Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I wonder will he be slaughtering some poor Clare farmers sheep for dinner..

That was probably the rack of lamb he had while staying at Dromoland Castle:rolleyes:

They should have dropped him into Temple Bar in only his underwear and a rangers jersey with €2 and a copy of the Big Issue. That would have been worth watching.

Whats the story with that sheep he found. Should there not have been a tag on its ear? or are they removed when found dead?

ROFL!! WHAT? I was takin' the piss with my last comment! Don't tell me he ate a sheep!
Brilliant! I love Bear Grylls. Fake or not, the guys an entertainment legend!
I love the way he dramatises everything he eats and lets it wiggle on his face... lol. I have a man crush on bear grylls.
He came across a dead sheep that had seemingly gotten stuck in the bog or something and stipped off to jump into a muddy patch to pull it out for food. He ate some of the heart raw and made a "sheeping" bag out of the fleece.
I was just waiting for a thick farmer with a shot gun to come running over the hills after him to get his sheep back.

He got permission from the farmer first. I can't remember the location where that was, but sure it'll run again on discovery at some stage.

Is this show supposed to be real or contrived fun or what's the story?I know the area around Slieve League quite well so...
First of all he climbs up some cliffs then he says he'll follow the coast south and yet somehow he ends up at Slieve League. The point where he first reached shore and found the shipwreck is nowhere near Slieve League,I'm not even sure if it's in Co.Donegal.

Secondly the lake he visits is literally 100 metres from the Bunglass Cliffs carpark which is extremely popular with tourists and locals and sees visitors every day of the year.Funnily he says that he's miles from civilisation while on the shore of the lake.Buddy, civilisation is a couple of metres behind you! There were probably a load of tourists standing there watching him decapitating the sheep. Also the space where he's camping is just up from the lake. What are the chances he spent the night in a cosy motorhome in the nearby carpark?

Thirdly he says he's going eastwards inland which would bring him to the village of Teelin yet he ends up at some woodland lake.I've never seen a lake like that anywhere near Slieve League.

Completely contrived but interesting show nonetheless!

EDIT:Just realised I never included the spoiler tag...

    Buddy,civilisation is a couple of metres behind you!There ...

I've visited that part of Ireland. I think it depends on your definition of civilization ;)

And that sheep was definitely a plant - should have been a stringy auld mountainy!

Otherwise, I thought it was mildly entertaining so long as you were able to maintain a healthy sense of disbelief. Probably went down well across the pond.

Ok perhaps not "civilisation":p but it's certainly well visited throughout the year.I doubt a day goes by when the place is empty.

I agree with the sheep being a plant...

    a) We're supposed to believe he randomly found a sheep that had JUST died so recently that no birds or animals had gotten to it.

    b) When he pulls it out you can see a red bloody spot on the sheeps skin. Looks like a bullet hole to me. Not sure how the sheep got that injury since it apparently died by sinking in the mud.

    c) Animals have some intelligence. If a sheep stepped one step into sinking mud I doubt it would just keep going until it was in the middle of the muck. It was way in, not just at the edge

He then used the sheep skin the entire episode for shelter, floatation, and food. Considering how central it was to the episode and that he was willing to eat part of the sheep, I am assuming that him and his camera guy came across it, shot it, and stuck it in the mud.

Let me know what you think?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,199 ✭✭✭Shryke

I'm waiting for him to get stuck in a properly messed up situation so he has to kill and eat the cameraman to survive. And he'd do it too. **** ya.

  • Registered Users Posts: 98 ✭✭RAUL DUKE

I've only managed to see the show a few times but will be definitly watching the ireland episode.I always find it pretty entertaining although its very ott on the drama.

I remember reading a book about him a few years ago around the same time as his "escape to the legion" programme, long before this "man vs wild" business and it said he was an extreme survival trainer and medic in the sas before he broke his back, which means the guy without any doubt, knows his sh*t!!

Speaking of him eating weird ****, did anybody catch the episode in Namibia? He cut the head off a Puff Adder and started eating it like some sort of scaly breadroll.... A hangover at the time + watching that = plenty of time praying to the ceramic god :(

He's a phony according to Ray Mears anyway. The night Mears was on Tubridy he slated him. He said Grills had been exposed in the papers for staying in hotels when he was supposed to be roughing it and that everything in his shows was a set up. Sounds about right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

Bear was indeed in a spot of bother last year when it was revealed
how much of the show was 'staged'. I posted about it at the time and
    there's some quotes/links here.

