Stan, I want to thank you for posting these great photos of the city.

I am an American, and have visited Limerick 2 times. First time in 2005, second in 2009.

I randomly travelled to Limerick in 2005 to see Ireland for the first time. Since then I have made many good friends there. I sit at work here in the USA, and look at these pictures, and want so badly to be walking the streets of Limerick with my friends, stopping in at Nancy's for a pint, etc.

Your photos bring back that feeling of visiting for the first time for me.
Keep em coming. Thank you so very much.
    Cheers,
    Skottoman

    And I'm a Pole. :D

Wow. Thank you for such nice words. That is why I have the energy to continue shooting. I'm very pleased "Skottoman.

    Thank you my friend.

That's a very serious beer! Thanks!
Oh, and one of my best friends there is Polish too!

Whenever I stayed there I stayed at the Pery's next to Tait's clock. I've walked most of the downtown area, and love to see your candid photos of the streets I enjoyed visiting. I will return again soon!

    Cheers,
    Skottoman

good man skottoman, nice to hear comments like this, out of interest..did you notice much of a change when you came back for your second visit?

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 Skottoman

Actually Dave, I did notice a difference.

Mostly at the end of Catherine street. Across the street from O'Raidas where I ung out a lot the first time in '05. There seemed to be more highrise buildings/condos near the river also...

Limerick has been very friendly to me, and I shall return again I'm sure.
    Cheers,
    Skottoman

This is not a "mix" because it's impossible. But I wanted to show you an old photo.

Do you have a date for that pic?

I wonder is that when Todds burned down years ago and had to be rebuilt? Would have been well before my time, but maybe someone here was around back then or knows more about it?

Before my time too, but I heard plenty from the folks about the Todds fire. It was a big thing understandably for Limerick people, and was actually a minor world news story. Tenders came from all over to fight the blaze.

In the background, you can recognise Roches Stores, which only changed to Debenhams relatively recently. What is now Penney's clock was Cannock's Dept Store at the time. Saxone shoe shop I actually rem myself (born 1975!), so they also lasted a while. I have a vague childhood memory of Cannocks in the late 70s and their chiming clock.

Todds fire was in 1959 I think. (Before my time too)

    But I do remember Saxone.

Wow cant believe Saxone shoes was there all the way back then.
Anyone remember when the corner building where Saxone was
collapsed ? The building just kinda neatly collapsed and the wall Easons
shared was left perfectly intact, also rebuilt.

The Henry Cecil also had trouble too I think.

Roches Stores and Saxone I remember as we used to come across to Limerick most summers from Liverpool. So places like Cruises Hotel, Woolworths on O'Connell Street (which then became the O'Connell Mall, I think, with Tony's Music scene inside of it), Arthur's Quay car park (which seemed to flood a lot), the knocking of Ranks, and the building of Shannon bridge etc are all within my living memory of Limerick.

Why did Penneys change the clock?? The old one is much better!!

Didn't the the top of the clock get blown off in a storm around Christmas '95? That could be why it's changed.

As a Kid if I needed to go to the Loo my parents
would bring me into Cruises Hotel to use the loo there.
It was the first time I saw a dude employed to stand
in the bathroom giving out towels etc.

Woolworths I loved woolworths, There was big strong doors at
the entrance that were very difficult to open as a child. I even remember
seeing Ladies struggle to get the doors open.
