Advice for Vegas 1st timer

    Hey, I'm heading out to Vegas for about a week as I am currently traveling in the states. Can anybody please advise me on the best card rooms to go to? I plan to play mostly low limit cash games but would like to play a few day time tournaments also? Are there any good value tournaments for around the $100 buy in level or are these mostly played pretty fast? Also, what are good rooms for soft cash games at 1/2 or 2/4?
    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Tourneys at the $100 level are high rake/fast structure. Heres a listing.

    Best place to play cash - personally I think everywhere on Strip is pretty much the same low standard at $1/$2. The outright best place at any one particular moment in time is probably constantly changing.

    Agree with ArmaniJeanss here - the standard in general on the strip is dreadful as there is so much holiday money floating around the place. A quick summary of the rooms I spent most time in...

    Luxor is particularly lucrative late in the day but on the downside, it's a sh1thole.
    MGM was softer than melted marshmallow and has a tasty buffet nearby.
    The Venetian room was nice and although I didn't spend long here, the standard is low.
    I really liked the setup in Caesars - it's a lovely poker room and if you're going to play a tourney, it has sizeable fields.

    If you don't like the look of your table, just wander to another casino with more free beer. Ah, the beauty of Vegas.

    i found binions and the nugget to be handy late at night. Ballagio on the other hand....did'nt do too well :)

    Il do my best since i was a vegas first timer recently and similar to you was travelling as well.

    A lot of this hinges on where you are staying as travelling casino to casino is not as easy as you might think when it comes to walking. I would suggest staying at the Monte carlo, Excalibur, or Newyork Newyork.They are all reasonably priced and you could if you so wished manage the walk to the MGM, Caesars and the bellagio at night from any of these.

    Cash Games

    MGM - Seemed pretty soft didnt spend long there, Very noisy and in a very open area.

    Excalibur - small room never played there but a dealer at our hotel said it was where he would advise any one to play.

    Monte Carlo - I stayed here so i played here a lot. Ussualy 3 $1-2 tables going pretty soft mainly just fish with money. Really enjoyed playing here could recommend it to anyone.

    Caesars - pretty nice room 100 min 500 max buy in which i liked. Thought the standard was good but i only played here once so i couldnt say.

    Bellagio - Again i only played here once but if you are playing 2-5 do it here its the smallest game they have so it has the attract weak players. I liked the room in general.


    Tournaments - Im sure theres others that could advise you better as i did not play anything like what i wanted tournament wise.

    I know caesars are one of the best just drop in there and pick up a schedule.

    Stay away from low buy in tournys in any of the casinos and study blind levels and stacks before you enter anything.

    heres an example of tourny in my hotel 42 entry, 8 rake for 1000 chips + 1000 bonus chips for 10 that goes to dealer, its similar in most casinos you really have to pay to get a good structure, so if 100 is your limit id just play cash.

    There is a game in binions at 8 each evening i think, 125 buy in with a half decent structure plus its nice to say you played at binions i guess.

    Yea binions have a $120 freezeout at 8pm every day with 4k stack and 30 min blinds. $10,000 guaranteed every saturday and sunday. Seems like a half decent game for the buyin.

    Always good to have this kind of information floating about; hoping to make it over to Vegas to play for a week myself.

    Since there's plenty input going on here how about an idea of an ideal stack to be heading there with? I'm an Omaha player at heart and make most of my money there so expect to be running at profit quickly enough into a session.

    WOuld the 1/2 or 2/4 tables offer the best value over there?

    lee theres not a lot of omaha played there m8 u need to learn holdem again if u want to make money:D:D:D

    Venetian is best card room by far with Caesars a close 2nd. Try play Thurs through Sunday after 8pm through the night as this is when the cash games are the sofest. Make sure u bring a fleece as it gets cold with the AC in the card rooms

    Orleans is a decent hotel although a bit off the strip. They recently renovated their card room and have 2 tournaments daily. Cash games are only really good at the weekend though and midweek you'll struggle to find a 2-5 game. On the plus side the hotel has lots of restaurants, a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and arena for ice hockey, basketball and err.. karate.

    I travel to Vegas often and my list of favorite Vegas Rooms are the following:

    Bellagio
    Mirage
    Wynn
    Bally's
    Monte Carlo
    Orleans
    Sam's Town

    Personally, absolutely no reason to go downtown given so much action on the strip and the other two off-strip casinos I recommend. Downtown is just too depressing for me...unless I can stay at Golden Nugget and never leave :)

    When you are in town pick up a CardPlayer at any poker room and it lists every MTT in Vegas....There are a couple cheaper Tournys I like offered at Paris and Ballys (although somewhat quick-but small profitable fields).

    Venetian and Caesars make my others mentioned list.....but the Bellagio, Wynn offer similar games and Id rather go there (although Venetian is offering some excellent higher buy-in MTTs that I would recommend)

    Find time to do other stuff than gambing and boozing. Find nice restaurants, or pick a couple of shows like Blue Man or Spamalot to go to. Go bowling, shooting, shopping, karting, Grand Canyon. There's plenty more stuff to do apart from being a degen.
    If you do gamble and booze like a champion you will have 1 full day of not leaving the room, watching ESPN and ordering room service, which is a bit of a waste.