When it's now shown in Ireland/UK they have a disclaimer at the start
whilst in the US they do not. Also in the US it's "Man versus Wild" compared
to "Born Survivor", those Americans always have to the extra competitive
piece and be against something :)

Bear Grylls wasn't in the SAS proper, as far as I'm aware, he was in that part-time TA thing or something. Ray Mears was though. I'd love to see a programme where they put Ray Mears and Bear Grylls in to the jungle and see who can survive for four weeks on their own, with a personal camcorder to record their survival (Mears) and their demise (Grylls).

  • Registered Users Posts: 98 ✭✭RAUL DUKE

Ray Mears was never in the military, think he tried to join the royal marines years ago but was rejected because of a problem with his sight.Grylls served with 21 SAS which is is a reserve regiment of the sas which is connected to the TA.Not nearly as elite as the regular SAS(few are) but still extremely well trained.

    I think you'd want to be thick to believe that the whole show isnt staged but sure what of it. The mans a trained survival specialist, allegedly, and he made a series which shows people how to survive extreme conditions and circumstances. So what if hes stayin in a hotel? Ya dont expect him to show the hotel on the TV! It would take alot of the polish of the show if he said;
"Right guys, heres where id build a fire, if i actually had to stay here for the night, now im off for a warm bath in that 5 star palace over the hill there"

I dont care if hes not sleepin rough. Its a TV show. And the man eats insects for gods sake!

He is the biggest phony ever. I only had this discussion with someone the other day.
He always has the main things you need to survive on him such as flint, knife, water so he is not showing us anything we didnt already know.Anyone could survive and make a fire if they had a flint and a sly lighter in there pocket. He annoys me so much and he always seems to just make it out for when the helicopter has just landed amazing!!
No doubt he is booked into a fabulous hotel when he is in Ireland

Its an entertainment show, not a i'm the toughest adventurer on earth show. Same way Top Gear is an entertainment show and not a car review show.
Everything is setup to make it interesting to watch.
Also i don't think a phony would eat as much horrible stuff as he would.

And am I wrong in saying that he climbed mount everest not long after recovering from a serious back injury? yeah he is a phony alright!:pac::pac:

If he was recovered, what difference does it make whether it was "shortly" or 10 years after? If your recovered, your recovered.

I think with the recent events of celebs climbing mountains, it's not exactly the feat it was once considered.

He also said that he lived in Ireland until the age of 4 and always loved going back there given that it was wild and all. He lived in Donaghadee. Donaghadee isn't wild.

Fake or not, you have to give him some credit.. You can't deny that the show isn't enjoyable and exciting, and the settings are breathtaking. I'm sure Ray Mears had a little help now and again, he may be more authentic.. but without a doubt Bear Grylls is way more enjyoable
I watched the Irish episode a few times, not as great as some others, but good nonetheless :)

No mean feat at all, its a grueling climb and he didn't get short roped by a sherpa. 23 is some age to do the ascent, very very young for some of the decision making big mountain climbing needs.

I have bivouacked all over Ireland and it's not to be sneered at, the conditions can be really really bad. Don't be fooled by the temperate climate! The wind chill and the wet are killers.

    He is a showman though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭h8red

Just saw this the other night with the gf. We laughed our holes off. Anyone who says this guy is highly trained has to be wrong. When he found the overhanging rocks to shelter for the night he managed to light a fire and if he had looked at his shelter from a short distance he would have seen smoke bellowing out through the holes in it. The point being that if he was so well trained he would have made sure he wasn't going to be lying in a puddle all night by plugging the holes with peat/heather/whatever was neccessary. Any "born survivor" with a clue wouldn't sleep in a puddle for fear of hypothermia in such a "hostile environment".

    Some laugh tho.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 384 ✭✭appleidog

Just watching it now!, and so what if the show is somewhat staged the guy is still a legend. climbing mount everest, and going in a 30ft dingy with 4 other guys. across the atlantic, and bear grylls would so win in a Contest against Ray mears.

Heh, he was born in Donaghadee, co. Down into a UUP family and raised by his cricket-playing grandfather. Best upbringing for any survivoralist.

Just watched the Bear Grylls in Ireland on Youtube. Funny stuff. It's not meant to be taken seriously. Some of the locations on it are:

    1. Sliabh League cliffs, Teelin, Donegal (Opening scenes, campsite, sheep skinning scene)
    2. Glenlough (10 miles north of Sliabh League) for the rapelling scenes, some climbing scenes and the slippy rocks
    3. Glenveagh National Park, Co. Donegal for the final swim across the lake and the 'track' he finds (actually a well used walking route into the park)

I can't figure out where the shipwreck is but it's probs somewhere up in Gaoth Dobhair or somewhere up north.
