just on the 5th episode...and I really like it! I have to admit that I do love it for the style but it's a lot better than Pan Am IMO. I couldn't get into Pan Am even with all the amazing clothes and hairstyles!!

Not the best show in the world but good entertainment none the less!!

I started watching this the day before the cancellation was announced. Gutted to say the least, but God bless Canada all the same.
Holding out for that movie. I need Betty and Kate together.
