Hi, not having much luck finding a company willing to insure me, so far just liberty for 4600. I'm a learner in my mid 30s with no named driver experience. Anyone recommend any insurance companies?

What kind of car is it? That's a crazy price. I got insured the year before last on a learners permit for 1600 at 26 years old. That was on a 1.2 litre. With AA. I do know insurance has gone up but surely you can get lower.

Have you got your own car? And is there someone (full licence holder) who can go on the policy as a named driver?

Did you find that through a broker? And are you ringing the companies or is that an online quote? You might have better luck ringing up and maybe trying a broker that specialises in hard to insure, imports, first time drivers etc.

Yea tried everyone. Most won't even quote. I'm trying get my dad on the policy but he's old and tho he has a full licence he's very old... but with him it's brought it diwn to 3100 for both of us. Is that more reasonable?

It's around what I was quoted for first car on provisional with dad as named driver. My car was an import so don't know if that made a difference. Just try get the test passed as soon as you can. I know one of the places offered a safe driving offer to my friend where they installed the box to monitor his speed, took the price down a bit but I was sceptical! You could look into it though.

    Have you tried firstIreland.ie

What kind of car is it? If it's anything above a 1.3 that could be bringing it up. Also, you can put anyone with a full license on the insurance. Even try a friend.

I did it with my mother on it - she is 70.
I went third party and got it down from 4k to 1500 with a few extras like breakdown assistance and windscreen cover. I'll go fully comp when I pass and work up a no claims bonus! This is with Liberty.

    I'm 35, female and was insuring a 2008 Micra

So basically you're going for a car that Liberty recently recommended for low insurance rates in everything but name and still got an extortionate quote from them!

She posted later to say female. But it shouldn't matter now. Their premiums were increased to match male premiums weren't they?

In theory I suppose they were but the cheapest quote I've ever gotten has been from its4women.ie so I think there still is some discount to be had out there.

Also, when looking for a quote for a friend it was 200 cheaper when I put her partner in as a named driver so that might help?

Its a first time driver, there is no cheap option.

    Op, have you tried Boxymo?

They seem to be consistently cheaper for first time drivers.

This was back in July 2016. I called about 6 places and was the best I could get.
Just have to suck it up for a year unfortunately.
Don't quite understand your accusatory tone though?

I was 35 insuring a Jazz as a first time driver and it cost me €800 or so with First Ireland. That was 3 years ago though.

I'm 35 male, not using the vehicle for work. Thanks for your suggestions, been shopping around and 2700 is best I can get. Haven't bought it yet but I bought an 07 1.4 focus car just today as insurance on it was considerably cheaper than an older car, even compared to an 06 model. Even smaller engine sizes didn't make much difference. I learned from ringing pretty much everyone that it makes much more sense to invest more in car and save on insurance rather than the other way around. Works in my situation anyway, different obviously if your on a parents or partners car.
