I can get them in but at nowhere near that price. I think those sellers are selling off the stock by the look of that price.

Any idea on a price ? Wont hold you to it but just a rough price :D

It would be greater than 120 eur.

    I have seen a deal on a NZ mheg5/mpeg 4 dtt receiver.
It was 106 euros all in with delivery.
But didn't go for it out of uncertainty of compatibiliy.
It was the Extra terrestrial model.

Go for it. Of course it will work. Has the profile level for here. The only diffrence between the MHEG5 profile and the UK level is the inclusion of a language set for Maori. I tested a Zinwell from NZ, worked, didnt like it mind you.

That deal on the XT - incl delivery is an ebay second hand or a general offer ? Seems to be very good including delivery.

Then email them asking them for airmail postage prices.
They may initially quote all sorts of priority shipping costs, just email back and say you want the cheapest option.
When I did the maths not so long ago, it was 106 euros delivered.
MPEG4/MHEG 5 should be sweet as a nut for DTT.

I received my eXtra terrestrial receiver today from Freeview shop in New Zealand, I spoke to lars on the phone there and he was quite helpful and informative and has sold a few to Ireland already he informed me.

    It cost me:

€147.13 to the seller in NZ (NZ$330)
€15.85 for the Bank of Ireland cost of International Bank Transfer
€31.16 VAT to customs collected by An Post this morning
    €194.14 = Grand total

I was pretty p'd about having to pay the VAT as I thought I may get away with it:mad:

Anyway down to Business, The receiver is a nice size and works very well with the tests, it is MPEG4 so no problems there and also MHEG5 so it gives me a now and next EPG and full digital RTÉ Aertel, the it has four outputs including S-Video, Composite, Component, and HDMI. I used Composite today as my portable TV has composite input and for another one I used my Xbox 360 Composite-Scart Adapter.

I connected it to my tv cable which is connected to a UHF and VHF Aerial in my attic which are fed down via the mast head amp and powersupply. It picked up no signal at all with the power to the amplifier turned off. When I powered up my amplifier it found the the four radio and tv channels immediately. Signal strength was ok but quality was very low and the image was stable and fully pixalated and totally unwatchable. I was afraid this may happen as my UHF antenna was realigned from Mullaghanish to the local RTÉ Relay transmitter at Morley's Bridge, Gort in Kilgarvan. Most antennas in my area were adjusted to this relay by engineers from Dublin paid for by both RTÉ and the developers of the Windfarms which were defracting the Analog signal from Mullaghanish to begin with. A tv Licence strike in the area and the formation of a committee of which I was a member saw this new Relay being established.

So not to be deterred by my lack of Signal at my own house I then swiftly moved to my other property closeby which is located far higher up and at around 1000ft above sea level has been a hub of television in the areas for decades as it receives an excellent clear signal in from Mullaghanish in over the Derrynasaggart and Shehy Mountains and received a perfect Analog reception up until the aerials began degrading when the property became idle.

My new receiver picked up the signal instantly having it tuned in from previous and I received RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2 & TG4 perfectly with TV3 and RTENL Test channel also available but not broadcasting instead giving the the red test screen. It also received all radio channels.

    My channel line up today.
    RTE1 ch 800
    RTE2 ch 801
    TV3 ch 802
    TG4 ch 803
    RTÉNL Test ch 804
    Radio 1 ch 805
    2FM ch 806
    Lyric 807
    RNAG 808

All in I am very pleased to have eventually received the tests and am very pleased with my new receiver even if it did up being costly. The receiver also has an 8 day EPG but I am not sure if this is tailored especially for the NZ Freeview HD service or maybe RTÉ were not broadcasting a full EPG today as all I was receiving was now and next. It goes up to 1080i and the DTT quality today was excellent although I was only watching on a 14" Lidl DVD combi portable so I the real test would be a 50" plasma:eek:.

These are the pictures of my receiver and reception today.

Very nice...bit pricey though for a DTT only box. They will be much cheaper than this by June/July even with MHEG5.

where did you see that for 77 euro Snaps?

on an aside - is there any word on when RTE will make available their set top box which I presume they will have to eventually?

I dont think RTE will ever release a STB. That is not the business they are in.

RTE don't sell TVs, VHS, Sat boxes etc.

Why would they sell a DTT box?

    Argos, Dunnes, Tesco sell stuff.

I see that the Extra Terrestrial receiver is now at NZ$ 199 or 88 Euros,
    http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/extra-terrestrial-digital-terrestrial-receiver-freeview-p-497.html

Can anyone confirm if this receiver will also pick up the Freeview channels up North. I want it for use in the border region to pick up both DTT from South and Freeview from North ..

I see from the specs that it has MPEG-2 decoder

    Video decoding MPEG-2 SD/HD (MP@ML and MP@HL), MPEG-4 H.264/AVC SD/HD (Main Profile
Level 3 and High Profile Level 4)

Is this all that is required ?

    Thanks ..

Anything that receives Irish DTT will also do UK Freeview.

However we don't have a DTT service. I'd hold off till there are some Government launch

The "mheg 5" is nothing to do with the epg, it's for fancy things like digital text.

ive been given a dvb terrestial, starview receiver, could i use this with a uhf digital aerial to pick up tv signals in dublin.not sure about mpeg on this receiver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

its a DVB C box not DVB T.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Some are DVB-t/DTT.

In either case, no, it won't do MPEG4.

It's best sent to the recycling centre.

Not 100% true. MHEG5 can be used for extended EPG.
Freesat uses MHEG5 to do extended EPG. But it's extra SW on top of MHEG5.

It probably would but it only supports MPEG4 standard definition and would be useless for any future HD transmissions - although they may be some time off. No mention of MHEG5 either, so no digital teletext.

It would be ok as a 2nd box for the bedroom or kids playroom etc. Damned cheap too compared to the €196 I paid to import a HD fully spec'd box from New Zealand.

Their sat dish is too small for Ireland, though OK for London. I wonder is their location "really" Ireland?

He only has the overpriced sat gear with the London Sized dish.

I think i will stay away from that seller.
Just might get a metabox combo instead.

The local TV shop in Mitchelstown has displayed on their window since yesterday, a Triax TR 500 Mpeg 4 HD DTT set top box priced at €160. It would appear to do Mpeg4 Irish Dtt with epg, but I'm not sure about Mheg5 for digital text etc. Does anybody know any more about these boxes and their capabilities ?
